Thierry Henry on Unai Emery: “He’s a tactical genius. He always goes out there and makes sure his team has an advantage tactically because that’s how he operates. We all know what he did in Spain. For me, obviously this is no disrespect to what Mikel Arteta is doing and is doing extremely well for Arsenal, I just thought that if we kept him [Emery] a bit longer he would have been a success at Arsenal.” 👑

Henry is wrong. People really forget how shit he was at Arsenal, especially towards the end. Idk why people are constantly playing revision with his time at Arsenal just because he did well at Villareal and now Villa afterwards. He's a great manager, but sometimes it just doesn't work out at some clubs, and that was the case with Emery and Arsenal. it is what it is.

As an Arsenal fan, I'm sick of hearing this narrative. I've always said the same thing when it comes to Emery. If he had of stayed in charge for the rest of 'that' season we would have been relegated. The place was toxic, the ground was empty and it was getting worse week by week. Emery was incapable of turning the club around. So "no disrespect to Arteta" is actually a huge disrespect. Arteta has turned the club around and he is solely responsible for where we are at right now. I honestly don't care that we haven't won anything, I know that we will but I love football again under Arteta and that's been missing for a long time. Henry speaks from his emotions rather than rationale and It's disappointing to see legends like Henry sometimes diluting facts now to appeal to a wider audience and boost their pundit popularity status by appearing controversial. It's as if TV producers have told him and Wright to tone down their previously fierce Arsenal loyalty. The fact is, Arsenal don't sack managers casually: they have had *only 6 permanent managers in the 62 years before appointing Emery* in 2018 (not counting 1-year interim managers in 1986 and 1995/96). Arsenal tend to hold on their manager beyond their peak years at the club (e.g., Neill, Graham, Wenger). Emery is a good, experienced manager but at Arsenal, he was often poor with tactics, decisions, communications and man management. The rebuild was too big for him and he didn't cope very well with that or the demands of the EPL: he was just not good enough but later brought the experience of that EPL baptism of fire to Villa. He inherited an average Arsenal squad overall but, within it, there was genuine talent and/or experience in the likes of Saka, Martinelli, Xhaka, Willock, Martinez, Aubameyang, Ozil, Leno, Lacazette, Monreal, Ramsey, Guendouzi, Welbeck, Iwobi, Mkhitaryan and Nketiah, and he still could not consistently get the best out of them. He made good future signings in Saliba and Martinelli, a good but already injury-prone Tierney and questionable signings/loans like Torreira, Luiz, Sokrates, Suarez, Ceballos, Pepe and Lichtsteiner. And tactical errors like frequently playing 3 CDMs and at least once, playing Torreira as the CAM while leaving Ozil on the bench as Arsenal lost the game, were ridiculous. The way Arsenal rolled over and lost 4-2 to Chelsea in the Europa League final was defining of Emery there, and in his second season at Arsenal, despite a decent start, that fell away and some of the performances were incredibly poor as he seemed to create uncertainty in the squad and Arsenal languished in the lower realms of the EPL table. At one point Arsenal had just 4 wins in 13 games, conceding up to 30 shots in a game (e.g., vs Watford) or scoring 4 goals away (to Liverpool) and still losing the game. It was chaotic. And keeping it real l regarding the 'Emery for Prime Minister' revisionists, during the second half of last season, despite all the praise heaped on him, managing to qualify for the UCL and beating Arsenal (tired and distracted between the controversial Bayern UCL QFs); Emery engineered only 6 more wins while fighting to qualify, and all against relegation strugglers or teams lower in the table, i.e., Burnley, Luton, Sheffield Utd, Forest, B'mouth and Wolves plus major home defeats to Man U, Spurs (1-4) and Newcastle (1-3) and thrashings to Man City (4-1) and Crystal Palace (5-0). That's Emery in the EPL, and Villa qualified 2 points ahead of Spurs, primarily because Spurs fell away and lost 5 of their last 7 games, yet Emery was being lauded as an uber-genius then too. It's all nonsense: Chelsea is not critiqued each season for sacking Ancelotti after he won trophies with them and finished second, then eventually ended up at Real Madrid and won the UCL. This kind of rose-tinted revisionism of Emery's time at Arsenal is just low-key sniping at Arsenal and Arteta: the post-Wenger job was just too big for Emery, regardless of what he did before or afterwards. Period!

I think what Thierry said was wrong, because imo Arteta picks better players to buy than Emery would have. I know that Edu does a lot of negotiations and scouting, but Aretea I feel knows what he wants. Also Arteta used business strategy with the owners. He showed a plan, the budget needed, the return on investments, everything Kroenke's would need, to part with money. He did that and the Kroenke's backed his business plan. Emery doesn't even have the language competency to communicate any form of business strategy. Emery is the sort of manager you would want to get in after Arteta. Give him a team like this and he could work with it. But Arteta isn't finished, he earned the right to manage the team he's built.

Emery just had the air of a man who’d always be dining out on 5th place. He’s still doing that at Villa although it’s easier to get away with it up there. He had some good days at Arsenal, but his ingenious half time substitutions were usually putting right his starting 11s…a clever coach with fatal flaws is how most Arsenal supporters remember Emery. I wish him well but I’m bloody glad he’s not still at the Emirates. We’d be 5th and losing semifinalists in the Europa.

The problems with Arsenal right after Wenger's resignment is the vacuum of power structure and the team culture of top 4 complacency. The whole club was in a big big post-Wenger transition. Emery was brought in by Raul Sanllehi, with Sven Mislintat 'Sven Mislintat' in charging of scouting. That structure did not work and even the 70M flop 'Pepe' was signed despite Emery wanted Wilfred Zaha. Arsenal performed worse and the fans were turned against Emery and the team. Mikel has done a great job by constantly improving the squad and installing winning mentality. He also make the fans united again and enjoy watching Arsenal. Mikel is a bit of lacking in Europe competition but more improvement soon will come. Emery is very very experienced in Europe with multiple success and surely his coaching progresses well after his time in Arsenal. But I would not change a thing with Mikel in charge. There is only one Super Mike.
