Troy Aikman and Barry Switzer beefed from college to the NFL, with help from Skip Bayless

- Barry Switzer recruited Troy Aikman to play for him at Oklahoma. He gladly accepted, but after a major injury and an offensive scheme that didn't fit his arm, he headed to UCLA. After getting drafted first overall by the Cowboys and winning a couple Super Bowls with Jimmy Johnson, Jerry Jones decided Dallas needed a new coach. Enter Barry Switzer, who Aikman didn't totally see eye-to-eye with. They won a Super Bowl together, but had major issues the whole time. Thankfully, Skip Bayless was around and wrote a book that chronicled their beef.

And for those of you who caught the Easter egg about Aikman's draft year, congratulations! T.J. Maxx coupon books are being sent to each of your homes.
Its not an easter egg, its a dumbass mistake
lllooolll sb nation got jokes
SB Nation 1999 I see what you did there.
He was drafted in 1989. Not 1999
Nuh uh.
Troy: “We need a real head coach who doesn’t pat everyone on the ass even when everyone’s messing up”
Barry: “Troy’s gay”
LOL
I think part of what may have fueled Aikman’s attitude about Switzer was Jerry’s attitude that anyone could coach the team that he put together. Problems often start at the top.

My dad who grew lived in 90s Dallas told me that the Cowboys could’ve won many more rings with Jimmy Johnson. One of the best coaches in my opinion.
Your dad bought into the Dale Hansen narrative? Any idea how Jimmy would have handled a salary cap or free agency.
Jimmy Johnson was just a flat out winner no matter where he coached
jerruh couldnt stand that the actual COACH might led the team to a superbowl
So was Switzer. Oklahoma had the best win percentage in college football during the 70s and 2nd or 3rd in the 80s thanks to Switzer. He won 3 national titles there, and succeeded in getting the better of several famous contemporaries, including a 12-5 mark against Tom Osborne, 5-3 against Jimmy Johnson, 3-0 against Bobby Bowden, and 1-0 against Joe Paterno, Bo Schembechler, and Woody Hayes.
@@taasfm3460 nah with Jimmy Johnson they would have 5 super bowls
62-7
I wouldn't say that Johnson is a flat-out win or no matter where he coached because he went to Miami and didn't win nothing.
Still can’t get over Aikman and Jay Z looking similar
Huh. Never would've occurred to me, but now that you mention it I can see it

The reason I stopped being a fan of the Cowboys. I remember being in HIGH SCHOOL saying the will be cursed for getting rid of Jimmy...and here we are.
akvalues u and megan both. Dark days after Jimmy left and the team he created went down to injuries.
Change Notcoming AND WHO WAS THE COACH THEN??
They were cursed for what they did to Tom Landry
9:35 Switzer used to be hard on Aikmen when he was in college, by the time they were in the Cowboys, Aikmen thought Switzer "gone soft in his old age".
With all that drama going on, i still wonder how that ‘95 team won the Super Bowl.
I did, too. But talent-wise, there were very few teams close to them, outside of SF and GB. I dare say there's been very few who could match ten overall talent, before or after. There were alot of bad teams in the era, the parity effect from the rule changes hadn't started to take effect, yet. You had alot of owners who were just hoping to make a profit.
NFC East was very weak. It came down to them and Philly. Add to the fact that there were three divisions, it was easier for them to get into the postseason.
Then, there was a little luck. 49ers beat them in the regular season. Outside of the fluke start, 49ers did expose the Cowboys defensively. Well those 49ers lost to the Packers who lost to Dallas early that season. Then comes the SB, and Neil have Brown two picks.
@@bigdinlaca The division structure and schedule didn't matter as much as you think, they were still a top 5 team and at worst were #3 or #4 seed. They walloped Philly and GB. It would've been a toss-up with SF. Aikman actually got injured in that game, earlier in the season. The Niners had their troubles against Dallas and having to play them Dallas for NFL title game would not have been a given. Considering how flat they were against GB, I wouldn't been confident about them winning in Dallas.
I've never figured out how they won that Super Bowl either; they kinda sucked in the game as well.

I want a Michael Jordan and bad boy pistons beef, I wont stop commenting until I get it.

Yes! Thank you guys, now let's go SB nation. The next beef video you post better be Jordan and Isiah/pistons beef.
Michael Jordan vs Jerry Krause
Isaiah vs. Magic too! Surprisingly Magic had some nasty things to say about him in his book
Michael Jordan vs. Vernon Maxwell would also make for some compelling viewing. Maxwell's Rockets went 5-1 against Jordan's first 3-peat Bulls. Maxwell was also athletic enough to guard Jordan AND put him at a rare competitive mental illness disadvantage.
An image-conscious sociopath can't use his usual tricks against a legit psychopath who pulled a gun on someone for taking "his" parking spot at a Luby's Cafeteria.

