UMO just sounds like how my heart would make music if it actually had a brain. I know that sounds cheesy, but it's the best way I can describe the feeling they give me. They seem to hit me at a weird emotional middle ground, between sorrow and fun. It's even eerier that he references Uchiko in Austin. It was one of my favorite date spots after I went through a messy divorce. Heavy, I know.
Great review, Although I will disagree that it's an overly studio sound. In fact you might imagine this from hearing it, but listening to their live set on KEXP, you can actually see that it is their actual sound. I appreciated the album more when I saw that.
I'm feelin it.. I dig the production. The songwriting is spot on. A few things stand out to me about this record, namely the instrumentation and the production. It just has a distinct flavor you know? Lot of personality. Feelin it.
I love UMO - they have become one of my favorite new bands. I own everything they have ever put out & I am so excited to go see them in concert this July---it's going to be great, can't wait!!!
I love the song 'necessary evil', when I was listening to it, I thought it was a band from the 70's, absolutely great sequence of harmony and feel. Great band!
Yet another reason why I make sure I watch everything Anthony puts out. I had never heard of these guys before and just listened to their album (like 5 times already) thanks to this review and I really like it! Now I am trying to find more music from this genre, so if anyone has some cool suggestions please let me know haha :]
I really enjoyed this album. The lo-fi flavor goes so well with the bumping beats on some of these tracks, and the song writing is a big leap forward from their previous work. Good stuff.
"If we were just strangers then we would fall in love again..abandon extreme wealth and casual cruelty." For some reason I keep hearing D'angelo singing this line. I know I was not the only one hearing the Neo Soul influence on this album! Stevie Wonder and Prince were the love parents for "Ur Life One Night". Spot on!
Hey Fantano. Did you realise UMO is just one guy? Ruban Neilson. Brings the band on tour. I was surprised you didn't mention the horns on this record. Adds a nice touch.
Ayyyyyyyyyye, is the gay kid who is in love with sellthony outtano! How you doing man? Haven't seen you in the comment section for a long time. How would you rate his moustache? I personally give it a cal/10. And you?

Idk I happen to think Currents a more well-rounded album. But both are great and have different vibes. With Currents, Kevin Parker went all-out futuristic, it sounds like album from outer space whereas Multi-Love embraces more elements of psych-rock from the past. So one is calling back to psych routes a bit more while the other is completely abandoning them for an entirely new sound.
I saw UMO in 2011 when they opened for Weezer, I they had a really fantastic performance. They have that type of nostalgic retro-y sound to them that I really enjoy, I love the chill feel of their music. And I love love love the style their vocalist brings.
Just did the dishes and listened to this album and I liked it a lot especially the track Extreme Wealth and Casual Cruelty. Basically it's UMO II with added disco and Stevie Wonder touches. Some Beatles too. I love the production and I think the main guy has a great song writing style and really cool guitar work. If there were any minuses I might say the overall neat grooviness leaves things sounding maybe a bit inconsequential but it was only a first listen. How does anyone sell any music when everything's on TH-cam?
Nice review but I wish you would review the other album visible in this video aka Mingus Ah Um or maybe Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. Basically anything by Charles Mingus.
Yeah the last track is the one I hate. The entire album is just straight up singles, the filler tracks are singles to my ears.. insane musicianship and creativity with this album. perfect mix between soul and psych music. 10/10
Agree with Dylan. The outro which feels like it could go on forever, and does go on a surprisingly long time, but also somehow doesn't outstay it's welcome and helps ease you back into the real world gently... This album made me tune my guitar down half a step lol
Had to laugh about the "Tame Impala's little brother" comment. I think UMO blows them out of the water. I do like Tame Impala to an extent but for some reason I don't see why everyone thinks that they are so great.
Opaque Visions Tame Impala is all done by one guy, so I think that helps. But both groups are solid. This album was like Tame Impala meets Modest Mouse for me
+Jordan O (Ponydigger9) pretty sure UMO is all done by Ruban Nielson too. The whole "one person rock album" trend seems to be getting more and more popular with artists like tame impala, umo, Mac Demarco, etc.
I loved it. The production is on point and way better then the previous two records. I think the mix of funk and new wave fits them perfectly. Very solid album.
Ok so I'm new on Anthony's channel, can someone please explain to me what's the deal the Cutchena persona who is always stuck in a frame (who was a cat in this video). I'm honestly lost and out of the loop on this one.
Just gonna let you know right now Mr. theneedledrop. I love the goshdarn heck out of Universal Themes and I don't give a frick what score you give it. It is a 10/10 in my heart.
It wouldve been nice for you to make note of the fact that Ruban Nielson is to UMO just as Kevin Parker is to TI or Chaz Bundick is to TYM... One man production crew to record and a group of friends coming together to flush the songs out live.
Love UMO, I liked the previous album a bit better bc it had more of the low fi sound that I dig of their's. Still it's an album worth a week on repeat. Good stuffs.
I have a few releases from this year I would like to hear your opinion on: Leprous - The Congregation Mew - +- Snarky Puppy & Metropole Orkest - SYLVA Gavin Harrison - Cheating the Polygraph And also a few Dream Theater reviews wouldn't hurt. Also hoping for a review of the new Tame Impala album when it gets out!
Gotta agree with you on the ending to Stage Or Screen. Though the song is actually one of my favorites! I kind of imagine Like Acid Rain and Stage Or Screen as a duo. Really catchy and sticky, yet a couple of the shortest tracks.
Ive often enjoyed Ruben's acoustic acoustic versions of songs over the album's recorded versions... and speaking of low -fi, he even plays a pretty cheap Yamaha acoustic guitar, and ironically makes it sound great lol
I'm sorry, but UMO & UMO II were so damn amazing that it seems like everything else they do can just never match the raw intensity and outside the box creativity of those first albums. They were even way more powerful of a live band during that 2011 to 2013 period. From this album on they became too polished and much more commercial-like. I saw them many times during that early 2011 to 2013 period and they blew me away! The last time I saw them live was on this album's tour around 2015 I think, and I was quite disappointed in the show compared to how incredible they were live early on.
still didn't research enough to see that it's one dude, from new zealand relocated to portland? the live band doesn't really record on the records. idk, i think this stuff is important to know before going into an album. helps you respect an aesthetic a little more, dissolves biases etc
You should do a track review of Ghost's new single 'Cirice', you've reviewed Ghost's stuff before and I'd love to know what you think about their newest track!
You buried Cal in the Pet Semetary, didn't you? Well, DUH - of course he came back as a haunted cat. It's the friggin Pet Semetary, what did you expect?
I don't think I'm showing you anything new. But you really should review "Riddles are Abound Tonight" By Sausage. I would love to hear what you think about it.

