I thank you because it would be so much easier for you to just agree with them and move on, nodding along, regardless of whether or not you were certain the two of you are on the same page. I’ve enjoyed watching Lex, his rapport with guests and this overall audience grow over the years. Jack was a stellar guest for this show and Lex allowed him to feel comfortable enough to open up in ways other interviewers have not (others center on Twitter instead of changing up the dynamic). This is my second time watching this. I like being able to feel the wheels turning when both of these gentleman speak . They value the graceful ebb and flow mature conversations reflect. It’s interesting to note which sections I centered on this time around based on what I’ve learned since the 1st viewing and what we’re experiencing globally during the pandemic. Well done, Lex and Jack.

I was just flipping through some interviews that I hadn't seen and I really started to notice how much the last year has taken a toll on everyone. It's like we did a decade of 'growing up' or matured or whatever you want to call it in just one year. Covid aged us all.

Lex, I have no idea if you read these, and Joe is right, you probably shouldn't, but here is my 2 cent's worth of comment: I absolutely love hearing an engineer doing a podcast. You talk like I do, ask the questions I might, prod the guests in ways to make them start again from first principals; it is so satisfying! Keep up the great work!
Exhibit A: Pathologically ambitious person that's become too buried in his work to care about the damage he's perpetuating to the human race as a whole. One man, who through either laziness or disguised sociopathy, delegates all decisions that relate to the real human impact of what he's done to a corporate substructure that he barely even thinks about or understands. Dump all the effort into development, fire and forget on the implementation. "I don't know anything about the content policy on my platform, I'm not involved with that." - Not letting that gem disappear anytime soon. You think yourself industrious, but the truth is that you just do the few things you enjoy and tell everyone else and the consequences to get bent. Intellectually lazy, eternally daydreaming, and dangerously disassociated. You don't create a massively powerful novelty that obliterates the status quo of the commons and then just leave it in the charge of any moron your HR people like (in this case, a series of radical, disillusioned morons who then hire more morons) to moderate. What's next, seriously, what. is. next. You just gonna ID the entire first world in the name of "safety" and require an assigned ID chip to use the internet? You'd probably think it would be a good idea to shill out access moderation to a third party for cheap. Someone you unwittingly trust for counsel would tell you it's a good idea and you'd do it; bite off more than you can chew so hire someone else to chew it. You delegate the humanitarian decisions away because you're too lazy and overwhelmed by the real human impact of what you've wrought. When you create a new ideal method to do a thing, it becomes the de-facto method to do the thing. You can't dismiss yourself as not responsible, any half-wit with 10 minutes to watch a TH-cam video on game theory would name you responsible. The poor hapless souls who developed the atom bomb at least had the decency to hang their heads in shame and admit what they'd done. "No one has to use the atom bomb" - well no one "has to" use social media either. Just contribute to the dystopian damning all of mankind Mr. Dorsey, who cares? It was fun for a few years right... Had a good run. Rant over. Still fuming. Will probably die fuming.
So true. I used to think Jack was the root of the problem, but he actually seems pretty reasonable and clear headed. The problem is that he’s delegated many of the the most important aspects of his companies to incompetent people and he doesn’t check in. For example, customer service is extremely lacking on both Square and Twitter. Content moderation is a mess on Twitter. I get the sense that Jack isn’t passionate about either of these things, but his lack of involvement is killing the products. Another example is that he claims to love the open source community, but Twitter is so locked down these days and third party clients which once thrived are now strictly disallowed. Whether it’s Twitter being a place for free expression, or support of the open source community, it seems like he just doesn’t fight for what he believes in inside his own company. He just rolls over and let’s people working under him undermine what he claims to be trying to achieve.
What else is he supposed to do? personally moderate every fight between alex jones and rachel maddaow? he's an engineer he doesn't care. Engineers care only about couple of three things, code, big dick brain ego, and money. If I were CEO of twitter I would give two shakes of a rat's ass about the HR stuff.
I agree Twitter does seem to do more good relative to other big ones. I do however have come to question twitter's transparency in their actions of enforcing their platform policies. I think Jack is aware of the problem and while I don't agree with his way of doing things I respect him as a fellow human that's simply trying really hard to make the world a better place.
Lex Fridman is one of those people who's voice actually matches their face. I have listened to his podcast for years, so when I finally saw his face, I was like, "Yeah, that seems about right."
Lex, thank you for your podcasts. They are an inspiration and they are a valuable insight of how many of your gifted guests see the world and reason about it.
Love to see Lex as a host that can handle wrestling with serious minds. Joe on the other side has an audience that relates more to the “Dionysian” way of reasoning and acting. No wonder Joe was struggling making Elon feel as if he is in the right place with the support of alcohol. Either way, the world is a better place now that we have access to both Lex and Joe’s work. 49:59 The moment Lex looked up was a moment of transcendence. It was as if he had peered his head out over the dome. I got goosebumps. If anyone is, in fact, observing us, that look to the heavens was definitely noted.
Universal basic income will cost a fortune, disincentivize work, and most importantly not lead to a fulfilling life. People who do not work but are able should not receive income. Before the coronavirus pandemic happened, unemployment levels were at record lows. There is no need for UBI any time soon if ever.
@@MusicalMemeology That's nominal unemploymemt rate though. A lot of these are contractor jobs, and many people need to do several jobs just to get by. Not to mention a lot of white collar cognitive jobs will be replaced by AI so even if we don't do UBI now, making it a mainstream idea for people to consider is a good idea imo.
@@SafetyLucas UBI in my opinion actually gives you more freedom of work. UBI is not supposed to make you live a luxurious life without work but to cover the minimum so that you can choose to pursue what you want to do. So UBI does not disincentivize work, but rather incentivize people to do the work they want to. I mean it's not like people don't have hobbies. Also, at the bare minimum, UBI is a huge economic stimulus that itself would create jobs. For instance, you want to start a bakery, but at the moment it may be a bad idea, but if people have more purchasing power, starting a bakery may not be a bad idea. In the end, working people are going to spend the majority of their income, so injecting cash directly to people's hand is the most effective economic stimulus.
@@SafetyLucas In standard economics theory, people are incentivized by marginal benefit, and UBI does not change your maiginal income/labor. In fact, the point is to replace the current complicated welfare, which does deincentivize work through effective marginal tax rate over 100%.

