You accounted for yourself very well, my friend. You can see Mike enjoyed listening as well as playing. Nice contrast in how you each approached the music as well.
I can dig it, just following him is epic. Btw, there's an audio clip of you playing Giant Steps up here on TH-cam, you're just completely crushing it, one of my favorite solos on that tune ever...
Hey. It's late here in TX. I just want to tell you how incredibly inspiring this performance is. Just terrific playing from everyone. And the banter at the end between you and Michael is everything.
you both sounded so wonderful here, I actually found this clip originally listening to recordings of you. The contrast in approaches is beautiful, the band really seems energized here. David's comping is incredible during the solos. Love the rubber Link sound, always will.
Seamus' solo is stunning. Think about it. He was 29 or less, and played right after MB, which at that time was the most established and imitated mainstream tenor jazz player. Quite a challenge, isn't it? Even more for an unknown emerging tenor, like Seamus at that time. After a typical muscular and "aggressive" MB solo Seamus is able to create a totally different atmosphere, starting with thin simple ideas eventually elaborating and developing them with total mastery and style. What a musician!
29 is actually old for a jazz player. Mike Brecker was 21 when he joined Dreams with Randy and Billy Cobham, Randy Brecker had already recorded his record "Score", and Charlie Parker was in his early 20's, Miles joined Bird when his 21. I know Seamus, and he's one of the most incredible saxophonists of the modern era, his long practice hours, similar to Mike who practiced 11-15 hours a day, is the path which gave Seamus the skills to play after Mike's solo. It takes courage to play after Mike Brecker, and he's clearly up to the task. I knew Mike Brecker also, and his power and confidence here, playing through a tune it seems like he is learning the sub changes written in on the spot, is nothing short of amazing. 5 stars for Seamus and Michael.
I've watched this one a bunch of times, never ceases to delight and amaze me. All the musicians play so beautifully. Wonderful tribute to Charles Mingus and the musicians that worked with him on the famous recording of this tune...
i've been a lifelong brecker fan, maybe i don't "know" enough to say who kills what, but it's like the sorrow for mr. porkpie hat's loss bleeds through, right when both tenors are wailing near the end. this is my "semi-official" intro to seamus blake, viva both tenormen!!!
Seamus It's truly a super talented and gifted saxophonist and musician. I think Brecker recognize that. Blake is an extraordinary saxophone player He had nothing to worry about. He's outstanding this sort of reminds me of the boxing game. Your talented upcoming fighter and you meet your idol. And you know what you have to do. And you do it.
Two of my favorite things, Brecker and Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, I NEVER knew the two things happened at once before. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS. Thanks so much for sharing
Rithvik Somayaji if you’ve never heard Michael on Goodbye Pork Pie Hat with Joni Mitchell and Jaco Pastorius, go listen to that right now. Actually listen to all of Shadows and Light, it’s a masterpiece of an album.
oh, i'm so happy to be able to hear/see Seamus Blake on TH-cam! I'm really sorry I missed you playing here in Victoria the other night with Joel Haynes. You've always been one of my superheroes. Thanks for sharing your music. You sound fantastic. Channeling the universe. I wish you all the best. -Brooke
That. Was. Amazing. This video appeared a couple of times in my recommended videos but I have never watched the entire thing. Glad I did it now. What a solo, mr. Blake! Thank you!
laughingtiger123 yeah I’m sure Brecker was not very judgmental which is what made him such an incredible musician. Being open to new things and new cats
Mike was basically a pretty shy guy, and opened up as he matured. He was always a gentleman, but kept a low profile. Studied with Bob for a year, and he was complete salt-of-the-earth. Missing both tremendously.
This is a great example of how to follow a soloist that just completely destroys the audience with an amazing solo. Be yourself and do your thing...best approach. Love the overall vibe and pacing of the band performance.
Wow-- catfighting aside, this is a great video. Seamus plays perfectly with Michael-- instead of trying of follow Brecker by pretending to be Brecker, he follows Brecker with his own approach and vibe, very authentically and beautifully. Really good job, man, and great music. Two jazz saxophone geniuses.
While the video angles and abrupt ending to this video is not good, any video containing the masterful tenor playing of Michael Brecker is a good video for me.
I gotta say I saw this video for the first time years ago and I thought at the time that Seamus Blake played by far the more meaningful solo, his playing is mature far beyond his years. Hearing it again today confirms my original thoughts. IMNSHO I think Seamus Blake comes away with the honours on this one and WTF is it with the piano player's head. Why do guys figure it's necessary do that when they play? Bird never jumped all over the place?? It's interesting the guy who had the most to say ( SB ) just stood there and made a definitive statement. Great tenor playing Mr Blake... You sure showed them..
oh... seamus great great great great solo...! and brecker too, of course! but seamus is killin. what a personal concept of sound phrasing and articulation... yeah
man im really diggin ur ideas! i used to play an otto link, i couldnt get a decent sound out of it so i switched to jody jazz hard rubber but man can you blow! you really got the rhythm section to go along with you for that solo. great playing man.
Thanks A Dog TM for the info. I must catch Sean Blake when he is next in the UK or Europe. Heard him last week on a Smalls podcast and he was outstanding.
*@ zimk mr.* Are you sure dude ??? I've watched, and kept listening to this moment (around 4:16) over and over again and... My suggestion would be: Get your hearing checked by some kind of specialist or, simply clean up your ears. Will yaaa !!! "Brecker completely misses the chord" - Are you fucking kidding me ???
Effing amazing...thank you for posting! BTW, were they in a parking lot or something? What's with the car in the background and the people milling about? wtf
Jörn Kleinbrahm late comment, but this looks like the Mingus Big Band. Seamus did a good amount of work with them on their earlier albums like Live in Time and Tonight at Noon but he mainly works with his own groups at the current moment I think.
what are yo utrying to say about the giant steps recording with brecker and mintzer brecker fucking kills it mintzer does well but i mean brecker is the better sax player
yeah i was shakin in my boots!
one of my biggest idols since i was a kid.
this was live in japan at the madarao jazz fest 99

