    My experience with webdav has been exciting but a let down for what we do.. too many .tmp files being generated, excessive user authentication prompts.. source insecurity on MS office applications. its quite limited on what can be considered reliable file sharing. but in essence it does work, i suggest downloading data locally, editing and overwriting instead on most collaborative file types

    My router had created and mapped external ports for the ports created by WebDav inside the Synology NAS. These external ports had 5 digits. I needed to use these external ports in Cyberduck and Mountain Duck to get it to connect to the NAS. The ports that get setup inside the Synology NAS are not visible outside my network as my router had created separate external ports.

    Honestly, I didn't understand clearly. Can you make a video for WebDAV Server side setup - step by step and how to mount the drive on the client PC, possible errors might occur, Port forwarding if required so that the person will be able to complete using your steps. Thanks.
    In my case: I setup webDAV server, on client section I tried but there is no clear video which actually explains how to do it. Some say use Net drive, some say Webdrive, Some has shown direct map drive. None of them working for me.

      Hello,
      On the Synology server side, it is at 06:00. So nothing really special to configure. The ports are the minimum to configure.
      For incoming traffic from the internet, you'll need a NAT rule stating that traffic from the internet on that port should be forwarded to the NAS on the configured port.
      On the client side, you can just "connect a network drive" in "my computer" with the format mywebdavserver.com:myport
      As HTTPS should be used, Windows will ask that a valid certificate is installed for the webdav service on the NAS (i have a how to on the matter).
      MAC computers or third parties webdav client might not need to ask for a valid server side certificate.
      Without knowing exactly your needs or scenario, i can not say much more.

    i need your Help
    My PC cannot find WebDav when I use the same network (router) but when I connect my PC using Mobile Hotspot WebDav it works again...
    DNS Problem

      Hello,
      Indeed you might have a hairpinning problem.
      If your DNS entry states that your webdav DNS resolution gives the public IP of your internet box, when you are inside your LAN, your connection will fail.
      To solve this, you have to have a separate DNS entry for when you are in your LAN. The DNS entry will state that your webdav entry = your private / LAN NAS IP.
      You can either try to configure that in your home router (not all support the creation of a static DNS entry).
      Or, worse case, configure your NAS to be the DNS server for your LAN (this is a bit of work).

    hey so i didnt exactly follow your video I'm out here looking for a solution. i setup webdav on my nas and I used nginx with a domain that I own and it was an easy setup since I have a static IP. now that I've mounted the network drive on my windows PC I am unable to figure out how to get the correct shared folder to show up since the mounted drive only shows "home" folder and the one I want to mount is "/homes/user". i have tried checking the permissions of that folder but that didn't help.

    How about Let's Encrypt and Synology's DDNS.

      Hello,
      Those points are covered in other videos on the channel 🤗. How to use lets encrypt, how to use lets encrypt with Syno reverse proxy…
      Don t hesitate to ask questions 🤗

    Wait, did I snooze when you actually set things up? It seems you just jumped from explaining what WebDAV is... to then connecting to it... ok... but the steps in between? Certificates? how? What? Huh?

    • @synologysecurity
      @synologysecurity  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      Aha you did not snooze. Indeed i may have gone too fast. In order not to repeat things too much over and over in my videos, i have not repeated the "how to" on how to get and use the certificate on the synology. This is another video on my channel.
      The most important goal here is to explain the importance of WebDAV as i see a lot of people wanting to expose SMB over the internet. I had a focus more towards this aspect.
      But if you have questions, feel free to ask.

      @@synologysecurity Thanks. I have a newbie question. I am using Synology Drive and File station with HTTPS to access NAS files remotely. I have a DDNS+HTTPS w cert setup with myds.me. What is the advantage of using WebDAV? It looks quite complicated. Thanks

    • @synologysecurity
      @synologysecurity  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@reubenha1 Hello Reuben,
      It's not too complicated as long as you know the prerequisites :).
      If I just talk about the differences :
      In terms of functionalities, with WebDAV you can
      1) mount your NAS as a network drive in Windows, Mac and your smartphone, which is cool.
      2) also be multiple users editing the same file
      3) Use advanced encryption tools that works on your phone that would need webdav to connect to your NAS (cryptomator, boxcryptor). I m talking about it in other encryption videos (but not into details yet).
      4) WebDAV is faster to access your NAS and open files compared to needing to connect to FileStation with a browser
      5) WebDAV won't take space on your computer compared to Synology Drive in a full sync mode
      With FileStation and Drive, you can create shared links, not through WebDAV.
      In terms of security, Drive and FileStation have 2 factor authentication that can be enabled, which is not the case for WebDAV.
      As your question is quite general, i may have forgotten some things ;)
      I have made this video because i'm seing some users exposing their SMB port over the internet and that should never ever happen. It was more to present an alternative and how to configure it / use it. If you are not exposing the SMB, WebDAV is a nice to have, not a must to use ;)

    Hi,
    Im trying to set up my NAS for remote file access. I've downloaded the WebDav package from the DSM package center, but i cant open it!!!
    It only says that it is running. how do i open the app so that i can configure it?
    I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the package, & restarting the DSM to no effect.
    Any help would be much appreciated!

