A friend recently posted on FB that her rice cooker recently went kaput. I knew her family shops at a local thrift store ( not everyone appreciates used items). This past week I found a nearly new in the box rice cooker at the thrift shop for only $4 on half price day and bought it for her. She was thrilled!
I started this journey in July, and I have payed off small depts on about 3000€ (VISA etc) and in December I will habe build up my emergency fund up till 2000€ 🙌 from not saving almost anything, I now save 500€/month
Deep freezer at my parents house broke and they intended to repair it. But until they do, they needed to do something with the food that was in it. My mum called few friends to ask them if they could store some of her food. And one friend told her she has a deep freezer which she is not using. It is even plugged out. And offer to gift it to my mum. Now, after they repaired the broken one, they have 2 freezers. The gifted one is very fancy. Sometimes, just talking to people provides solutions.
Hope quote: "You are only responsible for giving a gracious response. You are not responsible for how they receive or react to your response." That is so true. Thank you.
The 'ask before buy' is exactly what I did/I'm doing this Christmas. My daughter purchased a home this past April and I recently asked her is there anything in particular that she didn't get that she would like. And she mentioned a toaster oven. So I mentioned it to my mom after I had priced some. My mom said she had a brand new one, the kind that's big enough to fit a small chicken if possible, with the broiler and all other types of odds and ends on it and she said she'd only used it once. It was still in the styrofoam packaging inside the Box! Mom's had it for 12 years. I plugged it in, it heats up beautifully, I unplugged it let it cool down put it back in the wrap and put it back in the styrofoam, sealed up the box and wrapped it. Voila! $35+ saved!😊
Years ago, our high mileage minivan up and died. We were committed to paying cash for our next vehicle, but didn't have much put back yet. My husband and I carpooled for about 6 months - which involved some sacrifices (one of us leaving home earlier than necessary and one of us waiting to be picked up). It wasn't that bad! We saved - not only the savings we were already setting aside, but on gas and car insurance as well. My husband called a mechanic friend when we had some money saved to ask him what we should be looking for in a used vehicle. It turns out his mother-in-law had recently stopped driving and she was willing to sell her sedan with only 35,000 miles on it for a great price. It was a great car for us! I'm so glad we made a few sacrifices for what ended up being a huge blessing.
The washing machine broke and I bought a $2 bucket from the dollar store. And now we just wash and then silk everything for a few hours and then we just dry things on the line or on the clothes horse as normal. Works great
Hope & Larry, all I can say is THANK GOD I DON'T WORK IN AN OFFICE ANYMORE!!! The pressure to hand over cash to buy the boss a gift and/or participate in "Secret Santa" or gift exchanges was beyond reasonable. I've been called names like "grinch" and "party pooper" when I politely declined to participate. I'd much rather make a charitable donation to the animal shelter or to hungry children than buy useless stuff for coworkers that I don't even care for. I remember in 2008 we were on the verge of losing our home when a teacher that I worked with just wouldn't take "NO" for an answer and insisted that I participate in "Secret Santa." I was a part-time employee, in the process of having a nervous breakdown due to finances, and I ended up having to go out and buy gifts for a gym teacher that never even acknowledged or thanked me for the gifts. I still feel traumatized by that memory. I just don't understand why people in the workplace can't just do holidays with their families and just keep the workplace neutral.
Dryer broke 5 years ago. I never had it repaired. I wash and hang dry. When my washer goes, I’m hand washing and hang fry. I unplug my electric stove and if I have to cook, I plug it in. My bills are surprisingly low! I unplug just about everything
1. Food Banks just enjoy meeting people in line 2. Holiday Parades 3. Gardening 4. Feeding my wild critters 5. Listening & watching TH-cam 6. Texting, Emailing & talking to friends 7. I think my health club has free dance classes as well as two swimming pools, both at 98 degrees all year long 8.Our local libraries have passes for area opportunities & I think one is the botanical gardens 9. I think some area museums are cheap or free 10. Cemeteries to visit historic grave sites, some people collect charcoal etchings with brown paper off grave stones.
I been watching older videos from 4 or 5 yrs. Y'all actually look younger today... Y'all are so smart.. i have only started saving lately. I have been in debt so long. And have used my credit card just to survive.. yall make so much sense
Something to add ... you need to really be looking at the numbers as Hope said, but be honest about those numbers. Recently did an audit of what I was actually spending on groceries versus what I thought I had been spending. Going over things for next year as you all suggested in one of the recent videos in the four part series you did. Well let's just say things were not what I thought. Adjustments are already being made! We live debt free outside of our mortgage and we are working on it, and our goal is five years (we had an eight year plan, three down so far so on track). But got hit with a 550.00 a year increase with our homeowners insurance. So I was looking for that 45.00 a month we will need to make up that extra money going out. Thanks for the great advice. (Sorry so long but felt it was important to share).
