I am not a reenactor but a traditional bushcrafter can learn a lot from you as well.
    Good information, thankyou!

It occurs to me that mildew was probably pretty common in a Civil War camp. Maybe the application of a little "aging" (wood stain, fabric dye, whatever) of the material would add to the realistic appearance?
But, if you're really having a problem with mildew, move to eastern Washington.

Good subject for a video. Really enjoy the practical use information. I also applaud you for talking about the water proofing product even though they were not a sponsor. Just more PROOF you are about the best instead of who pays you. Thanks again for the lesson on canvas.

Put your leather gear in large 2.5 Gallon and 5 Gallon bags with silica gel packs and stuffed with white newspaper between events and they should stay mildew free even in New Orlean’s 100% humidity, between events. I like the large silica packs from gun stores, for smaller items you can use the drying packets from some medicine or non-sugar food items.

Thanks for the video. Great suggestions to include. Question, in terms of safety (and of course comfort) what are your views on treating the canvas with insect repellents to keep the mosquito/chiggers away?

It's probably best to treat your self with the insect repellent. I'm not sure treating the canvas would do much. Though, I have seen some people try spraying their tent at events. I sometimes keep a pocket sized spray bottle of the most highly concentrated deet I can get, but that's just what I do. Good question.

How do you clean the "bird presence"? I have a medieval tent

I love the way your question is worded. When it comes to most things canvas, I start gentle and work my way up, especially if it's older. You could end up with a really bright clean spot. I would start by dry brushing any remaining "presence" or using a vacuum then some dish detergent and water applied with a tooth brush. You could then air dry, use a paper or microfiber towel.

Great video! Check out a speedy stitcher. They sell a knock off Version at harbor freight it comes with 2 of the sail needles you showed as well as it’s own waxed thread. It’s very affordable and can sew canvas and leather it’s a fantastic product and is self contained. Theirs a ton of you tube videos on how to use one. Great video as always keep up the great work!

Yes, the speedy stitcher! I totally forgot about that and I even have one in my kit, too. Thank you for sharing that wonderful tip.

I would love to do reenacting, unfortunately I live in Utah and there’s not a massive crowd out here or historical significance to the Civil War, I live close to Fort Douglas which is a Civil War era location with a rich history. I have looked all over but couldn’t find any kind of re-enactmentors of Utah militia or anything. Oh well, I’ll probably head east for collage :)

Where do you get a good quality dog tent? Do you put up bug netting as well?

Wambaugh, White & Co. Makes great shelter halves so that would be first suggestion.

I've never been able to tell the difference between treated and untreated aside from the smell that does go away.