    • @synologysecurity
      @synologysecurity  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      Ok so when you installed the package, did it appear in the "Main Menu" ? (where you can see all your applications, by clicking on the upper left corner of the DSM Windows).
      On my side, i can open the package from the Main Menu and the Package Center
      You should have the WebDAV Server icon, so you can configure the package, like 06:00
      But maybe check if you have the permissions to use the package. You can try, for a test to go at : Control Panel --> Privileges --> WebDAV Server, Grant this privilege to all user by default : YES
      You can all also check :
      Control Panel --> User --> EDIT "Your User" --> Applications and check that you are allowed to use the WebDAV Server.
      If you change your privileges, refresh your browser tab, to see if now you can access the package like in at 06:00
      After this, get back at me and we'll see how we can test that everything is working.

    You lost me at "certificates". You need a step-by-step example including implementation of certificates.

      Hello,
      What is it that needs clarifying with the certificates ?
      I have some videos about that on the channel, but maybe i can explain if you have a question.

      Synology Security everything. I understand a fair amount about networking but I’m a novice. I’m just now considering my first NAS for personal use so this is the first time I’m taking it seriously and I’m trying to learn as much as I can.

      I understand your are a novice in the field and welcome to this exciting new world.
      well I m covering a lot of things in general and in this particular video, the advantages of WebDAV especially over the internet and how to set it up, as I see people using SMB over internet which is a no-no.
      I just would like you to tell me if possible what is of interest to you in this video or another one so I can be more precise and tell clearer explanations. Otherweise I might not be able to be more precise and just repeat the same thing :(
      Don’t hesitate to ask specific questions (ore more general if you want)

    • @AlergicToSnow
      @AlergicToSnow 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Synology Security well, I’m not sure what I don’t know so I don’t really know what to ask for or how. I’m 90% certain I’ll be going with a Synology NAS. My use cases require opening up the NAS to the internet for myself, others with accounts on the NAS, and sometimes others who do not have an account setup on my NAS. I’m trying to learn about the most secure way to accomplish this. I learned from this video that WebDAV is best method (thank you). What I’m unsure of is how to implement my scenarios the best way on a Synology. There are videos that show the process, and a few are quite good, but few explain in any detail why I should enable a particular setting or why not. I’m technically oriented, and detail oriented. I definitely can understand if it’s explained.

    • @synologysecurity
      @synologysecurity  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      AlergicToSnow I hope I m one of the good ones 😂
      Joke aside, you should look at my videos on secure architecture and the other on best practices. I saw a lot of videos and people are not always explaining why you do this or that, the implications.... Also some are not precise enough or miss a lot of things. I m trying to be exhaustive but it s not easy for sure.
      As I did for some viewers, if you have some questions I will either answer you in the comments or make a video.
      For the WebDAV, it s a solution if you want to have a mounted network drive in windows or Mac for example. But you could access your shares in a different way with the synology drive package with the files being synchronized in a « Dropbox » fashion.
      There is a loooooot you can do.

    Hi, It show "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another" at th-cam.com/video/6-yjcMqphtE/w-d-xo.html .
    I also tried tested with URL ipaddress:5006 it show "The requested URL / was not found on this server"

    • @synologysecurity
      @synologysecurity  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello,
      There are 2 ways to test, but try the second one first as it is the easiest.
      1) you can mount your webdav as a network drive. BUT you need, on windows, to have a valid certificate.
      2) You can go through your web browser BUT you can't browse your folders in a browser with webdav like FTP. You NEED to enter the COMPLETE URL that ends up opening a file : ipaddress:5006/YourSharedFolder/YourFolder/mydocument.pdf (for example)
      If the 2) works, than your webdav service works correctly and you can go one with attempting the network drive.

    • @sozai4957
      @sozai4957 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@synologysecurity
      Wow, i can get the file follow the second ways!
      But if i change to folder path, it show "You don't have permission to access /folder/folder on this server." i already assigned everyone to access that folder, how come it still cannot access?

    • @synologysecurity
      @synologysecurity  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well thats good :)
      If you have this message through the browser, it's normal and by design, You cannot access folders or browse folders with WebDAV on browsers. If you want to be able to browse inside your folders, you will need a WebDAV client (a software) or mount a network drive in Windows ;)
      I think there are also some plugins for browsers that will allow webdav browsing, but i don't know them.

      Win Whitmire Hello,
      Which issue are you referring to ?
      Yes there is a lot of information but it is important to have a glimpse of some important security concepts and how problems could be avoided by using another solution.
      I m not sure of what you mean by « assumes a lot »
