    I've watched a lot of worm videos, and your videos have been the most helpful, economical, and basic straightforward ones I've seen!!! Thank you!!!

    such helpful videos with so many great tips, like here for example how to hurry up the mushy factor on the apple that is past its prime for eating but not yet in its prime for the worms 👍 and showing how and explaining why you distribute the food the way you do, thank you!

    Everyone starts the same with totes/bins then advance from there especially if it works for them and want to continue. One tip I would like give is is to make a bokashi out of worm food using some sort of food processor. I use the big mouth juicer which is 800 watts which is needed to process banana peels, even so still best to cut those into small pieces first. I have used that juicer for many yrs ,,, any less power and you are wasting your time. By making the food a bokashi the bacteria can get the food ready sooner for the worms.

      I have tried the europeon night crawlers but the red wigglers are still the best composting worm. The night crawler will move around and go deep. But the red wiggler will attack the food as a community.

    Man that looks like fresh food. Seems like these worms are eating better than most humans.

    How many worms do you put in one of the 20 gal containers?

    Thats exactly how it is with my ENCs , they prefer compost, cornmeal with eggshells and coffee grounds. I gave them a slice of melon and they didnt like it.

      The reds have already went through this feeding and I have had to give them more. The euros still haven’t processed it all but love the dry food! I added them some extra coffee to but no food scraps.

    Amazing your worms don’t escape from the holes

    • @emilytheriver8722
      @emilytheriver8722 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They aren’t trying to escape that impressive bounty of food! Also, without those holes the worms can’t breathe and the whole process requires a bit of airflow.

    I find that worms will routinely wander up the sides of an enclosed bin due to condensate build-up on the sides.....i.e. They love the wetness and are not necessarily trying to escape or seeking food.

    I’m getting setup to order my ENC from Uncle Jim’s using your affiliate link. I’m planning to make my own worm chow but questionnaires have is can I just feed them that and no food scraps and still get good worm castings to sell and make worm tea with? We just don’t usually have a lot of worm friendly food scraps left, but thought about just buying some bags of salad if need be . Thanks for very informative videos. I’ll have videos on my channel once I get set up. Keep Crushing It!!!

    How many red Wiggler's worms do you think you have in one bin? I just started my first bin and I went big! I got a 64 gallon tote and filled it about 8" full so probably 25 gallons worth of bedding. I put 2000 worms in it and it seemed like nothing! I ordered another 2000 to put in it. My bedding for them is 80% very small cardboard shredded (about the size of a grain of rice), 15% some miracle grow compost, and the last 5% is food scraps, coffee grounds, and rabbit poop. I feel like they take forever to eat the scraps. They're not leaving the bin, but my guess is they're eating the cardboard more than the food scraps. Is this too much cardboard for bedding you think? I mean none are leaving so I guess they're happy, but I also can't tell if they're eating the food scraps really. I'm only 4 days into the bin being started so maybe I'm just expecting to see more than I am seeing lol.

      I have probably around a pound of worms or so in each red bin so around 1500-2000. Usually a good rule of thumb is a pound per square foot of surface area. This type bin is around 1.5 square feet. The surface area is more important then the depth because reds stay in the top few inches to break down material. With your bed only being 4 days old I would say them being slow is normal. It will take them a little while to get acclimated to their new environment and start process food rapidly. As long as your miracle grow compost doesn’t have any chemical fertilizers in it your bedding mix sounds good. They will stay kinda spread out till the majority of the food value in the bedding is gone then they will congregate around the scraps you put in there. Also most scraps will take several days to break down enough for the worms to eat it that is why you want to feed before they are fully out of food. That being said I would give them a week or 2 to settle in then start checking to see if the food scraps are gone. Just like outdoor composting it takes a little time to get going but once the microbes and worm population get going it is very satisfying and amazing to see how fast they turn your waste into garden gold. Thanks for watching our video!

      @@robinettefamilyfarm3510 thanks so much for the reply! I actually added 2000 more worms to my first bin and started a second bin with 4000 worms. Wow it's a whole new ball game! These dudes are eating! I put about 3/4 pound of food scraps in each bin and 2 days later it was 95% gone! I added a little over a pound of food scraps in each bin today and I'll check on it in 2 days to see if that's all gone as well. This is so much fun lol.

    Great info!! Thank you for sharing.
    One question. Did you make the dry worm food yourself? If so, was it the same recipe from your video you posted a few years back?

    • @robinettefamilyfarm3510
      @robinettefamilyfarm3510  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is the same recipe. The only difference is I used unbleached flour instead of whole wheat flour in this batch because that is all I could find at the time. The main thing is to make sure the ingredients don’t have any chemical additives in it.