You are so right! Our car insurance went up 35%. We are looking for additional money in the budget, too. I think we're going to do our "10% Challenge" this week to try to reduce expenses - and we'll do a video showing how to do it. Hopefully that will be helpful to you, too.
I chuckled when you talked about class reunions. My class hit 50 years a few years back. This summer, as we all had kit a milestone birthday, we had a luau! A lot of laughter, good conversation, and games. I am happy to announce that I am still cornhole champion of my class!!
My boyfriend and I just started intermittent fasting about 8 weeks ago and we have cut our grocery bill back by over 75%. It is amazing how much food we were buying that we didn't eat- and how much food we were eating that we didn't need. We now eat between noon and four- and we save a TON of money on food. We started out with an 8 hour eating window and shortened it to 4 hours, and we find we are very satisfied with one big meal and one snack. I'm buying higher quality food, and still saving more money than you would believe.
When my coffee maker died, I discovered that I could still make perfectly good coffee by simply boiling water and pouring it over the fresh grounds in the top of the maker. I still had the filters, so they didn't go to waste. It worked really well to do that until I could get a new coffee maker.
So true about asking friends about your needs. A few weeks ago I went to my church’s yard sale looking for a sofa as my last one had no life left. Told some ladies and one offered her sofa for free. The next day she and her husband delivered it to my house. The thank you note is in the mail!
After a boss of mine snubbed me for giving her a can of popcorn one year, I said forget it. Didn't have to do it and it was rudely accepted. A child standing nearby said, "She acted like she didn't even want it." She didn't. I decided ri😊ght there that our family is where our money is going for gifts.
I wish y’all were on PBS or something for everyone. You both would fit so well, you remind me of Mr. Rogers but if it was finance/frugality. My family is going through a lot and these videos are helping me prepare for possible harder time should it happen! God bless you both 💖🙏
My father use to have a saying, if it is not broke, do not fix it. I do not replace anything unless you can not fix it. Like the hot water heater I had to replace a couple of yrs ago. The date on it 1985.
Community is so important. Last week my sisters got me to call my internet provider to ask for a better price by first doing it themselves. I already had the best price (11% under the current market value) which made me happy. Could’ve taken some more but ok 🤑😉 we can apparently not live without Netflix either, I did end our subscription but my husband restarted it again the last day 😂 When my kids were small I researched what was free to do in our area (or really cheap) and then we did that, almost always with a picnic basket (which is great with kids, you pack stuff you know they like). We also had yearly passes for the zoo some years and other ”parks” and I always made sure we went there enough times that it would be cheaper than the separate tickets.
Living alone is a challenge to being frugal. No buying in bulk etc but I cook and freeze meals for another day. Saves money on buying food out or ordering food out. Also you control how you use things, save on electricity, water and gas heat
I found your videos in August, and I'm halfway through paying off my credit card debt. I'm really looking forward to clearing it completely. Thanks, guys!
I am in a new department at work, there was someone who had just gotten an baby and they always collect money for a gift. They were asking 20 euros (around 21 dollars) per person! I don't know about other people but I find that extreme. Mind you, I have not seen this coworker and have not worked with her so I kindly but firmly declined. (For the looks on other people's faces I guess I'm the first one). But there are again 3 more people pregnant, if I have to give every single one of them 20 euros work will start costing me money instead of earning it!
That was smart to think about whether you were willing to repeat that 20 euros for every co-worker who is expecting. Certainly if you have worked with any of the currently pregnant women, it would be perfectly appropriate to quietly give them a gift personally. But, you should not be expected to give a gift to everyone.
Funny just watched frugal queen in France on one of her older videos suggesting this idea on replacing appliances. And usually someone does have what we need!
I haven’t seen one person from my high school class since I graduated in 1984. If I didn’t keep in touch with these people for 35+ years, why would I go see them NOW?
the freezer on our old fridge stopped working and all we needed was a replacement fan to fix it. It was still a nice fridge that lasted for many more years. We replaced it with a scratch and dent a few years ago that was a great deal and most people cannot see the blemish unless we point it out.
I love the joyful reality you both bring to your videos. You are considered my frugal friends as my husband is not onboard with me entirely on this journey. That's okay. I'll do me ❤ I'll achieve my goals . Love your videos & your positive energy.