0:58 "Oklahoma was Pretty Good".
Reeeeeeally.
Yeah they won multiple titles with Switzer
Not quite what I was getting at but good to know!
There's no way that was an accident.
How did Oklahoma do against Miami and Barry Sanders?
Sean Murphy . Oklahoma beat Oklahoma state with jimmy Johnson in the years 1979 - 1983 .
Can you make a video about how terrible Skip is as a human being and sports whatever he thinks he is? I’ve never heard a guy be more wrong about everything then when he’s talking sports.
Uncle Creepy he's no George Zimmerman
Everybody hates skip including cowboys players and fans he got fired from ESPN and from multiple radio shows and the only reason fs1 hasn’t fired his ass is because of uncle shay
Poor Troy got stuck with crap coaches after Johnson.
Food for thought. From 1991-1993, Jimmy Johnson's Cowboys were 36-12 in the regular season, 7-1 in the playoffs, and they won 2 Super Bowls. From 1994-1996, Barry Switzer's Cowboys were 34-14 in the regular season, 5-2 in the playoffs, and they won 1 Super Bowl. The only differences between the two resumes is that Switzer sat out most of his starters in losses in the last game of the 1994 and 1996 regular season. In terms of the playoffs, Switzer's 1994 Cowboys lost to a 49er team that was better than the 49er teams that Johnson's Cowboys defeated in 1992 and 1993. In addition, the 1995 Cowboy's roster consisted of 26 players that never played a down for Jimmy Johnson. This included Hall of Famers Deion Sanders and Larry Allen. If one relies on the documented record, Barry Switzer did an outstanding job coaching the Dallas Cowboys.
Amen.
Proof that Skip has always been a terrible human.
Sean Rector lol sheesh it isn't that serious at all
Yes, it is. So much so that Troy, after all these years, was upset with Fox when they decided to hire Skip. You can find plenty of articles on the web about it. To quote “To say I’m disappointed in the hiring of Skip Bayless would be an enormous understatement". Skip is a terrible human being.
Coding with Background I'm no skip fan truuust me lol but at the end of the day he was just doing his job as much bullshit as it is
Craig Royce his job was to report. All he did was twist facts with alleged rumors in an attempt to make a name for himself.
@@Pheonixttty the difference is he wasn't acting as a journalist. He was writing a book, and he wanted it to sell. He would put anything in it if he thought he would get more attention.. That's always been his shtick. Also his obsession with Aaron Rodgers and his rumors.. I think skip doth protest to much.
Jimmy was an awesome coach no doubt and his iron fisted disciplined approach payed off with 2 super bowl wins. However, Jimmy's hard nosed style couldn't last forever. Barry was much better than people give him credit for. Switzer had to fight several battles shortly after being named head coach of the Dallas Cowboys that included the following;
1. The Texas media hated Switzer from the time he crossed over the Texas line. Dale Hansen, Randy Galloway didn't give him a fair shake. Dale even admitted he was too tough on Barry during his tenure as coach. It almost was as bad as the media toward Trump today.
2. Aikman was still sore with Switzer from his college days and never warmed up to Barry ( nor wanted to).
3. Barry's coaching style was always different from Johnson's. Barry was a "players coach" who excelled at recruiting players in college and encouraging players to make the most of their abilities. He always had his players back and Switzers players in college always loved and respected him. This style of coaching
served him well in college as his 3 college championships prove. when he got to the NFL he stuck with that approach. Not to say he couldn't or wouldn't discipline but yes he wasn't the strict disciplinarian that Jimmy was. Aikman detested this approach but in all honesty It's probably what the cowboy's needed after 3 hard years of grinding. That kind of hard nose coaching has an expiration date.
Also there's no guarantees Jimmy would have one another super bowl.
4. Jerry became more intrusive with the team after Jimmy's departure which was out of Switzer's power to control. Switzer also was limited by Jerry on coaches and assistants Switzer could bring on.
4. Switzer hadn't coached college football in several years when he received the call and had never coached in the NFL.
Despite all these challenges, Switzer managed to Win a superbowl, go to the playoffs most of the time and racked up a winning percentage that exceeds any other Dallas Cowboys coach. Plus he's one of only a few coaches to have won a championship at both the college and pro level. Not bad for a guy who only coached the Cowboys for 4 years and whose supposedly a bad fit for Dallas. Kind of interesting that Switzer is the last coach to bring Dallas a Superbowl and that was almost 25 years ago.
Excellent comment and analysis...
Amen.
Yawn
5:13 Bruh, Troy got MAD. Barry grabbed his ass in college one time to many.
This was way more informative than aikmans football life segment.
Troy Aikman's relationship with Switzer could be a badass movie
Switzer would have won the super bowl in 94 if the 49ers didnt come into that season as stacked as any team in the last 50 years.
He was drafted in 89 not 99
Jerry probably did with Jimmy what he did with TO. Took a pen out during lunch and drew a line down the table and wrote the cowboys and smith on one side and jimmy on the other. For someone who never shutsup he sure needs the visuals to fire someone
Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels?

