I was considering building ba GMRS repeater but it looks to be a LOT more work than I expected! I'm a general class ham of 10 years with some hobby electronics background and even I'm intimidated!

We understand your thoughts on this subject. What was awesome about this project was leveraging our Elmer's experience to pull the project together. Take a look at our Deploying a GMRS Repeater video series where we use a repeater from Bridgecom. Our goal with this repeater build was to provide many o the skills and knowledge needed that many clubs have in-house. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for sharing. I see Buy Two Way radios has a video on the Wouxun KG-1000G GMRS Base/Mobile Two Way Radios and making them into a repeater. The radio itself must be pretty popular as it seems to be on backorder. I am looking forward to the next video in this series.

Those radios do make the process very easy. But they're not cheap. And unless you run two antennas you would still need a duplexer. Thanks for watching!

Great video. I was wondering if you can make a video outlining the steps needed to get a GMRS repeater on the air. Not so much “building” a repeater, but rather the things needed to get a repeater on the air. For example, frequency coordination, do I need to to contact the FCC and somehow register the frequencies I want to use, etc. There are no GMRS repeaters where I live, but we do have a very high mountain that oversees the entire valley of my city. I have some capital where I can just purchase a GMRS repeater, have it tuned, and programmed. But I just don’t know how to go about the other things I mentioned. It seems that there are a lot of people out there setting up repeaters, but never mention the frequency coordination ( if any). Is it that easy to just build a repeater or buy one, and set it up? Any information will be appreciated. Thank you. I do have a GMRS license. I would just like to set one up for the area where I live.

Aren’t radios supposed to be part certified for GMRS? This is something I’ve never understood about building GMRS repeaters from other radios

At 4:15 the page says "Scrambler" UT-110 Rolling type scrambler. Are scramblers allowed on GMRS? Or was that for a different application?

These radios are used for Business band mostly. There may be features that are allowed in other applications, but for GMRS, cannot be used. We'll cover programming later in a future episode.

Why do you need a CW ID because it is not required on GMRS.

    • @LCARAHAMRadio

@William Lowry - Not required, but this series is showing a process that could be used for a VHF/UHF repeater as well. Thanks for watching!

Nice video evidence to show that the FCC doesn't actually care about radios being type accepted.