$500/month on eating out is the US average! Wow. I don't know if it is just the difference between Canada and the US, or if it's just me...... but I can't even remember the last time I went out to eat! I am a good cook, I love to cook, and I am more concerned with healthy food, so I eat at home. The closest thing I have to eating out is meeting a friend for coffee at McDonald's! And even that is only in the winter. The rest of the year, we meet in the park and bring our own coffee from home!
“As of now, Canadians allocate 43% of their food budget to food services, up from 37% in 2019, the year before the pandemic These data indicate a gradual shift towards a market increasingly oriented towards food services in Canada, a surprising development given the predominantly negative media coverage, including reports of tipping fatigue. However, the situation in Canada still markedly differs from that in the United States, where nearly 54% of the food budget is spent in restaurants, though Canada is slowly closing that gap.” The above was written in September 2024 (so recent) by Sylvain Charlebois. His articles are published in French and English in many newspapers and journals in Canada and the USA. Dr. Sylvain Charlebois is Senior Director of the Agri-Foods Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University in Halifax. Also at Dalhousie, he is Professor in food distribution and policy in the Faculty of Agriculture.
I think it probably the same or possibly higher (due to usually higher cost here) in Canada. We cut back a lot during C and while we do go sometimes it is more for special occasions or with friends instead of ‘not feeling like cooking’ We are generally good cooks, just had gotten lazy and are thankful for the reset in our mindset
Train Watching, we just had the WW2 Big Boy, the largest Engine visit Fort Worth in its National visitations. They cost a little, but I want to see some miniature train shows. Missed one in my hometown at Clark Gardens, I also want to go to a Indian Pow Wow, never been. In Fort Worth, not free unless you get passes, great rodeos here & nearby. 1962 my kindergarten class we all dressed as Hobos & took a train ride, I watched for open box car doors passing by for tramps and waved since that time.
The keyboard on my husband’s laptop went out after the last Microsoft update. The screen and processing works fine. I keep a blue tooth keyboard just for this reason. I got it set up and it works just fine. He’s not too happy about it, but I’m not willing to replace it since everything else works perfectly.
Just made an appointment for December the 10th for a possible health care insurance change. Most everyone else has till the 7th, I have till first of year to change so they were glad to see me after the 7th. Did a whole lot of research with this change up.
I recently read a comment made by Steve Jobs on an occasion; that was that he was not interested in being the richest person in the cemetery. Good thought. ❤
I was thinking the same thing!! Larry, you hair cut looks really nice! Hope, your hair is always just gorgeous!! You guys are such a joy to learn from!! Thank you!!
Parks are great, walking through one I found a Thunder Egg, something like a geode, one out of thirty stones have a beautiful inside. Great to observe wildlife & nature, maybe feed the critters. Trinity River for decades, people take day old bread for kids to feed the ducks, some kids have grown up and are taking their kids now to feed ducks.
We started in the Covid lockdown with getting together for Sunday lunch with four other friends. Then the person who started this tradition started inviting others to participate (we now have 11 people in the group). The problem is it has grown to include Christmas, birthdays and Mother’s Day. It’s getting just too expensive. And four of the people are retired. Trying to find a diplomatic way to back off from attending all these things without seeming like a Scrooge.
I really want to stop buying my older kids (21 and18) as well as mum in laws ect gifts and Christmas I struggle with what to say so I just get Christmas anxiety up till Christmas Eve
How about suggesting a day out together, as a joint gift? Or a special meal together, as 'none of us really want things from others anyway' Or I'm planning a really special meal/ holiday/ purchase for next year so I'm reducing over spending this year. I'm suggesting we do a secret sa t gift this year.
I CANNOT GO TO MORE THAN ONE STODE AT A TIMEA 50 DOLLAR CCAB RIDE I USUALLY GO TO WALMART BECAUSE I HATE IT THERE BUT THE VARIETY AND PRICES ARE BETTER FOR ME
2009was my debt free date 2018Wife wanted to piss it all away. So she stole it all but some equity I got to keep and I restarted my life debt free. Bought a house $12K was great until 9/11/24 🌀 Francine got my power, it's been 2 months living in my car for the AC. Cool weather otw. I can live winter no power. I'll need power eventually. If I go solar it'll be fans bc running ac on solar is expensive it's a day time thing.
@GEAUXFRUGAL - Debt free but have to build up the emergency accounts. My husband was a spender, so I went to work, paid off the mortgage and set up college accounts for the kids. Was hard, but I thought we were basically on the same page. He died very unexpectedly and after the funeral (which I had also saved for) I found that he had spent on crap , gutted the kids college accounts, changed the passwords and was working on an inheritance I had. I am sure he thought he could put it back before I found out. (He had a good income). Sounds harsh, but if I had known, he would be in a shoebox in a drawer and very likely my ex. Trusting someone can be very expensive. I'm not happy he's dead, but I'm glad I'm no longer having to deal with the financial chaos he caused.