Skip bayless becoming a household name is a tragedy but I hear skip and his husband are doing great.
Jamel Holloway came and talked to the kids at our local youth football camp when I was in high school and got arrested with weed in his car like two days later. Then he made a speech at our season ending awards banquet that year and got arrested for public intox pretty much as soon as he walked offstage lol
Last year in 2022 TROY AIKMAN walked BARRY SWITZER down the tunnel onto the sideline during the OKLAHOMA SOONERS SPRING GAME ... PRETTY COOL, I THOUGHT I WAS TRIPPIN WHEN I SAW IT.
Any coach could've won a superbowl with that roster.Switzer and Jones road the roster of Jimmy Johnson and when they were all give they started losing
If that’s the case the cowboys would’ve won in 1994. Switzer still was trash.
Sometimes I watch these vids just because they are so well done. I’m not even interested in the title but then watch and love the vids
Jeter vs. Arod Beef during the late 90’s and mid 2000’s is one I gotta see and MLB fans have really understand. Ego, Money, Broken friendship
Please SBNation!!!
Rumors of Troy Aikman's racism were proven untrue countless times. Ask any Cowboys player who was on the team then, and they have nothing but positive comments about Troy. Hell, even at the time, his teammates stood by him all the way. Charles Haley straight up said that if anyone disrespected Troy, he'd take it personally and defend Troy to the end.
Today, Troy Aikman's biggest critics claim he benefited from a talented roster. Ask his teammates about Troy and they'll tell you a different story: that he was the glue who held the roster together. That Cowboys team was always a crack in the ice from completely falling apart at the seams, because every talented player had an ego the size of the sun, but the second Troy stepped in, everyone silenced themselves and listened to him. Troy wasn't just the product of a talented roster; if not for him, the Cowboys aren't a dynasty.
parts of this were from the collapse episode
well if they would pay college quarterbacks you probably wouldn't catch em havin to deal blow lol. (you'll probably catch more of em using it tho ;) )

Jerome brown been whooping that ass for years in college before he came to Philadelphia and smacked Troy as a cowboy. Fly eagles Fly!
They 90s were my brad and butter era for football, being in college and my 20s and watching every televised game for years. Besides my love for my local Bears, Elway's Broncos and The Buffalo Bills were my favorite teams, hence I hated hated hated The Cowboys. But after awhile I couldn't help but respect Troy, dude was a certified pro, tough as hell, and clutch, with great accuracy. He and Emmit also benefited from one of the most dominant o-lines ever assembled. But seeing him take his entire coaching staff apart on the sidelines for not doing their job, that's top notch stuff.
Brad and butter?
@@TL2354 Haha. Bread. But Brad Culpepper and Brad Johnson were pretty good in the 90s too, lol