Hah ! interesting; Hand movement and grunts,, our first communication method. Those who communicated most effectively had reproductive advantage. Those who had a genetic tendency toward such emotive movement passed on the trait. No longer necessary in language communication,,, but it can be used for enhancement.
Simon Sinek talks about trust in a very similar way: trust is given, mistrust earned. I think it’s phenomenal that Jack and the team at Square have taken this approach. It’s a choice to believe that people are inherently good.
I guess it would be appropriate to suggest Yuval Harari as a guest - given Dorsey's comments about him and his latest book (21 Lessons for the 21st Century). As Dorsey recognizes, Harari is someone we should all be listening to for insights about the past and the future.

I absolutely love hearing an engineer doing a podcast. You talk like I do, ask the questions I might, prod the guests in ways to make them start again from first principals; it is so satisfying!

Exhibit A: Pathologically ambitious person that's become too buried in his work to care about the damage he's perpetuating to the human race as a whole. One man, who through either laziness or disguised sociopathy, delegates all decisions that relate to the real human impact of what he's done to a corporate substructure that he barely even thinks about or understands. Dump all the effort into development, fire and forget on the implementation.
"I don't know anything about the content policy on my platform, I'm not involved with that." - Not letting that gem disappear anytime soon. You think yourself industrious, but the truth is that you just do the few things you enjoy and tell everyone else and the consequences to get bent. Intellectually lazy, eternally daydreaming, and dangerously disassociated. You don't create a massively powerful novelty that obliterates the status quo of the commons and then just leave it in the charge of any moron your HR people like (in this case, a series of radical, disillusioned morons who then hire more morons) to moderate.
What's next, seriously, what. is. next. You just gonna ID the entire first world in the name of "safety" and require an assigned ID chip to use the internet? You'd probably think it would be a good idea to shill out access moderation to a third party for cheap. Someone you unwittingly trust for counsel would tell you it's a good idea and you'd do it; bite off more than you can chew so hire someone else to chew it. You delegate the humanitarian decisions away because you're too lazy and overwhelmed by the real human impact of what you've wrought.
When you create a new ideal method to do a thing, it becomes the de-facto method to do the thing. You can't dismiss yourself as not responsible, any half-wit with 10 minutes to watch a TH-cam video on game theory would name you responsible. The poor hapless souls who developed the atom bomb at least had the decency to hang their heads in shame and admit what they'd done. "No one has to use the atom bomb" - well no one "has to" use social media either.
Just contribute to the dystopian damning all of mankind Mr. Dorsey, who cares? It was fun for a few years right... Had a good run.