"Between sorrow and fun..." great way to describe it. Agreed.
Alexander Chidester Cheesy? Maybe. But true! Well said.
Alexander Chidester That's awesome, I feel that way too.
I feel like you have a beautiful brain. Id be friends with you
Its less that it sounds cheesy and more that it makes no sense
"Puzzles" is a really genius song. This album takes a few listens, but it is very good.
Cal is coming back.
theneedledrop Don't play with my emotions.
EpickaNESS it's true.
Fantano we want a date as to when this amazingness will happen

Go for bands like Ariel Pink and Connan Mockasin. Both have good lo-fi psych sounds
I really enjoyed this album. The lo-fi flavor goes so well with the bumping beats on some of these tracks, and the song writing is a big leap forward from their previous work. Good stuff.

This one is more consistent than "Currents" but best tracks from "Currents" edge out the best tracks from "Multi-Love". Both solid neo-psych records.
Funny coincidence, right before I saw your comment I was about to type the exact same thing
Idk I happen to think Currents a more well-rounded album. But both are great and have different vibes. Cameron Lillyman he's dead, but coming back.

Dude you rock! So articulate and knowledgeable. Thanks for doing these ! Only suggestion - maybe some analysis of lyrics! Hugs from Canada.
multi-love is currents on acid

Agree with Dylan. The outro which feels like it could go on forever, and does go on a surprisingly long time, but also somehow doesn't outstay it's welcome and helps ease you back into the real world gently...

Luke Cherchenko no, UMO has four members.
@@andeggbreaks sorry im late but ruben nielson creates most/all of the music his band just tour. similar to kevin parker
I can’t agree more. To me Tame Impala never competes UMO as Ruban is much more capable of bringing creativity and crucial development into the era.
i recommend givin the new Ghost track a listen and maybe track review. I really, really enjoyed it, best metal track ive heard in a while.

Review Shahmen - All In The Circle and/or Thee Oh Sees - Mutilator Defeated At Last
Tom Servo In favor of Shahmen's review. Thought they quit but was pleasantly surprised by this release.
I don't think he's reviewing the new TOS album :(
I loved it. The production is on point and way better then the previous two records. I think the mix of funk and new wave fits them perfectly. Very solid album.
Umo did a great job here, especially in production, and Multi -Love is my song of the year .

John Smith doubt he'll say anything more positive than the resident advisor panning.

thanks for reviewing it. glad you liked it.
have yet to get into this group and I love Godspeed, Explosions in the Sky, Tarentel, and Sigur Ros. Is this a good place to start with this band?
UMO's pretty far off from post-rock, they're psychedelic with a funk twist
I don't see what those band have in common with this band?
David Rothschild I think II would be a better start for you
David Rothschild if you have to ask such a question you're better off not listening to them
David Rothschild Go in chronological order like you would with any band
Fucking great album, can't stop listening to it.
👍
Anthony, how come when an album gets an 8/10, it's always only a light 8? Do you have a problem with decent to strong 8s?
Hey it's my cousin Cat Chuchesta! You shtill owe me seven bucks for getting doze Fancy Feast stains out of your sweater at da dry cleaners!
Ruben is for sure my favourite NZ artist, possibly one of our best ever
Show me your hifi setup. I'm curious.

I agree with this review. This album sounds good as shit. This brings them out of the hipster band category
I suggest you Delta Sleep, a math-rock band really valid. Debut album out 15th june, maybe you can review it.
They are from New Zealand too

Head over to Luke James. He's done an awesome review already.
Album is insane amazing! Sounds like it headed down the same feel as Toro Y Moi's new album but kicked up the funk-fi to 11.
I don't think I'm showing you anything new. But you really should review "Riddles are Abound Tonight" By Sausage. I would love to hear what you think about it.
Could someone tell me what album is behind Anthony ?
Mateusz Białek Charles Mingus - Ah Um
A great starting point for jazz
Diatonic5th Thanks a lot, jazzydude ! :)
PJ Yes it is!
Although, I would vote "The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady" as Mingus's best album.
Diatonic5th Agreed &VERY different to Ah Um, but they're both great.
