    I also would not hesitate to eliminate someone who tried to kill me, especially unprovoked. But I can't deny that it's very difficult to listen to that boy wail for his mom as he's about to be murdered. This show kinda makes a point to remind you again and again that ultimately everybody is a person, even if some have drifted farther from their humanity than others.

    Fun Things in This Episode (NO SPOILERS):
    1. At the end of the last episode and this episode Joel is wearing one of Frank's shirts. And Ellie has Frank's gun, which she used to save Joel. It's a sweet reminder that Bill and Frank really were Joel and Tess's friends, and that even after death having friends in this world will save your life.
    2. When Joel asks Ellie in a worried voice, "Are you okay?" after they crash, he's probably thinking about the car crash where Sarah hurt her ankle.
    3. Perry, the guy who helps Kathleen, is the voice/Mo-cap actor for Tommy in the video game.
    4. All the little Dad Moments: Like when he tells Ellie the magazine isn't for kids (like she's not a 14yo living in a post-apocalypse), he knows the answer to the scarecrow pun cause it's a total Dad Joke, he tells her she should get more sleep in the truck, he tells her to go back behind the wall so she doesn't see him kill Brian, he tells her not to carry her gun in her pocket cause she'll hurt herself, when he finally laughs at the stupid pun cause, again, Dad Jokes.
    5. When Ellie asks Joel, "No one knows we're here right?" and he says no one will find them to comfort her, but then can't relax enough to sleep so he stands guard. Then the next morning he's chugging coffee, because he's exhausted. So at the end of the episode when they get surprised in their sleep it's partially because Joel is an old guy who hasn't slept in a long time, and because his right ear is exposed, the one that has hearing loss.

    seeing joel slowly let his walls down and warm up to ellie is the most heart warming thing ever. and it hurts even more knowing that joel, from the start, knew he was going to care for ellie which is why he initially blocked himself off from her (so he couldn’t form a connection and be hurt when she’s taken away)

    I loved how this episode just focused on developing Joel and Ellie's relationship. Joel acting as if Ellie is just cargo (okay, you keep telling yourself that)...I think he started caring for her the day they met. Whether he's consciously aware of it or not, he has this instinctual need to protect her (protecting people is the way he shows love, for sure). I feel like they are mirrors of each other; Ellie is more like Joel than Sarah was in many ways, and Joel is able to see himself reflected in the form of this 14-year-old teenage girl. That probably scares him even more, because by allowing himself to care, he's allowing himself to lose again, and that scares the crap out of him.
    Props to both Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal though...their onscreen chemistry/dynamic and off-screen friendship is so precious and really shines through. Pedro is really in his "single dad protecting a child/lone wolf and cub" era and we are HERE FOR IT. (Also it’s Pedro’s 48th birthday today! Wooh!)

    It’s not about a moral dilemma, it’s about demonstrating that “enemies” in tv shows, and games more specifically, are human beings with their own fears and motivations. It’s a more realistic portrayal than we’re used to seeing as viewers - it’s not just the main characters that have a backstory or loved ones or justifiable reasons for doing bad things…and sometimes YOU are an enemy to someone else.

  • @StarRoseAngelic
    @StarRoseAngelic ปีที่แล้ว +25

    9:30 I think the subtle distinction in this scenario is that this wasn't some militant, well-trained adult that Joel was taking out, it was a teenager barely older that Ellie, who was begging for his life and his mother. So in this scenario she was probably just more sensitive to the brutality of it. But I do agree, Joel didn't make a mistake here.

    I don’t play the game but I think the best argument for why it’s not a zombie show is because zombie’s are typically the “undead.” You become a zombie after dying and rising again. In this show, you are bitten, become infected, and transform into something else while still alive. So “technically” this is a post apocalyptic show about humans who become infected by fungus and those who have not. Of course all imo. Love your reviews

