Used these last year in my river system off the kayak. Depths typically aren't over 4 ft deep and water temps are much cooler so needless to say they did very well.

I like that scrubbing technique. When I'm fishing grass with hard bait jerk baits but lifting the rod up. Very deadly way to pull bass out the grass. Also nose rigging a 4in slug-go or a (solid body) fluke not split belly. The action is like watching a live minnows on the hook. When trying to swim but sinking from the hook weight. Mike you are the man I appreciate what you do and tell and show us. Like to see you come fish Carvins cove again now you got your tiny boat.

After Christmas I am so getting me a few of these. I'm already killing on jerkbaits but I imagine this will be a huge help! Really using my spinning rods more now after videos like this 👍🏻
Edit: holy crap! I found one of these 2 years ago and put it away in my projects box. Was just looking through it after watching this and discovered what I found! Getting the gear for modifications today so I can try this puppy out 🤙🏻

That was great info! One thing you might add is the importance of boat control too. The boat cannot be moving your line. Cannot! You can’t let the bait sit and suspend if the boat is dragging your line. Thanks Ike!

You could also get beefier split rings for the hooks to add more weight, and quite frankly, if you are able to open the split rings with your fingers, you probably should.

You mentioned the big Super Shallow Shad Rap but it’s not just a musky bait. If there are gizzard shad in your lake give it a try every time you are on a good bite. It will pay off big time. Every year some of my biggest bass of the year are caught on it and I have never seen anyone else use it.

I tried this mod on a #7 Shallow Shad Rap. Upgraded to #4 hooks and added a split ring and a snap and it still rises too fast I feel. Had to put on 2 suspend strips to help slow it a little, but still seems too fast of a rise to me. Am I doing anything wrong?

  • @billreed3785

Great Video. Do not use auto focus for video, you are not moving around a lot... close down your aperture a bit for a deeper depth of field so your hands will be in focus when you bring them up... use a non-variable aperture lens so when you zoom in it does not change the light entering the lens. If the smaller aperture makes it too dark, get more light or crank up the ISO a bit.

I’d pay for content like this if I had the money. It all goes back to seasonal behaviors, doesn’t it?
One topic I haven’t seen yet is, what species to fish for given conditions. Like, “For this terrain and weather, try for Kokanee / crappie / catfish instead of bass.” Call it Skunk Avoidance methods.

Shad Raps are poisonous to bass. Caught my personal best 10 bass at 53 lbs in the late 80's on a #5 shad rap with 10 lb mono on a Browning rod with Shimano Curado reel. Also caught 6 crappie all over 2 lbs. All on stumps in a farm reservoir in March. Reeling it very slow.
