NAIL THE MIX is an online mixing school created by Joey Sturgis, Joel Wanasek and Eyal Levi - the guys who produced bands like TDWP, Chelsea Grin, Blessthefall, Machine Head, Monuments, Miss May I, Of Mice & Men, Reflections, Born Of Osiris, Asking Alexandria and dozens more of this generation's best metal bands.
Every month, NAIL THE MIX members get exclusive access to the REAL MULTI-TRACK SESSIONS from a REAL ALBUM, and a 6-8 hour live streaming class from the producer who mixed it. These are the actual sessions by bands like Gojira, Meshuggah, Periphery, Papa Roach, Machine Head, Bring Me The Horizon, A Day To Remember and more - and NTM is the only place in the world you'll get access to them!

One of the failings of these URM sessions is really showing here. Jens mixes rhythm guitars by..... turning the level up. They were recorded perfectly, so they already did what he needed them to do. To really take advantage of a guy like this, you need to show us how he makes decisions in the tracking phase. Your average engineer will never get tracks as easy to mix as Jens records himself.

Thanks for including the BB N105 Jens! Love seeing it used to shape distorted rhythm guitars. 🤘

    not really educational video
more like a demo like addvert and a "cut-scene"

How do you determine what levels each Instrument should be in relation to each other for a metal mix?

Your ears? Having a good fader mix before you even touch an eq/compressor?

That's a bit of a loaded question. There's too many variables but as a general guide, start with the (relatively) loudest instruments, IE. kick & snare. Aim the peaks for -6dB and adjust the rest in relation to those (using only faders as xAngrycatmanx mentioned). After that, you can spend the next ten years deciding which of the available plugins suit your needs best. A reference track helps, that is, something similiar you aim for. If you're really struggling with the concept or haven't got a reference in mind, you can use pink noise as a reference point. Also, you'll need good monitors and/or headphones.

i typically start with the drums, then the guitars, then bass, then any other instruments in order of how important i feel they are
