Picton Road Baths. That takes me back to the early 60’s. If I remember there were two swimming pools, the smaller of the two was warmer than the larger.
I lived on southdale road for 22 years the street facing picton libary! Now living in toxteth but the nostalgia and all the memories coming back watching this video!
Sad to see the state of the high st now. I grew up in south drive and chestnut grove... Great place to grow up as a kid.. So much space. Gypsy field bottom of south drive, now built on. Boss hill to ride your bike down. No traffic.. Only one car in chestnut grove then. High St had FIVE newsagents /sweet shops. Butchers, cousins cake shop, chandler's, two chemist's. Gp, post office, bank. Two large green grocers. Robinson at one end and Roberts at the other. Barbers, swings, mystery across the road. Bombed out houses where tge rose garden is now. Bommy night venue. Had my first drink in the thatch and barred out of the cock n bottle!! Cinema at top of road, library and Picton baths. Wavertree high st was boss. Now scruffy, lifeless. Hicks bakery on high st since mid 1800s..now gone. Scruffy signs scruffy shops takeaways everywhere. Even our lady's church in chestnut grove is now gone. Apartments now. The high st was a self contained village. It had everything..
When I was living in Woolton, in the mid to late 70s, I would alternately use Picton or Smithdown Road to drive to and from the city centre. My first cinema visit was at the Abbey, in late 1975, to watch "The towering inferno". I remember Abbey as you show it in the 1967 picture, and on that night too there was a queue of people outside waiting to get in. Brings back so many memories after all these years.
There was a cinema ( pictures ) opposite Picton clock. The cinema was later turned into the Leo supermarket. I grew up at the back of the Sandown cricket club. Picton high Street was our closest shops. The little high street was great in the 70's it had everything, especially a lot of pubs. A real village within a city
Hi Jeff, I have been following your ròute from the Abbey / Wavertree Clock as I lìstened to you I was aware of csertain points you mentioned along the way, particulary the Freeland area. the building I recall was a lot smaller as I recall. And there was a part of the Lamb pub which was beleived to be the smallest house in England. There have been many changes to the area I recall, In the mid fifties I worked in a laundry ( house) between the bridge and the Magnet which turned into a club ,the laundry I worked in was knowen as the GEM , one of my early school leaving jobs. giving my age away 😊
I learned to swim at Picton Baths back in 1965. Someone stole my short trousers out of the changing room one time and left an extremely dirty and tattered pair in its place. Mum wasn't half mad when I got home.
Jeff, I've learned so much of the history of Liverpool. I know it's only a drop in the bucket of the rich and long history of the city. Still it's an enjoyable listen and view. Today it's gonna be another "Hot August Summer Day" in north Los Angeles...42 Celsius! Keep on with the great posts!
That's 107 degrees. I'd die. 95 was enough. Back to a nice 70 today, with rain 😍 Pleased you enjoyed the vid.

@@Jeff1photo it was 109f in Lancaster, CA 26 miles from my home. Broke the all time record. Only 15 miles from the San Andreas earthquake fault. I'm viewing the video!! Thank you.
Another entertaining video. As you walk under those bridges on Picton Road it is just possible to see the public drinking fountain (to the right from the video viewpoint), one of the first of its kind in England (erected in 1860) - it’s constructed of Aberdeen granite (red) and is slowly being reduced to rubble by the local vandals with the council refusing to do anything to save this (small) piece of local history.
4:14 accommodation for families? How many people could actually fit into that space ? Looks like a tight squeeze for 5 people from the outside. Unless of course it’s a tardis 🤩
Im frm the high street bk in the day i seen madness like andrew kernan gettn shot dead i actuallys seen the bullets hit him and watched him die and also the many other things go on and all the clubs n things u dints see inthe 90s our high street was thee best place to grow up end of

I think the small one was for kids, a bit shallower than the main pool.
Many thanks - lovely video

Towering Inferno was the last film shown at the Abbey.

I own a rental property just opposite Picton clock, although I have not visited Liverpool yet. Nice video.
I worked at the the builders merchants at 13.10 on video. In the 1980s. It was called Wayne builders merchants Ltd..

Honestly it wasn't me.
love it x
TH-cams greatest video
Why does everything look so much nicer in the old pictures ? 😢
Good question

My friends and I frequently walked the entire length of those roads back in the 70s...quite a number of pubs for our pub crawl, happy days!
Cheers 🍻

I didn't know about the fountain, shame that our city leaders don't look after things and even worse people vandalise them for no reason.
High Street ends at Sandown Lane

Yeah I was surprised at that too, and Irish families can be quite large. Imagine being in there with cholera though...
