you can play quieter without the airiness, it depends on if your mouth piece is opened or closed. with closed mouthpieces you don't need much air for good tone so it's really good for beginners, but with open mouthpieces you need strong consistent air through the instrument and a steady embouchre. I'm telling you this as a bass clarinetist.
I hate advice like this. (No hate ofc, just avoid it in the future). Even though you are right, it's just not helpful, and it's not why he sounds airy. Telling a beginner that it's their mouthpiece's fault is like telling a toddler that just learned to walk that they can't run fast because of their shoes.
@@pinecow im explaining the difference between open and closed mouthpieces, not blaming the mouthpiece, im giving advice that i myself received when switched to bass clarinet

One of the clarinet players transitioned to bass clarinet, so it was weird not seeing her with the clarinets but up near the brass section. Btw I play flute if anyone was wondering.
Dear Mr.Bass Clarinet, As a Saxophonist Myself I would recommend getting a 3-3.5 reed.and if you already do try blowing with a bit more air Dare Mrs.Clarinet, You did fine 👍 PRACTICE

So I've played the bass clarinet for 8 years and at a competition a judge came on stage and told me he wanted me to play as loud as the tuba player and i actually managed it. But i will say this was AFTER i self taught myself to play the Baritone Saxophone which requires A LOT more air. After playing the Bari now for three years for Jazz Band. (marching with it for two) i am A LOT better at the Bass Clarinet and can be A LOT louder. It just takes work. (But another thing is Bass Clarinets just don't really project...well when marching which i did march with one for two years but on stage you should be fine. I’ve been playing the clarinet for six year here’s so tips of you want them. It’s really good but if you want it to sound better you gotta tounge the notes make them clean and sharp. For the Airy noise check your embouchure which is the shape your lips are in to control the amount of air and check your reed. Hope this helps!! Amazing job!!
I play the sax but recommendation: Use more air for a more clear sound, whem you dont it sounds "airy" and you could barelt hear it when the clarinet was plating. More and just tighten the corners and its a whole lot better🤙

He seems to play a little quiet maybe bring out the back he's the foundation have him play a little louder but not where he's louder than the melody of the girl on the clarinet.
To those saying he needs more air… no. What he needs is probably a softer reed, maybe even a different cut, maybe more mouthpiece in the mouth, probably a softer embouchure. Playing with more air just creates squeaking when the improper equipment or technique is used. Not saying more air won’t benefit at all, but that’ll only get you so far
