A friends jeep had exactly the same noise. Like you Chris, two independent shops couldn't track down the noise. With the help of some friends we decided to see if we could replicate the sound in the driveway, by simply pushing the jeep with the engine off, and the steering at full lock. Surprisingly the noise was still there. Long story short.. Given pretty much everything in the front end had been replaced over the past few months..all bushes etc, we decided to focus on the front U joint area. First backing off the hub nut, and to our surprise the noise disappeared. And with the hub re tightened the noise returned. The solution was to disassembled the front knuckle assembly, clean off the rusty U joint and hub splines, check U joint, fresh grease and reassemble. Problem solved. Something to note is, the sound you're hearing is actually being released through the tin disk brake dust shield. If you place your finger on the cover with some pressure the pitch of the noise changes from a high pitch metallic 'twang', to more of a dull thud. Hope this helps.

Sounds like the half shaft u-joint is popping as it seems to occur when you turn the steering wheel: the ball joints don’t seem to be articulating when it pops. However drivetrain squeaks and clicks are difficult to diagnose, good luck!
Do yourself a favor when your in the North Central USA. Cruise though Duluth MN and then onto the area on the Kettle River just east of International Falls.....and near the Boundary Watters wilderness area. (Your likely not in shape for the Bourndry Waters.....grin. Rugged country and lots of room to explore what this great country used to be. Enjoy your travels.
Chris I agree. I also believe it's the axle u-joint or ball joint. My recent experience with my 08 JKU was all of the above. I say that because I just replaced everything (upper and lower ball joints) track bar and tie rods as well. The popping and death wobble went away. Take care and happy travels.

The noise in the front does sound like a axle u joint jack it up and turn the wheel left or right as tight as it will go then spin the wheel and see if you can feel any binding
Sounds like the track bar to me but there’s a lot of joints in a jk front end. My wife’s jeep was making that noise and it was the track bar bolt on the axle end.

My trackbar bushings were worn out and caused mine to pop when I turned the steering wheel left to right, especially if I was moving slow. iirc the bolt hole holding my trackbar bolt on the frame side had slop in it and when it was under a load it would pop and move.
Don't know how long you plan to stay in Maine but look up ghost trains of north Maine woods you might like it or the b52 crash site in Greenville both are cool historical sites
When you said it easily reproduced when the locker is on, that sound makes me wonder if the splines of one of the front axels are slipping in the carrier????

the camera placement could be doing weird things but it sounds like (also your description of "only underload") that it is coming from the rear left. Like e-locker sticking? You can reproduce the noise by turning right so that leads you to a front end issue but the video points to the rear. The front drive shaft is disconnected so load couldn’t effect the noise if it was front end. I would definitely pull the rear diff cover and have a look.

Have you checked your ball joints? Lift the Jeep up, put a long pole under the tire like a lever. Have Shannon lift the lever while you look at your ball joints for upward and downward movement.
Yep I was thinking u-joints. Be good to go through those anyways because that is the weakest link in the front axle. I switched to RCV's to avoid the inevitable failure.
FIXED. Had exact same popping/cracking noise coming from my 2020 Gladiator 1 year after I bought it. It was fixed by dealer. Repair invoice stated “install new inner shaft, bearing, bushing and outer shaft as per star case”. No problems since then! Hope this helps.

Hard to tell from any type of remote audio but I would start looking at outer u-joints then check diff for metal shavings. Sounds more like a bearing than a bushing to my ear
I had a similar sound on my 2021 Jeep Wrangler coming from my drivers side wheel, took the dealership 5 days to figure out it was the wheel bearing. Not sure your shop checked they or not, hope you get it fixed before your trip to Canada.. safe travels Chris..
i think the key here is 'with lockers on' and then you turn. -- if the lockers are on, turning puts the inside wheel (right wheel in your video) under more load-- its dragging on the ground because it wants to go slower than the outside (left) wheel. so what are the stresses there? CV axle splines, maybe front differential gears, maybe bearings? BUT-- that sounds one helluva lot like a ball joint popping too, like the previous poster said....its giving me PTSD from the time i had a ball joint start to go out in the grand canyon and prayed for it to hold on all the way back to denver.

When turning R is when we hear it but then you immediately turn straight. Try turning R and see if it happens twice. Does it do it turning L? Something in steering??
Don't discount the lake superior north shore. From Ontario to Duluth, Minnesota, highway 61 is a beautiful drive with good roads and plenty of food, fuel and camping.
I had loose threads in my adjustable track bar and they would pop as they rode over each other. I didn't know what it was until the end completely came out of the shaft.
Maybe mic on extension attached to spots. Or mechanic style solid rod stethoscope tied to spots.ight get you closer by following vibration. It sounds very hard bouncy not good long term.
Maybe the clicking noise comes from your suspension caused by the weight shift when you turn the wheel that hard...🤔- but Obviously I am not a car mechanic...

Is there anyway you can feel around for vibrations when the pop occurs, placing your hand on different components as someone turns the wheel. It sounds like a healthy pop, something that might cause a vibration.
Chris, Shannon's work doesn't want her working from Canada because they don't want to have to deal with paying Canadian taxes. As for the front end noise, it sounded like some type of spring twang. Like a spring was under tension and popped loose. Good luck with that one.
No it’s because they don’t want Americans coming across the border and possibly taking jobs away from Canadians, just like the Americans do to Canadians.
Could that piping noise be one of the joints in the front axles to each wheel. seem like in the video it was when you turned the wheel not going straight. like most just a guess
Even as a contractor/1099 employee if the company has any government contracts or subcontractor for another company you probably have to get some certification that allows you to outsource internationally and yes Canada is a sovereign country and yes she would be working on foreign soil plus any work she does Canada she now gets to pay taxes in Canada and she would need a work visa. Sorry for the long explanation.

To me, the sound may be the mud shield. Light metal and the ring is the give away to me.
The front left u joint between stub shaft and axle shaft. Will usually pop under load and steering esp when a needle is going bad.
Sorry that I missed you while you were in Maine. I could have showed you a few good spots. Maybe next time.

That was my first thought as well. Also check the ujoints on the axle. I’ve seen those cause a similar noise when worn.
My first guess is axle’s U joint and my second guess is ball joint. Glad to see you are getting better and hopefully we’ll meet out on the road.

Wondering if your spring is seated properly? Sounds a little springy. If you watch your spring, it moves ever so slightly.

For that kind of noise the best is to go by touch... not only by ears.. Touch the front bar who control the wheel im pretty sure your issue is there

Your pop sounds like a wheel issue. Move the front tire to the rear and see if the sound moves. Could be the same issue you had with your old wheels.
