Perenties are such a kind of beautiful animals, their stare always resemble some kinds of sadness and wisdom. Also they are sleek and elegant, unlike komodos and water monitors which look bulky and clumsy.
Wang Ruoxu they are only slow and clumsy when they are kept in enclosures that are to small and not given enough exercise. Unlike other reptiles monitor lizards require plenty of exercise in order to maintain healthy body proportions, fitness and mobility, also a lot of captive monitors are also way over fed! Just watch a video of a Komodo running down a deer and you will see just how quick a wild Komodo can sprint over a short distance! Having said this you are correct perenties do have a look of sleekness and athletism that is unmatched by other large monitors.
One of my oldest memories (I was four years old at the time) is of a Perentie. I was playing in the dirt when a Perentie walked past it was so close I could touch it. me and my family live in remote Australia.
monitors sure are clever enough, to be confident! that wild lizard didnt care much about a human coming close, and good ol mr. attenborough is respectfull enough, not to bug it. =)
+Cuda FX Although he is close, it's a clever camera angle that makes him look far closer than he actually is. If he was within 2 meters of him (as it appears in the video) the monitor would most likely of whipped him with his tail.

They are real and they are prominent through out the interior, north and north west of western australia, commonly known as Race Horse Goanna or Bungarra to the Wongatha people of the South West Desert Region, they are closely related to the Komodo Dragon in Indonesia, stunning creatures to watch, but u dont want to be chased by one, they are fast

I saw one in front of my house and I almost shit my pants, didn’t know wtf it was. I just wanted to go to woollies to buy ice cream and boom it was there.
KAMIKAZE 619 theres a monitor lizard documentary you can find on youtube if you are interested, they talk about their intelligence throughout, the perentie was recorded to be smart enough to memorize on pinpoint their hunting territory, they can remember the best trails and the best runways as well, truly intelligent!
@Jason Berryman if not smarter than dogs, and believe it or not, more trainable (depending on the monitor) than dogs because they're more food motivated. You can teach a juvie monitor a neat trick in a few minutes with just food (including hand and vocal commands which could take a few days to a week), whilst a puppy ranging from 5 weeks, to 6 months old can take a long time to train. I know from experiences and watching some vids, its fascinating.
I remember around 2006 driving from Karratha to Coral Bay in Western Australia, literally saw over 100 dead Perenties on the road and most were 2 meters
Does anyone know how this animal came to be named the perentie? It doesn't seem to be a native name. I've googled around with no leads, but I learned that it was not scientifically confirmed until recently that it is slightly venomous.
13 years too late, however, the name “Perentie” has its origins in the Arrernte language, spoken by the Arrernte people of Central Australia. In their language, the term "perente" refers to this impressive monitor lizard. The Arrernte people have a deep connection to the land and its wildlife and their language reflects this intimate relationship with the natural world. So, the name “Perentie” is a testament to the cultural heritage and indigenous knowledge of the Arrernte people, who have shared their wisdom about this remarkable reptile for generations.
@armytaskforce11x Monitor lizards are group of closely related lizards it's not just one specie. Komodo dragons and the extinct Megalania belong to this Monitor lizard group.
I already said you can't find them outside Australia, so I'm aware of that. I have actually looked into obtaining a perentie monitor, and as you said, they just aren't available. A few zoos have them, and that's it.
I get what you mean. I wish I had a few in my property if I lived in Australia to get red if and venomous snakes. But than again 8 foot perenties would be pretty scary to see about as well. But they are gorgeous with what can only be aborigine artwork-patterned skin
Well, it's been shown in experiments that monitor lizards can understand the concept of counting objects, and the idea of less or more. In the wild, they will actually patrol roadsides in search of roadkill, take advantage of disasters like grass fires to prey on fleeing/injured animals, and use strategy when hunting-such as climbing a fruiting tree and waiting for parrots or other birds to come. They're probably just a little less intelligent than rats, in my opinion.
I was taking a leak once when I was younger turned around after I was done and one of these bad hombres was chillin right next to me peering into my god damn soul I never ran so fast in my life the thing was huge was definitely longer than me Beautiful beast but.
I once woke up while out on a solo camping trip and found a dead log had collapsed my tent and was on top of me - in those days I was a VERY heavy sleeper and could sleep through a bomb. I vaguely shifted under the weight, only to notice the 'log' moving - I woke up like a shot and bolted to the other side of my tent! Thinking someone was screwing with me I grabbed my hunting knife and jumped out, ready to take on all comers, and came face to face with a huge goanna that had decided to lie on top of me for my body heat! It took off like a bat out of hell, which was just as well, as it was huge! I stayed in that spot for a couple of days due to rain, and every morning I'd wake up, look out through the mesh of my tent, and there would be the goanna, looking in at me. :) As for taking a piss, I once did the same all over a bush, and half way through a brown snake snuck out from where I'd been pissing all over it, and made its was past my right leg - I just froze until it had gone past me.

While Australia has Dinosaurs, the Perentie ain't one of them. Now the Cassowary on the other hand is a Dinosaur. It also looks like it's distant cousin the Oviraptor with it's crest and has Velociraptor-like claws on it's feet.
I seen the king lizard . He could pop head in car window I live here in Aus . I'm not kidding n I been searching for any ANY info I can't find none he didn't look like this
But Komodo dragons did evolve in Australia though. Even if there are none, Australia has a perfectly good analog right here. But the biggest Lizard of all used to live in Australia. The Megalania.
"Welcome to Jurassic Park"....said the other Attenborough.

Perenties are such a kind of beautiful animals, their stare always resemble some kinds of sadness and wisdom. Also they are sleek and elegant, unlike komodos and water monitors which look bulky and clumsy.
nicely said. while i love komodos and waters, there's just something about the perentie that has a great appeal. a very unique animal indeed

Water Monitors are not slow...
@@The_Superpack not that much slow but still slow
It's not sad. It's hungry.
Their ability to continue breathing while running at these speeds make them excellent predators for these invasive rabbits
Seen plenty of these over here in Western Australia. When you get close to them, their breathing sounds truly terrifying
the people who disliked this video are rabbits!
Sandy Bad-Molars Gonzalez then why did you say people?
Yes, and they also deserve to be run down, killed and devoured.

My favourite monitor and animal, such a beautiful animal 💖
Komodos are the only monitors known to actually pursue and attack people so hes quite safe.
THAT IS A TYRANOSAURUS REX! THAT IS A DINOSAUR!
This perentie would know how to make a grand entrance. Very cool creature to actually see & possibly touch.
I saw this on my dvd Life in Cold Blood last night. David is very informational.
They remind me of raptors...and dragons! Its something about their faces as well! So stunning!
Smaug's head shape in the P.J. movie was highly based on monitors
