I have got to try this! Originally, I was thinking of taking England as the Holy Roman Empire. Now I know Sicily is a great start, thanks to you. I will take it all the Byzantines, the HRE, France, England, Scotland, Ireland, maybe even Norway & Sweden.

In a recent patch, you can get an event as robert allowing you to put a false pretender on the byzantine throne and take kingdom of epirus from them, you get extra soldiers so it's stupidly easy to do since byzantines are stuck fighting the seljuks.
Honestly been enjoying playing as a manipulator trying to control the east, I have my half brother on the jerusalem throne, alliances with the byzantines france and england and dominance over the tyrhennian sea, next plan is to try and either collapse the HRE to get them out of italy or go into hispania

It's so funny, even though this is clearly gaming it a bit Robert is called "The Fox" because of how cunning he was, so him going from absolute nobody to Emperor of Rome is absolutely based and I love it. I might actually have to try this. Also extra props for restoring Chadhemonds inheritance.

I come with a plausible idea since I thought about it.
Try the Islamic emirates of Sicily. There's a secret option the Sicilians can do that's about rebuilding a certain parliament building after owning stuff in southern Italy and other stuff it can do.
Thing is, clan government aka the Muslims can do this too, meaning you could make a hyprid arabo-sicilian Muslim culture that dominates southern Italy/historical borders of the actual emirate of Sicily at its peak, all of Italy or even more.
Recommend either the emirate of Sicily or tunis as a start. Could even be the beginning of a multi episode series of making a blursed reformed roman empire/roman caliphate under this culture but that's pushing far I know. If you didn't have an idea yet of what to do yet and if you did, here's a free video/videos idea you could do for free!@@Wazlos

I have tried this and I will earn everyone, this run takes too much RNG to do.
Many of the runs don't even start right because the starting perks are not quite right bringing a lot of stress and the starting education being 5 stars is also rare.
Then there is the fact that your nephew can sometimes covet your claims and become a rival once you get the claim for the HRE, he often tries to kill you
You can also end up getting infirm very early like in one of my runs which runs everything, a plague could kill you too.
2/5 attempts of mine had the byzantine emperor discover the scheme and end it.
Only 1/5 of my runs did I get the required Ally numbers to even beat the byzantine emperor, there is a layer of RNG even in that.
Therefore my conclusion is, do not try this if you think this is a good way to start the run, it is a fun gimmick run you can try but it will fail most of the times due to the layers of RNG involved
I will say, rng is a thing to consider but generally it is still pretty possible most of the time. No position is untenable but you should be able to accomplish this even with a character who isn't as good as Robert the fox. I do agree the RNG can be annoying a bit but it is more than possible to do
Of course, SICILY is the best start. That's why it should it should be named sicily in eu5
