    On hot days I will carry a doggie water bottle and a small spray bottle to lightly spray some water on her coat

    Thank you so much for your tips. I live in Greece, which by definition is a rather hot place especially during summer. I'm about to get a puppy and I'm really concerned about the heat and what happens when we're not home and it's getting boiling hot. Your tips put part of those worries off my shoulder. Thank you so much.

      So pleased the tips have helped you. Greece definitely is hot, I've been lucky enough to spent a short time in Athens and Skopelos which were both baking! I've got a video series about getting a puppy you might be interested in: th-cam.com/video/qlZxgMmJ-bo/w-d-xo.html

    HELLO , I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR ADVICE , TO KEEP MY LITTLE DOG COOL , WITH A LOT OF FUR SHE REALLY SUFFER IN THE HEAT

    What I love about the outdoor agility class I go to is during the summer (our class is earlier morning anyway but it's the southeast US so it gets HOT fairly early in the late summer), there's a tub near a faucet that is filled and we can take our dogs to it for some refreshment. Usually we'll take them to the tub after taking a turn running a sequence of obstacles as a quick way to cool down. The dogs love it!

      Being proactive is definitely the way to go!

      Our Pets Health Definitely. We can choose to wear moisture wicking exercise clothes but they can't just unzip their coats to be outside in the heat so we need to advocate for them.
      I guess it also doesn't help dogs' cases that their body temperatures are higher than ours, huh.
      I also rake his coat on a regular basis, especially in the summer when he's shedding the most to help him lose some of that coat faster.
      While he's not of a breed you shave (unlike my family's Shih Tzu), his breeder does do some light clipping down of coat to her senior, retired female that seems to help her feel more comfortable in the summer along with things like what you've mentioned.

      Another point my agility instructor made that I found fascinating was an article she sent us about working on having them slowly building tolerance to the heat so they are less affected by it when they're running outside, for example.
      Still recommends having pools and such, of course, as it's not a fix on its own. Is that something you've heard of? I guess us humans do the same if we exercise outside; work our way up to building tolerance of the heat of the summer after having cold weather.
      As someone who lives in a hot and humid region of the US for most of the year AND is choosing to get into quite a few dog sports that may potentially expose my dog to a warm environment when we go to competitions, I appreciate videos like these!
      And I say this while we are having freezing temperatures right now!

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Building heat tolerance is very important yes. Sudden warm weather is just as dangerous, if not more so than very hot weather that has come on slowly, giving dogs (and us!) a chance to get used to it. Similarly, a dog who is used to exercising in the heat may be able to do a lot of exercise without developing a problem but in the same conditions, another dog who doesn't exercise much develops heat stroke after only a short walk. Humidity also makes things worse too. It's cold here too even though it's meant to be summer!

    Dr. Alex . I came home to my 7 year old german shepherd . With a runny noise and with Havey unusale panting.. and along with a inter coughing / chocking.. we have been having a heat wave here In Southern California. 100° average. I'm sure she had some type heat stroke. She didn't collapse that I know of . The issue is that we all leave for work for Round 8 hours average.. a day. When get home I have been bringing her In the ac room with me but yesterday she was put back pretty much night and day. For today rt b4 I got home.. Now that I see her symptoms I cooled her off by using some of your tips..and have a box fan on her like I always do when's she comes Inside. . I'm worried about any pertinent internal damage.. I noticed that's she has a little tremors as well when shes sleeping or at rest. But shes been doing that since day one somethings like if shes dreaming . But know after watching for few hours I see how her breathing seems restricted. Little hick up in belly and then with those little seasuers.. she has appetite still drinks water o. Demand. But I feel there's more I'm. seeing. Pls any suggestions. I maid an appointment with a veterinarian 1st thing in the morning ..

    Regarding sprinklers/pools, how worried should I be about fungus/bacterial growth in my dog's fur? If I let him use the sprinkler freely he's always at least damp, often soaking wet.

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If he's otherwise clean it shouldn't be a problem unless he really is wet all the time, in which case there is a chance of skin infection. Chances are he'll be drying of when he's resting

    • @meeau
      @meeau 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our Pets Health thank you for the answer! Most of him does dry up, but around the neck he stays damp for hours. A summer trim might do the trick, otherwise I'll use the other methods.

    I was told to never clip a border collie, their double coat is insulating for both heat and cold... is this true?

      no, I actually have a video planned on why this advice (which is very common) makes absolutely no sense
