Thank you for a brilliant video. I'm plucking up courage to build my first RC yacht and doing a lot of Internet research. Reading up about sail servos I saw several criticisms of winch servos saying that the sheets can jump off the drum if the sail suddenly goes slack. Your solution fixes this brilliantly. I don't know if it is generally done or unique to you. I love all your videos. They are really helpful to a newby like me, but also inspiring and beautifully presented.
I wish I could personally give this 1000 likes. You answered a question I’ve had for a long time: how do you keep the winch lines taught? This is genius! I’d only just asked this exact question on a previous video then TH-cam suggested this video to me! Your video was clear and concise. I am indebted to you. I don’t know any other sailors so this question remained unanswered for a long time. Thank you!!!
Thanks mister Gary. I rebuilding my Spanker open sailboat with a Servo winch. 1.24 meter long. Your instructions really help me a lot. Stay in good health. Regards Bart
A word of caution. If you haven't set up a winch before DON'T screw down the drum to the servo. This way if you get mixed up the drum is ripped off the winch without burning out the winch motor. A great video with good clear explanations .
Gary, that was very helpful. Many thanks. Do you ever use the servo with long control arm method of sheet control? If so perhaps you could do an instructional video on that as well
I love your videos! I've got a problem with the winch line set up. Where and how do you hook the sails up to the sheet?? Please help. It's driving me crazy. I got it all set up like you do but you never show how to hook up your sails to the sheets. I would be so happy if you could make avid in that. Thank you.
There will be many variations of this depending on boat's arrangement and sail plan. Generally, in the case of sails fitted with booms, the sheet will attach to the boom. My schooners are set-up so the sheet has a two part advantage over the boom. This video shows how that is set-up. th-cam.com/video/f93MWmfWSeg/w-d-xo.html
Whatever the vessel, I think we all want one!! Will have to patiently wait. Brilliant video . Thanks Gary. Your workmanship is really top class. Everything to clean and crisp. I really must tidy up my act and take more care. You are an inspiration. Is the other winch for a genoa? Hee hee....I hope so. Pete
nice one gary!!! do you have any idea about square rigger rising and lowering sails? how mani winch servos do i need for a 3 mast(11 sails) and what kind of small winch servos do you recomend? thanks for answering! greetings mike
Thanks for asking but it's not from a kit. The boat in this video is my Gaff Cutter 'Flyer' design scratch built from plans. Plans for this boat and others can be found at www.bearospaceindustries.com/boats2.html
Yo Gary , how things in Ensenada? I asked about this set up a while back, and Voila!! there it is.. Many, many thanks. I am building a scratch built , somewhat Bluenose, and you have been very much appreciated. I saw the video of you sailing here in San Diego, I am sorry I missed you, but like I said you have been very inspirational to me. Thanks mucho.
Thanks Gary, could you show us your SV's very keen on schooner type, someone I know build a scaled down schooner from bamboo and has sailed with his family to Thailand, look up Bamboo Schooner and you will find the project , Mnay Thanks for sharing with us
Hi Gary. Could you just clear one point please? The HS 875 winch drum has two channels for the winch line. How do we rig the lines actually to the drum? Cheers. Pete.
Hi Peter, One end of the line fits to one of the channels, the other end of the line to the other channel. The line passes thru a hole in the channel and a stopper knot keeps it there, as seen at (2:00) in the video. This is a secure arrangement which cannot 'slip'. Cheers, Gary
Hi Garry I got the winch line for the main sail set up. I am now setting up the headsail winch . I am using the taranis tx. I'm trying to set up with the left slider but can only get 2 turns on the winch. I did check the calibration of the sticks. Are 2 turns enough for the headsails? Can i get more movement out of the slider? see more below. Think i got it sorted. Edited the channel with right slider. Scroll down to SIDE and select - - -. This give movement both ways giving 4 turns. now i just have to adjust end points.
Hi Robert, good to hear you got the control sorted out. Setting end points for the gaff cutter 'Flyer' - The headsails require about 15 inches of travel which will provide sufficient slack for the lazy sheets. The main sail can use about 16 inches of travel before the boom lies against the shrouds.
@@sailtails2775 Hi Gary, Thanks. Had some fun and help from wife getting line through holes on drum.We are in lockdown so plenty of time to get things done. Stay safe.
The small pulleys came from a "Clothesline Separator" purchased at Home Depot. A larger pulley can also be found as a "Clothesline Pulley" at Home Depot. (Home Depot is a home supply store chain in the USA). The drum atop the winch servos is provided with the Hitec HS-785HB sail winch servo
Congratulations on your production Gary! Beautiful craftsmanship as well!
This is a great video Gary, thanks for posting. It answers all the rigging questions, but now tell us about the vessel!
Thanks for asking about the vessel, hope to show & tell soon

that is great work Mr. Gary I hope to find datasets about beast sail angle deboned on the direction of the wind and voyage.

Once again Gary another life saving video, thankyou so much 👍👍👍👍👍
Glad to see you again Gary!!!

Hi Robert. Yes, I use an Arm Servo in my Sloop Emma design. It is very simple and is shown clearly in the Sloop Emma plans from Bearospace
Outstanding….thank you….happy Christmas to you and yours
Very helpful for working out the winch positions for my Bristol Pilot Cutter. Thank you.

Hi Garth, There are videos of my schooners on this sailtails channel. I'll look for the Bamboo schooner, sounds interesting.
Very cool.
Do you need a motor for each mast or do all three work from one motor?
On my Schooners, (Irene & Annie) one sail winch controls all 3 sails. Simple. Cheers !
