Very nice car. Well built. Your improvements are very nicely done. As always with Meccano, the fine adjustments at the end are the most difficult, so that everything runs well. I always feel the same way 🙂👍

Thank you very much! It was frustrating at times, as I mentioned in the video, because a lot of the hardware is older and no longer straight. But by switching out pieces I finally got it to work.

Thanks! I keep tinkering with it, mainly because I’m putting off disassembling it, after it took so long to get it working consistently.

@@PK-mw7et oh dear, if you can afford the Meccano, leave it built until it becomes a dust trap!

Dear, I wonder where found that nic compact gearbox. I have already the third version but I am not satisfied. Is there a way we could come into contact? Kind regards, Henk

The gearbox I finally used, and that features in the video, is based on one used in a sports car model in the Meccano Set No 10 instructions. The model is referred to as 10.2. I modified it by adding compression springs to the layshafts so that the gears wouldn’t just engage at will and would return to neutral as the default. I changed the gear lever mechanism to be more like a real one, using a collar with 4 threaded holes as a gimbal.
The link to the website where I found the instructions is : www.meccanoindex.co.uk/Mmanuals/1954/Manuals/10'02-56-06-3.pdf. The first gearbox I tried was from the original instructions for the Bentley model, but was not robust enough and the gears would just disengage. The other boxes were my own attempts.
      Hope this helps!

Thanks, I have only looked to 4 gerars +R. I will try the 10.2 model to built a 4 of 6 gears.

@ To be clear, the box in the Meccano 1a Super model has 4 forward and one reverse gear. That’s the one I abandoned because I couldn’t stop the gears on the layshaft from disengaging when the transmission was under a load (such as when using the motor to propel the model). As I mentioned in the video, I made a couple of attempts of my own, before deciding to copy the gearbox from model 10.2, which has 3 fwd and 1 reverse speeds. I didn’t like the gear-lever of this design, and instead used a gimbal and fork (part 116a in the meccano list of parts) to engage and move the layshafts. If I were to remake the g box, I’d mirror image the design so the gear lever resembles a normal “H” selection pattern .
I’d be interested in what you come up with. I’d like to replace the 3 speed + R with a 4 speed + R if you find or make a suitable design.