    fun reaction as always!! love the commentary n jokes hehe it's definitely a gratifying slower burn of a show, can't wait to see how you feel about their journey moving forward. as a huge fan of the game i rly loved this adaptation, they change things here and there but it's still considered the best game adapt. of all time!
    ** for anyone interested in some fun NON-SPOILERY tidbits (game to show changes, etc): kathleen (melanie's character) isn't in the game! neither is the focus on the folks joel kills (re: guy he stabbed, pleading for mercy, his community's reaction, etc.) the story does a great job of fleshing out certain aspects to give other groups/characters more life outside of the protagonists and it adds so much to world building (all these choices are also VERY informed by important future story themes so it's a great touch); game is known for its powerful writing so a lot of show dialogue/directing is CTRL+C/V from the source material which is PERFECT, like the iconic sexy mag scene. and another big scene in a few eps!); show lets us see things from ellie's pov/insight into her emotional journey which is a good character building addition/use of medium transition, since we play as joel for 90% of the game (ex. her "first kill" this ep -- joel is being drowned, you can't reach his gun, then you see someone's hand grab it in the water and shoot the perpetrator and the relief/shock from finally seeing it's ellie is pretty great. even some good aftermath dialogue i would've liked to see too, but still!); the joel, ellie n tommy mocap actors all make cameos playing in-game characters which is amazing -- and the marlene actress reprised her own character! (also hints to future characters sprinkled around); joel is even more of a closed off southern hardass in the game (typical rugged male lead), the show expands on his emotionality, grief and blatant ptsd symptoms. both are great and work for their versions, but i appreciate hbo's raw insight into his trauma/how it directly affects his actions!
    overall the show does a horrible amazing job of making a lot of the sad/gut wrenching scenes impossibly even sadder/more gut wrenching than the game by simply upping the characterization of the already well written characters. we do lose some good scenes and nuance unfortunately cus it's only 8 eps but for what they gave us? added tasteful twists and made everything feel fresh despite me already knowing what happens and i think that's fucking rad

    I think people say it's not a zombie show because the infected aren't dead? But just because you change the mechanic of how people become zombies doesn't mean it is not a zombie show. In the classic definition of zombies they would be corpses puppeted by someone using dark magic. Lots of zombie shows don't want to use the word zombie when they are staying away from a campy version of zombies.

    It's also hard to tell if someone who tried to kill you is actually remorsefull when you get the upperhand, or if they're just *that* good at acting remorsefull to manipulate you. I would likely use my upperhand to delete them too, but I will admit- there is a version where I would spare them if I won the fight. There is a chance that someone percieves you as a threat when you're not, and they'll attack in premature self-defense, but if I won that fight, they would have to agree to get restrained and would have to prove themselves for a long fucking time.
    Also, this is definitely a zombie-show, come'on- it's literally based on the zombie-concept. It's perfectly fine to call it a type of zomvie-verse. People are just being gate-keepers over any detail or info they can find.

    Technically it isn't a zombie show. When you finished the last episode, you'd know that it isn't really about zombies nor is it about the danger of other humans.

    You'll understand why we say it's not a zombie we later on. Wait till you finish the season or at least 3 more episodes haha.
    Or at least why I say it's not really Zombie show. It feels tangential to plot sometimes. Especially later. You're left with the impression that it's not about zombies at all imo.

    9:30 Like, I understand Rizzos logic, but that was a young kid, probably no more than 18.
    He could have easily been pressured and persuaded into attacking Joel and Ellie, one of the men Joel shot could have been his dad.
    So yes, the kid was obviously in the wrong, but that doesn't delete his humanity. There will still be a mother grieving, and that's enough to cause a moral dilemma to me, nevertheless a 14 year old girl who just shot someone for the first time (somone lucid). ❤
    Also, like.. try to put yourself in their shoes for real, don't use movie logic like try to actually imagine having to shoot another human. No matter if they shot at you first, it would be AWFUL.

    • @wwaxwork
      @wwaxwork ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. Everyone acts like killing people is easy. Even in a survival situation it's going to be an unimaginably hard mental hurdle to get over. In WW 2 the number of soldiers that actually shot their guns to kill, not just randomly fired in a direction and accidently killed, but aimed and chose to kill someone was as low as 15% in the infantry, and as high a a whopping 25%. Killing people without the right training, without the right bonded unit comradery where you fight to save your buddy not yourself is not easy. Except for psychopaths and the mentally ill, humans really don't like to kill each other, that's why we're still here.

    • @PinkPopcast
      @PinkPopcast  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh no: I know it’s incredibly difficult to kill someone. One of my BIGGEST pet peeves in film is how little they portray the emotional toll of taking a life…
      … that being said… we ain’t got time to consider that logic in this world. If I’m to survive I have one rule: don’t come for me and I won’t come for you.
      Their mom could grieve, but my mom taught me not to attack innocence.

    • @PinkPopcast
      @PinkPopcast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      … hypothetically 🤣 I’m so incredibly empathetic I would have to either turn my human emotions off to survive or risk being manipulated by people trying to kill me 😅

    • @Marina-cq2yt
      @Marina-cq2yt ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PinkPopcast I understand that, I just think that emotionally it's more nuanced than "if you come for me I'll kill you to survive", and that's what the scene in the episode tried to demonstrate. In the end, they did kill the guy because like you said, he was coming after them and at that point it was either kill or be killed, but that still leaves you with a dilemma and eventually, an emotional wound. ❤ love to watch you guys!
