1:30 The wreckage of the Arabia was found in 1987 buried in a cornfield in Missouri. It seems that the Missouri River changed course since 1856 and the steamboat was buried in silt.. The site has been excavated and much of the cargo was remarkably well preserved. The Steamboat Arabia Museum in Kansas City has many of the items on display, it's like a time capsule into the pre-Civil War old west. If you're ever in KC I highly suggest you pay a visit.
I'm somewhat surprised there was no attempt to salvage the cargo. Granted the currents were probably fierce, vis was "by Braille", and SCUBA gear was only 100 some years in the future, boats were salvaged much, much earlier than the mid 1800's. Then again, I'm somewhat surprised that pigs don't fly, too.

Old school mercantiles are still common on the modern day frontier of rural America. I've traded campfire wood for chicken feed at my local store and I can find most of the things I need without making the trip all the way to town

You know what might be interesting to hear one of these days? How my version of the Old West compares to yours. See, you're in Arizona, so you have the desert, the O.K. Corral, and the Arizona Rangers as part of your history. I'm in Kansas, so we have Little House on the Prairie, the Benders, and the Daltons as part of ours. I'm curious to know how life in Tombstone or Tucson was different than life in Wichita or Dodge City...or even how your version of 19th Century small towns or farms differs from ours. When I picture the Old West, I picture settlers on the prairie gradually forming small farming communities that hit their heyday during the time of cattle drives, even to the point of becoming bustling cities with bad traffic to this very day, but maybe that's a little different for you. However, I'm sure there were also quite a few similarities. A lot of things you've mentioned in your videos line up with what I've read on signs at Old Cowtown Museum, so I suppose there were some things back then that were just standard. I'm sure maybe someone from California (mining towns) or Oregon (where the famous trail ended) would also have a slightly different spin on things. Another thing I wonder is how far West you have to go before it's officially "the Old West" instead of simply "the 1800's." Are some people sitting in Texas or Utah saying, "Kansas is the Midwest! It doesn't count!" while some people sitting on the East Coast say, "They had cattle drives. It was the Old West alright!"? Sorry for all the questions and comments on the videos lately. I promise I'm not a creep or a troll or anything. It's seriously just for the novel.
Maybe I can do one specifically on the different regions. I mean, I kind of do now when I talk about towns. Out here mining and ranching was more impactful than it would be on the prairie regions. Also, back then the trek west started in Missouri mainly, so that was considered the jumping off point. Many territories that are now the midwest were lumped into the west at the time.

Mining towns and cow towns sound like they definitely had their differences, and of course, there was your video on different styles of houses based on what materials were available in each region. On another note, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that there were cattle drives through the desert areas. I mean, when you look at a map showing the trail routes, that's one thing, but when you actually see pictures of the desert while someone explains, "People did this!" that's when you start to realize, "Wait. This must have been hard. What did the cattle eat?" Then there was that lovely video about adult beverages. I had always assumed that maybe in a larger city, someone could sip a cocktail, but on the frontier, your choices of drink were "take it" or "leave it," but I definitely see I was mistaken. Anyway, thanks again for the videos. They're a great help with research (as well as entertainment), so keep up the good work, and I'll work on trying not to leave so many comments with ludicrous questions.

I was named after the movie Shane. To this day I think that the bar fight scene was the best and most epic of all Western movies. And I love the Gumby action figures in the back! Had those when I was a kid!
If you even happen to be travelling on I-20 East of Atlanta, the small town of Rutledge Ga has a still fully functional Merchantile from around the turn of the 20th century. They still sell a little bit of everything and even have the 2 story tall shelf walls with a sliding ladder to be able to get stuff, these days they sell more hardware and gardening supplies but they also stock grocery items and even sewing supplies, not to mention home canned tomatoes and fresh veggies in season. Don't think they sell eggs though, just about everyone I know in that town has their own flock of chickens, heck some of them even get a little competitive with keeping records of how many eggs their girls lay or how many broods are hatched each season.
Interesting you educate us on stuff we never knew. Ivory is real hard to get and illegal now unless it's old stockpiled ivory. My old corn cob pipe from the 1930's has a beautiful ivory stem.
I've been to the Arabia Steamship museum in Kansas City. They still have a good part of the ship preserved as well as much of the goods they were shipping. It broke up, but was preserved in the river mud. It would be worth an Arizona Ghost Riders field trip to film there.
I wish general stores would still exist :( There was one in a town quite far from me and i remember going when I was little. There was an old man at the counter. I only remember seeing hand made knives, rubber boots, and skillets for sale... there was maybe more but I was young. I got told that it burnt down now though.
My goodness. Certainly seems like a lot of work for some groceries! Reminds me a bit of Drucker's store from Green Acres and some of the negotiating they had to do to get simple items! Haha :)
That one bit from the shakiest gun in the West Don Knotts was such a legend I've been thinking about taking some spare would I have at my shop and making a little cart that I could wheel out till like county fairs and stuff and so old west-themed candies and such ( I still have a valid food handler's license from a previous job)

Is there any information on the branded products that you'd find in these stores? Specifically who was producing these goods and where were shipped from. It's interesting to me that companies invested in shipping to the west.
When ordering from a catalogue, how did people pay? Write out a check for $2.17, sent via post? put money in an envelope with the page ripped from the catalogue, the item circled? paypall?
the ones who truly got rich were the merchants, places like Independence, MO made a killing selling supplies to travelers. the demand was there and they were the only place to get needed supplies, so they had steady business unless they were truly ripping people off
Hey Santee is it possible to do a video on wallets in the Old West if there were wallets in the Old West I doubt they looked anything like the modern day wallets of today.
You can still go to Lincoln, New Mexico and see Murphy store thought it was turned into the County Courthouse in 1880, then Tunsols store that is frozen in time as a working mercantile store. Turn the final store is a preserved Mexican Mercado owned and operated for Mexicans in the area as racism what high at that time and the store remained neutral during the Lincoln County wars. Going to see Lincoln is worth the trip for anybody who loves Western history as a town loves very similar to as it would have looked when Billy the kid abd his boys road the dirt streets.

I found a reproduction of the 1897 Sears & Roebuck Catalog at a bookstore and at the time it was out of my price range.

Is there any information on the branded products that you'd find in these stores? Specifically who was producing these goods and where were shipped from. It's interesting to me that companies invested in shipping to the west.

the ones who truly got rich were the merchants, places like Independence, MO made a killing selling supplies to travelers. the demand was there and they were the only place to get needed supplies, so they had steady business unless they were truly ripping people off

You can still go to Lincoln, New Mexico and see Murphy store thought it was turned into the County Courthouse in 1880, then Tunsols store that is frozen in time as a working mercantile store. Turn the final store is a preserved Mexican Mercado owned and operated for Mexicans in the area as racism what high at that time and the store remained neutral during the Lincoln County wars. Going to see Lincoln is worth the trip for anybody who loves Western history as a town loves very similar to as it would have looked when Billy the kid abd his boys road the dirt streets.