Interesting factoid... No coach in NFL history won more playoff games in their first 3 seasons than Barry Switzer. From 1994-1996, Switzer won 5 playoff games which is 1 more win than George Seifert from 1989-1991. Switzer also won more playoff games than all of his successors combined. Playoff Totals Chan Gailey 0-2 Dave Campo 0-0 Bill Parcells 0-2 Wade Phillips 1-2 Jason Garrett 2-3.
Aikman was selected in 1989 not “1999”.
Neil O'Donnell MVP of that super bowl
Seriously.....I love these beef stories
SF fan here. I am so happy for the Ego Jerry Jones had. It helped SF. I feared Jerry Jones and his ability to beat the Niners. HAH. it was Jimmy Johnson. So fast forward Jerry punts his head coach to hire Mike M former GBay coach. It an ugly baby but its mine. Yeah I'd rather have more SBowl wins and credit coach than none and be the boss. Failed as Owner failed as GM. EGO KILLS franchises. SF finally figured that out....
I worked at this place in 2007 and before i got there they had a former football player who never made it big but he said he was with Dallas in the 90's and Troy's "boyfriend " would show up on the sidelines looking very gay and apparently either Jimmy Johnson or Barry Switzer confronted Troy and told him don't ever have him at the games again . I didn't believe my friend at the time but this is the first time i have ever heard it in the media before .
1999? That's strange, because I was at Candlestick in 1994 for the NFC Championship game. The Cowboys had a QB named Aikman.
"Do people still say frienemy?" "I don't know...just read the script." "Ok" hahaha
Barry Switzer mismanaged a lot of star power...Ex: Marcus Dupree
Dupree mismanaged himself by being a fat ass lol
RC Colas?! Idk why that's so funny to me. Sounds like such a southern thing when he says it.
Coaching is not for everyone. If you're looking to be liked and make your players happy all the time then you're probably not going to be a good head coach. Switzer wanted to please people-Troy wanted to win and needed Switzer to hold people accountable. Barry couldn't do that.
In 96 and 97 the Cowboys had bottom feeder offenses led by Troy. Both of those seasons they had the number 3 defense in the league. The defense was chalk full of players that loved Barry.
Troy got his way with disciplinarian Chan Gailey as the next HC and turned on him within 2 seasons.
Barry Switzer won championships every level he coached.
@@supersexysega Liked Switzer at Oklahoma. I just thought he was way too loose with the Cowboys. Would've loved to see what Jimmy could have done had he stayed on for a few more years.
It was not switzers fault
He was drafted in 1989 not 1999
A Kobe and Shaq beef episode would be something great lol
As soon as Skip Bayless was mentioned I taped out.
WE LIKE SPORTS AND WE DON'T CARE WHO KNOWS
I can't stand Barry Switzer. Ick. That sideline rant by Aikman was awesome.
Yeah that rant is a direct reflection of Johnson treating his players like babies. Switzer treated his players like the adults they are supposed to be.
2:11 he wasn’t drafted in 1999. It was 1989.
Switzer was a lightweight compared to Jimmy. Aikman was forced to crack the whip and act like a head coach when Switzer was lax.
The only closet homosexual in this story is Skip Bayless.
Make one about Super Bowl 51 & 52
The reason they were good for the years following Jimmy Johnson's retirement and even won the Superbowl was due to the momentum of the great team Jimmy had coached to be great. Barry was a bit of a joke. I mean, wishbone? Please.
I just wanted to let you know that you made a mistake saying in 1999 he was drafted you meant 1989
Grade A
FYI Bayless did not become a household name because of his Aikman Switzer book. He became one when he wrote a book that dared to criticize Tom Landry some years earlier.
That was the thing that put him on the map and made his reputation. And caused many of the Dallas faithful to hate Bayless to this day,
In fact you should research that book of his, it's worthy of a video itself. The book was titled "God's Coach"
7:18 old Peyton and young Eli Manning 😂😂😂
I think you meant to say Troy was drafted in "1989" , not "1999". But, maybe I'm wrong. Probably not though
I wonder if Jerry and Jimmy have any regrets about that beef. Feel like Dallas would have been a force had Jimmy had stayed and both men kept their egos in check
Didn't anyone notice 6:54 when voice over guy gets shut down down by producer.
John Blake never alleged Aikman used a racial slur. You just said that. He alleged Aikman only castigated black players never white ones. As the guys he castigated were the guys he directly worked with no one on the team took it seriously.
If Jerry Jones really wanted the Cowboys to keep winning and didn't care about being in the spotlight, he would've promoted one of the assistants, like when George Seifert took over in San Francisco
Mistake at 2:13
SKIP BAYLESS IS INEVITABLE!
I'm pretty sure Troy was drafted to the NFL before 1999
How can he say he’s a cowboys fan no fan would do this to their favorite team
Aikmem was the truth
Jamel Holloway was a better fit for that offense. Frankly, Holloway was the best option QB i've ever seen. Better then Frazier, Turner Gill, Darian Hagan, Tony Rice, Major Harris, Kordell Stewart, etc. I would compare him to the great running QB's. Charlie Ward, Kyler Murry, Lamar Jackson, etc.
Skip is awesome.
Just thought I’d leave that here.
Do your research before you do videos like this. The 1997 season the Cowboys finished 6-10.
Troy was drafted in1989 not 1999.
Man you confused me when you said Troy was drafted in 1999
going pro in baseball seems like a better bet since its a longer career.
People do still say Frienemy. For the record.
I spat out my juice when I heard skip name
Skip has long been used to start feuds with baseless rumors. He's such a dope, players and coaches know that they can feed him some BS and he'll bite - hook, line and sinker.
LoL, I'm calling shenanigans on the so-called easter egg. it was a gaff and wasn't edited out. No problem we all make mistakes. Don't trust those coupon books lol
All the vintage hat heat
You should do the clippers choking against the rockets..
Troy seems to think he knows everything! I can imagine he would be hard to work with. Great he won three Super Bowls almost 30 years ago. 🤷♂️
When you mock the fact that he won 3 superbowls, a long time ago, your saying that anything anyone has ever accomplished in life is meaningless. What you've done in the past effects your future
So my dad played summer league baseball with Aikman and after he got draft offers he told aikman to take the draft pick instead of going to OU to play football.
Aikman was not drafted in 1999 wtf??
Some errors in this. Doing basic research could have cured it.
