  • This tutorial shows the recent method to use the commands Trim and Extend in Autocad 2021.
    There is a controversy about this topic.
    However it's possible to switch to the method used by default up to Autocad 2020.
    Enter the system variable: TRIMEXTENDMODE
    TRIMEXTENDMODE = 0 Old method
    TRIMEXTENDMODE = 1 New method
    Get the example file here:

    This tutorial shows the recent method to use the commands Trim and Extend.
    If you have any questions or comments please feel free to post :).

    I hate the new trim and extend...................I always end up clicking twice or a line gets caught up in the command and screws it up.

      Hi Mark. I think that's because we are used to a way and then they changed a bit the things.
      However you can choose "cutting edges" to make it work as we were used to it.

      i m on the same boat, i hate it with a passion it makes zero sense. Fortunatly you can go back to the previous mode using TRIMEXTENDMODE = 0 -> Old method
      thx god

    I believe the methods you showed could be accomplished with the older trim/extend commands by changing the edgemode variable

    It's actually the older trim and extend. I like it much better than the 2020 version

      Hi Zook Life. Thanks for your reply, and I understand you and more people prefer the older version. I think most of time people trim between two intersections, so probably that's why they changed. Also, I find it more intuitive for beginners.

    Also, you can use the ALL command when you select either trim or extend, instead of picking a cutting line...

      Ah, yes, that's also an option! Thanks for the comment Panayot

    Well you should have told, that in normal (not new method) you could just hit enter, space or right mouse button to get the same result as new one. And I hate that they made it default, on every new pc i am surprised that it doesnt work as i want it to work...

    Thanks. But you know this new method is really hard for me especially if you used it for the past ten years. Still, i guess i need to adapt to some changes.

    • @CADinblack
      @CADinblack  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. If you are used to the old method, it may be hard to stick to the new one. I recommend you practice it a lot until it is normal for you.

    Change the system variable TRIMEXTENDMODE to 0

      Thanks a lot for the tip Adolfo. So each user can decide the method they want.
      TRIMEXTENDMODE = 0 -> Old method
      TRIMEXTENDMODE = 1 -> New method
      Personally I got used to the new method as most of the time is faster for me.

      you cant imagine how much you helped me, i was in a confused state of anger and despair, thank you so much. The new mode makes zero sense to me, plus edgemode is not working anymore, that s terrible

    I think the issue is that they made it like this by default. Which sucks by the way, you lose control. That's what they all want. The dumbification of the world.

      Hello Hakan. Trim and Extend exist probably from the first version of Autocad back in 1982. What I explained in this video is that the way they work changed in 2021.

    This is nothing new. It's been around for a while. If you're going to teach, you should know the subject matter.

      Hello Vinnie. Thanks for your comment. In this video I just explained that Autocad changed the steps that we should take to use the commands. If we open Autocad 2020, we can see those steps were different. However, what we can do with the commands, it's the same.
      Also, I said it was new in Autocad 2021, even it was released more than one year ago.

      @@CADinblack I appreciate your quick response to my comment. I wasn't clear in my comment, what I meant was the option to not pick trim or extension edge lines has been in place for quite a few years now. I believe since 2016. That's why I was surprised by your video. I was expecting something new from Autodesk. Keep up the good work.
