Is UNC’s 24-25 roster currently better than last year’s? | Cadeau, Davis, Trimble backcourt intact

  • North Carolina is expected to add more pieces to its 2024-25 roster, but what about where things stand today? Is the team in its current form better than it was in 2023-24? The Tar Heels return Elliot Cadeau, RJ Davis, Seth Trimble, Jalen Washington, Jae’lyn Withers, and Zayden High. Do the additions of Ian Jackson, Drake Powell, Cade Tyson, and James Brown offset the losses of Armando Bacot, Cormac Ryan, Harrison Ingram, Paxson Wojcik, and James Okonkwo? The coaching staff stays intact for another and will certainly continue to grow, led by Hubert Davis in his 4th year.

This offense is going to be lethal if Cadeau can bump his 3 point % to at least 30%. Very few defenders will be able to stay in front of him if they have to come out to guard him. It's going to open the offense up so much in my opinion

I REALLY THANK THEY COULD WIN MORE GAMES THAN THEY WON LAST YEAR IT ALL DEPENDS ON HD!!!!! This team is loaded like the team in 2022 the team u guys keep disrespecting. HD lost that team with the way he played them. ITs that simple. This team is very similar. He has to push them hard on the defensive end and push push push the ball. If he play RJ and Cadeau more than 30 min every game early he is going to lose Trimble and Jackson. If he forgets to give Drake and Withers minutes he will also lose them. He really needs to find some time for High also. He has to be very good with time management this year the season depends on it

The question of whether this team is better than last years team is irrelevant. We don’t need to play last year’s team! The question is are they good enough to win the championship against this year‘s competition? You could make a case that the 2016 team was better than 2017 but we all know what happened.

there's potential to be better I think. undoubtedly the back court is going to be better. should be a huge jump for Elliot and Seth. I would expect RJ to be as good as he was last year and then with the addition of in Drake and Cade, I don't see how this isn't the best backcourt in the country. still need to find one or two more pieces in the front Court. someone who is a really good rebounder defensive post player that can push people around . I feel like if we can add one or two pieces there it will be as good. if not, potentially better than last year's team. if we don't add to the front Court, I'm not sure if this team's ceiling could meet last year's. just for that reason alone. I think we need at least one more piece in the post

This team has more depth at 1-3 for sure, but 4-5 is suspect. Let's go through it.
PG 2nd year Elliot will be be at worst as good, but very likely better than freshman Elliot was...so +1 for this year.
SG RJ Davis was an All American last year and while he is unlikely to regress his numbers will likely go down ...similar to how Armando was a better player last year (improved FT%, better Pick and roll, perimeter defense with reduced stats). So SG is a push.
SF This is where things get murky (do we play small ball or do we get another big?) Assuming Ian Jackson or Cade Tyson at the 3. Either will be more dynamic as scorers (Jackson likely SG/SF, Cade SF/small ball 4) Cormac was a better, engaged all around defender than I expected, and brought a fire, leadership and intangibles) I would say this would be slight upgrade this year but not as much as you might think advantage .5 this year
PF ???? Is it Cade Tyson/Drake Powell Small ball , is it J. Withers, Zayden High? Is it an NBA Draft dropout yet to be named? No matter how you slice it none of the current rostered players can match Harrison Ingram's overall utility. He could defend smalls and bigs, shoot 3's and was a great rebounder. The closest all-around talent is probably J. Withers and he doesn't have the motor or the basketball IQ that Harrison possessed. Advantage Last year
Center Jalen Washington (backup small ball J. Withers/ Zayden) I have high hopes for a stronger Jalen, making pick and pop 3's playing through contact at the 5. I think he could have a much more diverse offensive game than Armando. If, and it's a big If, Jalen bulks up in the off-season and puts it together he could be a superior offensive player....Visually he will be more impressive but in terms of efficiency it will be razor thin. Armando was a very efficient player.
Defensively, he could be a better shot blocker ...and that's about it . Jalen is going to get killed on high screen roll. He will either live in drop coverage or pick up fouls on a hard hedge, Hubert won't even let him switch cause it will be a disaster. Armando's defense and rebounding last year is not attainable for Jalen. Armando (outside of Billy Cunningham) is the best rebounder in UNC history. Armando was on the All-ACC defensive team last year. Jalen will win the highlight reel but not match Armando. Advantage Last year.
Bench; The overall bench is definitely deeper and while Hubert is evolving, he has yet to show a propensity for playing many players. That fact tempers the seemingly improved bench's effect on the betterment of the team.
So the long and short of it is this team is not better than last year's team. Unless they get a stud portal player at the 4/5, can make small ball work or get a combination of internal improvement from the Jalens and/ or Zayden High.

  • @jimrobinson1140

Unless they get a big man for rebounding and shot blocking who can spell Washington down there, the answer is no. I like the Tyson pickup and the new guys will be good but Harrison Ingram was a great rebounder and scorer. Ryan was the leader on the team, I don't see who is replacing those two guys - unless Tyson steps up and takes Ryan's spot. We are still suspect at guard with Davis and Cadeau because of their size. It showed up against a number of teams last year.