So true. I used to think Jack was the root of the problem, but he actually seems pretty reasonable and clear headed. The problem is that he’s delegated many of the the most important aspects of his companies to incompetent people and he doesn’t check in. For example, customer service is extremely lacking on both Square and Twitter. Content moderation is a mess on Twitter. I get the sense that Jack isn’t passionate about either of these things, but his lack of involvement is killing the products. Another example is that he claims to love the open source community, but Twitter is so locked down these days and third party clients which once thrived are now strictly disallowed. Whether it’s Twitter being a place for free expression, or support of the open source community, it seems like he just doesn’t fight for what he believes in inside his own company. He just rolls over and let’s people working under him undermine what he claims to be trying to achieve.
What else is he supposed to do? personally moderate every fight between alex jones and rachel maddaow? he's an engineer he doesn't care. Engineers care only about couple of three things, code, big dick brain ego, and money. If I were CEO of twitter I would give two shakes of a rat's ass about the HR stuff.

of all the people who run social media platforms at the moment, jack heading twitter is the one I am most comfortable with.
I agree Twitter does seem to do more good relative to other big ones. I do however have come to question twitter's transparency in their actions of enforcing their platform policies. I think Jack is aware of the problem and while I don't agree with his way of doing things I respect him as a fellow human that's simply trying really hard to make the world a better place.
I like that 'Hire people from whom you can learn '. Many won't say it openly!

No wonder Joe was struggling making Elon feel as if he is in the right place with the support of alcohol. Either way, the world is a better place now that we have access to both Lex and Joe’s work. Universal basic income will cost a fortune, disincentivize work, and most importantly not lead to a fulfilling life. People who do not work but are able should not receive income. Before the coronavirus pandemic happened, unemployment levels were at record lows. There is no need for UBI any time soon if ever.
@@MusicalMemeology That's nominal unemploymemt rate though. A lot of these are contractor jobs, and many people need to do several jobs just to get by. Not to mention a lot of white collar cognitive jobs will be replaced by AI so even if we don't do UBI now, making it a mainstream idea for people to consider is a good idea imo.
@@SafetyLucas UBI in my opinion actually gives you more freedom of work. UBI is not supposed to make you live a luxurious life without work but to cover the minimum so that you can choose to pursue what you want to do. So UBI does not disincentivize work, but rather incentivize people to do the work they want to. I mean it's not like people don't have hobbies. Also, at the bare minimum, UBI is a huge economic stimulus that itself would create jobs. For instance, you want to start a bakery, but at the moment it may be a bad idea, but if people have more purchasing power, starting a bakery may not be a bad idea. In the end, working people are going to spend the majority of their income, so injecting cash directly to people's hand is the most effective economic stimulus.
@@SafetyLucas In standard economics theory, people are incentivized by marginal benefit, and UBI does not change your maiginal income/labor. In fact, the point is to replace the current complicated welfare, which does deincentivize work through effective marginal tax rate over 100%.

What a genuine person
Simon Sinek talks about trust in a very similar way: trust is given, mistrust earned. I think it’s phenomenal that Jack and the team at Square have taken this approach. It’s a choice to believe that people are inherently good.

This was frustrating. Dorsey must be pushed to admit (and hopefully end) censorship by Twitter.

Eating 3 times a day is artificial. I started listening to my body instead of forcing calories into myself. I usually eat about 1.5 times a day. The real question is... how many other habits do we have that are artificial? Sleep times... bathing frequency... work hours... 2 party systems...
@@DeadSmoke813 Don't work your shitty job then complain man...look if you plan the meal to have protein and vitamins and nutrients you'll be fine. the first day will be hard that why you start on the weekend or an off day so you aren't fighting the growling stomach during the work day. after two days or so you get used to it and feel healthier. plenty of jobs that require physical labor and offer better hours too my man.