I am retired and I have debt because I had to put a new roof on my house and then I got sick and went in the hospital. and now I’m in more debt and I’m trying to pay off a $1700 hospital bill plus the loan I have the debt on for the roof. I only make $1900 a month so I only pay my rent my Power and pay my cell phone and Internet and I have to buy a little bit of food. I am paying my hospital bill $700 a month to get it paid off that leaves me with about $10 at the end of every month if that I am thinking about turning off my Internet and cell phone and go into a home phone because my phone never rings. My family doesn’t have anything to do with me because I live in a mobile home and they are all millionaires and I’m trailer park trash, but I’m not because all my house is paid for and I only have a little bit of deck compared to all their so do you think it would be a wise decision for me to turn off my Internet and my cell phone and do without those two things and put that money towards that debt.? that is the only two things I can give up to get ahead because I have to have Power. I have to have money for rent lot rent and I have to have a little bit of money to eat on which I do not cook anymore so I don’t eat much so should I get rid of those two bills till I get my debt paid off? I’m 67 years old and I live alone and I have no one I can call on to help not even a neighbor.
I'm $5 a day for coffee but I quit drinking alcohol and I have plenty money. Hurricane got power but I had to kill at&t internet service. $60+ a month savings also got rid of the music service Xm was $5 monthly well I thought what an unfortunate time for them to double the bill to ten dollars. I called and cancelled. The main reason I got it was raw comedy. It's been so woke I couldn't stand most of the content. Comedian is not going to sway my vote so please don't try.
@GEAUXFRUGAL You must live in Texas Gulf Coast. Beryl took our internet and phone service for weeks. Spent last summer w/o air conditioning because central unit went out. Bought a new system in July of this year because I didn't want to charge it and decided I'd tough it out. Mr. Freon is my best friend. Now I am saving for a new (used) car. Meanwhile, I tell myself that I am CHOOSING to walk and that I am demonstrating how tough I am. I think the neighbors refer to me as the crazy lady.

I am a good cook, I love to cook, and I am more concerned with healthy food, so I eat at home. The closest thing I have to eating out is meeting a friend for coffee at McDonald's! And even that is only in the winter. The rest of the year, we meet in the park and bring our own coffee from home!
“As of now, Canadians allocate 43% of their food budget to food services, up from 37% in 2019, the year before the pandemic
These data indicate a gradual shift towards a market increasingly oriented towards food services in Canada, a surprising development given the predominantly negative media coverage, including reports of tipping fatigue. However, the situation in Canada still markedly differs from that in the United States, where nearly 54% of the food budget is spent in restaurants, though Canada is slowly closing that gap.”
The above was written in September 2024 (so recent) by Sylvain Charlebois.
Thanks for all your advise you guys have helped me tremendously ❤❤❤😊
I recently read a comment made by Steve Jobs on an occasion; that was that he was not interested in being the richest person in the cemetery. Good thought. ❤

Really enjoyed this video Love the quote!
I sent for your ebook. Thank you so much.
Great advice! Hope, I love your top! So pretty

Another great video! And I love the puns. ;)
78% paycheck to paycheck omg 😟 that's a hard life.

Good morning from Germany 🙂
Yep, fomo! This is an awesome video! So much great information! You guys rock!

I really want to stop buying my older kids (21 and18) as well as mum in laws ect gifts and Christmas I struggle with what to say so I just get Christmas anxiety up till Christmas Eve
How about suggesting a day out together, as a joint gift?
Or a special meal together, as 'none of us really want things from others anyway'
Or I'm planning a really special meal/ holiday/ purchase for next year so I'm reducing over spending this year.
Have a movie thon if you have Netflix free for 30 days and watch all the good ones (good for surgeries too) then cancel!

Hello
I don't watch any tv anymore. I have the satellite dish free it acted up and I just dropped it just not worth the effort to set it all out.
I got rid of the tv completely over a year ago. I have never missed it. I have one music streaming service which I enjoy every day. That's it!
Debt free for 22 years now
FOMO, I always called it Full of Bullmo.
Hope, I like your hair growing longer……frames your face very well
I'm $5 a day for coffee but I quit drinking alcohol and I have plenty money.
❤
Fomo is real!!!
Yep...fomo...idk ..idc...(I don't care)... inid (I'm not in debt😂😂😂
Yep I know what FOMO. Is
