This is by far my favorite vlog you have done! I love all your hiking videos. Even though I still visit the GSM several times a year Like I have for the past 25+ years, saddly because of health reasons I can no longer hike or just take quiet walks through the park I love so dearly. You do such a awesome job of showing people to get out of their cars and for a little away get away from the "touristy" part of GSM!! AWESOME AWESOME video PLEASE PLEASE keep them coming! Great Job you 2! :) :)

wow that Avent cabin was very nice. Its amazing its been kept so well. Probably because it is so far off the road, jerks don't want to go so far. That green cabin at the beginning was once a really nice place also. The funny little turret porch on the front was interesting.
If I was hiking and had to find a place to camp if it was too late,I don't think Id mind trying to sleep in it if I had too. lol
That window reminded me of another painter's home studio in Brown County Indiana, T.C.Steele's studio barn has huge windows in one side to let in light for when he painted.
I looked her art up and she painted very interesting way as her paintings look almost prismatic, like a stained glass window effect, multi-colored across the entire work. Very unique, I think Ive seen her work before somewhere, probably in a Smoky Mountain book or long time ago in old Gatlinburg when it was still had artist colony folks.
We have a Ann Varner painting from back in the 70's. My mom told me that they had bought some Iva Prince paintings in the 70s also.

So glad y'all & others are ok from that falling tree. Thank y'all for taking us on another great adventure, beauty, neat & unique places. Love it! ❤😁 Dawn: 'Screamed like a girl" & she chuckles! 😆 After camera starting going in & out & y'all were back inside showing the fireplace, before cutting off, I saw what looked like an orb go shooting upwards. I slowed it down to see if it could've been dust or a bug, but looked like an orb. Hmmmmmm..... weird happenings there at the end. Glad y'all are safe! 😁

I came across you guys a little while back I think you guys are the sweetest people I think I've ever seen... I was just starting to lose faith in humanity and you guys restored it, thank you for the wonderful adventures. I can watch from the comfort of my home recliner in my pajamas you guys are doing all the hiking and hard work for me LOL... just make sure you stay hydrated and bring bug spray and sunscreen.
Anyway, I am a BIG BELIEVER in the Paranormal totally believe in it we'll get into that another day but at the end that was DEFINITELY an ORB and yes her spirit is definitely definitely there if your wife didn't speak after you said hello hello you might have gotten an EVP but anyway great adventures and I look forward to many more.
    God bless, stay safe!
That trail definitely looks very unsafe I wonder why they don't keep it up a little more being that it is a registered Historic Site that bridge looked too scary for me LOL

Thanks for taking us to thecabin Will and Dawn.It is very secluded. Wonder if there was ever a better way to get to it when it was occupied. I love seeing how well preserved it is and hope everyone continues to respect it. I often wonder how the area was before the area became a national park. I love the history of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I have watched vlog s about The Elkmont area which is quite interesting. Wasn't there a big resort hotel in that area that people would come to go escape the city life of Knoxville?

She died in 1959. I wonder if that cabin has been empty since then. That's quite a departure from growing up in an antebellum mansion (per Wikipedia). And her son lived to be 100. BTW, that sketchy looking footbridge looked fun.

    • @yankeeinthesouth

The lease remained in her family until 1992. I suspect it may have been used from time to time, but I doubt anyone lived there on a permanent basis after she did.
The truly interesting part is that the National Park Service didn't want to maintain this as they felt it wasn't historical with the rest of park structures (Cades Cove, etc.). The family and her friends got the cabin listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and that forced the park service to maintain it.

My first visit here was February 2017 when there was no leaves on the trees and you could see the cabin from the Jake's Creek Trail but would imagine in the greenery of the summer you couldn't. Well worth the trip as Elkmont has so much to offer other than deteriorating vacation homes you just have to get out an explore.

Wow, so much to say about this video. You just posted & already so many comments. The floor looks like it is in really good shape. Even when I was younger I probably would not have hiked that far back in through all you encountered. This was truly a great video, and the knowledge you are providing with your postings are very helpful. I think I saw you moved from Michigan, how long have you lived there in the area now. And I just have to ask, what do you guys do for a living, as it seems you are doing these videos every day. Your love for the area really comes through, & you allow most of us to see & experience sights we will never see or in some cases like myself see again because of age & distance because of where I live now.

Cabins built so close to the edge.. Wow. The lady artist must have been in excellent physical condition to walk this with supplies to get home. I still cannot wrap my mind around being in this area after dark....no way at all. She had to ford that stream alone? Endure the dangers of wild animals, etc. What a woman. at 20:07 the door had a small lock near the top that could be used to close the door instead of the rock....if it is turned to block the door from opening. Brave lady to live there alone. Would absolutely creep me out. I am shocked at the people who would want to be there alone as she did.

Back when the Avents bought the cabin in the 1920s the area was being significantly logged so I doubt there would be that much vegetation there and the National Park allowed a lot of roads to be reclaimed by nature so I doubt she had to walk a trail with supplies. From what I could read about it they bought it as a summer retreat like many wealthy individuals bought retreats for summer months high in the mountains near Elkmont.

This was an early tourist summer community that existed after The Park was established. Elkmont was a BIG community that was given so many years to do business after Park was established, and only recently was torn down. These were not year round homes or early log cabins, but summer shanty "cabins". There was even a huge two story inn there. Fairyland I think. The inn is not being used, but may still be there. This Park is very different. The Peoples Park. It was stipulated that the Dept of Interior may NEVER charge an intrance fee. MANY homes and farms were there before. But, just think... if the Park had not purchased this land and established the Park...ALL OF THIS LAND WOULD HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED AND RAVAGED FOR THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR. It was saved just in time and offers half a million acres and over 800 miles of trails for ALL OF US to enjoy. The last cabin, IS AN OLD CABIN HOME. BEAUTIFUL!

We just watched Randys video 😵 Now I am a big sceptic on paranormal stuff but after visiting this cabin I don't know. The whole time I felt like we where being watched but never scared. I had perfect lighting on that porch and darkened up completely almost like it was being drained. when I said hello hello I was testing my mic to see if it was draining it. My phone shut down twice and it had to change my gimbal out for another one I keep for a back up. but the crazy thing is when I got home to charge my equipment It was fully charged. I Bleave she is watching over her cabin
