In the early stages of Atrial Fibrillation (Afib) the condition is paroxysmal for most patients. That means that you're in and out of Afib and have episodes that will last a few minutes to hours and may not recur for months. This pattern may delay the diagnosis, because when you go see your primary care physician or cardiologist, your heart may be in normal rhythm and an ECG performed at that time would be normal. For many patients this process continues for months or even years until eventually the condition becomes more frequent and an episode of afib is documented.
If a patient has persistent afib, they are continuously out of rhythm. That means that any time they have an ECG performed, it will document the arrhythmia. It is therefore easier to diagnose afib in this group of patients.

Can there be a logical explanation: my Apple Watch has not sent one warning sign. I even did many EKG during each day of the past 3 weeks - always a sinus rhythm. But I realized just today, that my blood measuring device (OMRON x7) gave some hints concerning irregular heart rhythm (but no specific AFIB). Is there a logical explanation? Device type?

The BP machines may detect "irregular rhythm". This could be cause by AFib and also a few other arrhythmias. Premature contractions, like PVCs or PACs could cause BP machines to detect irregular rhythm and wearable devices would not show AFib.

The decision to use oral anticoagulation is based on a patient's risk if stroke. Typically doctors use the CHADS2Vasc score to assess your stroke risk. If the risk is elevated, patients should stay on stroke prevention even if they are not having frequent episodes of AFib.
