My daughter had the great fortune of experiencing Mr. Schwengel's Kindergarten first hand. An amazing experience, and one she (and her family) will always cherish. Mr. Schwengel brings a unique creativity and boatloads of fun to learning that is very rare indeed.
Kurt is one of the best teachers I have ever observed. He is all that is GOOD about education. I hope tons of people watch this talk. Better yet, stop by his classroom. You can't miss it: it's the one with color, laughter and joy. Great job, Kurt, and thanks for choosing to teach. ;-)
Great job! i have 3 year old twin boys that i wanted to home school because i felt so stongly that how schools teach has seemed to stray in a direction i dont agree with. After seeing your passion and love for what you do, i now see we need to take back kindergarten instead of avoiding the problem. Thank you.
After experiencing a horrible week in an "academic" preschool, we deliberately chose one that has a nature/play focus. Our son loves it and thus has learned much more than I think he ever would have in the other place.
Kurt - Your talk was fantastic. I mean it (and I go to talks for a living). Our whole family enjoyed it and Alexander kept pointing out what he remembered from your class. --Sonja
Dear Kurt, I teach Kindergarten in Beverly Hills and my colleague and I would love to come visit your exciting classroom! Your June field trip to the beach looked like so much fun! We have a lot of fun in our classrooms but there is always room for more :) You are an amazing teacher! Sincerely, Joyce Medway
You've got me, Kurt, and the 10,000 teachers who like my page and are passionately interested in Kindergarten. I have a deeply German last name too. Occupy Kindergarten! love, Miss Bindergarten
You sir are brilliant. I wonder if you've ever heard storyteller Donald Davis' stories of his favorite teachers? I think you'd like the one where they learned math, reading, geography, etc. all through story and play--a year-long quest to plan and provision a trip to a foreign land.
When i was a Kindergarten - child i could: - stay outside until dark without my parents knowing where i was - get my first sharp knife [called Fahrtenmesser in german] to carve sticks [or cut into my fingers - called "slicing away clumsy flesh" by my grandparents] - i was allowed to sled down steep icy hills with an barbwire fence at the end of it - become an own personality through "trial and error" - eat worms without anybody saying: eeeh yuck - sleep in a bed coated with lead - containing paint - and survive ...and i´m 50 years old now - and still alive and mostly healthy.

If more teachers were like Kurt, I feel we would have a very different world. Time to change ALL of education, starting with Kurt!

I am also a Kindergarten teacher and I chose to be. I feel like it is the most important grade and is the foundation for all education.

Well done, Kurt! But hey, come on, Exxon? It's the politicians and bureaucrats that allow Exxon to have any influence at all.
I teach pre-k. The expectations are more or less the same as K except my students are a year younger.