Michael was the ultimate cadenza master!

couldn't have said it better...I got goosebumps while listening to this!
Stunning is an understatement. Seamus plays that horn like a true soul man!

Marshall McDonald Miles actually joined when he was younger, when he was 19 in 1945.
Better yet......I'm too old to remember details now.. :)
this planet we live on makes zero sense. this vid has 35k hits yet some hot Korean chick barely playing classical saxophone has 700k hits.
and Billie Eilish has billion views Lol
Wow man.. I never knew he performed with the Mingus Band... Crazy... It's nice to get to hear you two together. Killin..
Brilliant cadenza! Always loved Seamus's tone and concept too.
I love Seamus' reference to the original recording on Ah Um, with the fluttertonguing just like John Handy did.
Two modern kings of solo development

yeas. michael brecker. always killing it. love the arpeggiated intro.

That was great Seamus. Always getting new and great things from you man.
How do you follow Brecker at that age and craft a solo so masterfully? This is insane..
Wow, the way Seamus built his solo was awesome. It was perfect coming in right after Michael Brecker burrrnnneeed
Major major kudos to Seamus. To stand up there AFTER a Brecker solo and play with him staring at you. Wow. Not easy. Very well done.
oh, i'm so happy to be able to hear/see Seamus Blake on TH-cam! I'm really sorry I missed you playing here in Victoria the other night with Joel Haynes. You've always been one of my superheroes. That altissimo line at 7:51>>>>>>>>>>>> absolutely epic
There's a guy recording off to the side with a professional camera. I wonder where that footage ended up
Seamus Blake--my favorite living jazz tenor saxophonist.
so beautiful , to the tears , that's where they bring me each time .
Way to hang in there with the gentle giant. Michael was so darned intimidating. So was Berg.
laughingtiger123 yeah I’m sure Brecker was not very judgmental which is what made him such an incredible musician. Being open to new things and new cats

love how he starts pork pie with his naima intro.
As a hugeeeeeeeeeeeeee Brecker fan, I gotta say I was really moved by Seamus’ solo here.
Amazing document, thank you so much for sharing it!

What Bigband is that? Was Seamus a constant member?
Jörn Kleinbrahm late comment, but this looks like the Mingus Big Band. Seamus did a good amount of work with them on their earlier albums like Live in Time and Tonight at Noon but he mainly works with his own groups at the current moment I think.
Who are you?
