  • After the Army, Kenneth attended school and began to experience PTSD symptoms that interfered with his studies. He reached out for mental health support through VA, where counseling and other treatments helped him work through his challenges with PTSD, substance misuse and family issues. Treatment gave him the tools to manage his symptoms and enjoy his passions - including reading, meditation, running and spending time with his children.

Why does the VA make it so hard to get help?

      Hello @panfergan,
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ programs, services, and resources (those generated in our resource locator) are funded by the U.S. Government and are for Veterans (and their family members) only.
Whether VA health care is free or offered at low cost (with a co-pay) to a Veteran depends on a variety of factors. You can learn more about the process for enrolling in VA health care, eligibility, and priority groups at: www.va.gov/health-care/eligibility/. If you need additional help, please call VA’s helpline for enrollment and eligibility questions at: 1-877-222-8387.
Information about the resources in the SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) Behavioral Health Treatment Services Locator can be found here: findtreatment.samhsa.gov/. The Behavioral Health Treatment Services Locator is a U.S. Government-funded tool that can help any U.S. citizen (Veteran or non-Veteran) find treatment facilities with specific services in their area. Many of the services and programs are not free; however, information about finding no-cost/low-cost options may be located using SAMHSA’s National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357).
The National Resource Directory (NRD) provides access to services and resources at the national, state, and local levels to support the recovery, rehabilitation, and community reintegration for service members and Veterans. More information about resources within NRD can be found at nrd.gov/About-Us.
