    It's a pretty successful design goal when a single class in PF2 gives you more Avatar-y experience than the actual Avatar RPG 😅

      To be fair to it the rpg plays into the message and theme of the show very well even if they don’t lean on the bending nearly enough.
      I mean the “Iroh”/“Tenzin” “class” is fucking awesome. Great mentor style character playbook.

      That probably might be a better fit for him! Anyway, my initial draft had Azula using Burning Jets to get away, and I wanted a chance to explain that it doesn't provoke reactions. I think I missed an opportunity during her escape there unfortunately, will add to my pinned comment.
      EDIT: It does happen earlier on, at 10:33! But I failed to mention it

      My first thought was Inventor, given his technological knowedge but yet again the inventor class is kind of limited in the sense that Sokka doesn't really have a single 'thing'. He just makes stuff in general. Man I hope Inventor gets some more support for those kinda characters.

    It is not exactly a house rule to give a Blind Character an advantage akin to precise sight. As outlined in the GMG, a character with disabilities should recieve a means to not be completely disabled by their disability, which a normal character would. It is normally recommended to give a Blind character Blind Sight for free in addition to making the character immune to visual effects, but a buffed Tremorsense is also a reasonable accommodation for a Blind character, which the Blinded condition simply is not adequate enough for a meaningful, fun play time.

    This demonstration just made me realize...
    Kineticist is basically a spell-like swashbuckler, using (Tumble Through/Channel Element) to enter their (Panache/Elemental Aura) for lasting benefits, and then spending (Panache/Elemental Aura) to use big (Finishers/Overflows)

    I think the familiarity with the source material really helped on this combat demostration. I'm kind of surprised a level 11 character can go toe to toe with four level 8 characters and a level 7 character (yeah, Azula had some advatange as not all party members appeared on the battle at the same time).

      Still, it's cool how PF2's encounter balancing system works! If we subtract Sokka (sorry Sokka fans!), then this would have been a Severe encounter (120xp) HAD everyone been there from the beginning. On paper it became almost an even fight, and although this was scripted the overall impression is fairly representative of how this would've played out.

    ADDITIONS/CLARIFICATIONS:
    -At 6:30, the 10' aura didn't extend to Aang and so weakness 5 to fire shouldn't have triggered
    -At 10:33, I fail to mention that the fire kineticist's Burning Jet ability doesn't trigger reactions! So that's why Sokka could not use his Attack of Opportunity.
    -For you hawk-eyed viewers, Foundry is adding STR and DEX to the kineticists' attack rolls. I recorded this before Foundry was updated with the Kineticist; here I'm using the playtest version of the Kineticist which relied on STR and DEX for attacks, and brute-forcing Foundry to give the numbers I needed!
    -At 23:04, Aang would've been better off using his Four Winds ability to get everyone to scatter!
    -Some hawk-eyed viewers notice that Foundry displays the characters adding Strength or Dexterity to their attack rolls... I am using the playtest Kineticist which is currently playable on Foundry VTT (it used STR and DEX for attack rolls). The final version of the Kineticist, which uses Constitution, isn't out yet. I'm not a programmer, so I brute-forced the correct bonuses with potency runes and ability scores.
    -Yes there's dirt on my shirt and it sucks. I made sure to get a thousand details right but didn't get this one. It's frustrating lol.

      10:40 Does Burning Jet prevent Attack of Opportunity? If not, Sokka could have tried to get a Hit in.

      @@schroedingerscat5405 It does, yes. Movement from Burning Jet specifically ignores difficult terrain and does not trigger reactions.

    Weapon infusion feels so very top tier for Kineticist's 1st level feat.
    Didn't realize it could augment damage types so you could have piercing or slashing water!

    A great demonstration of the new class, and a great homage to Avatar as a whole. I loved that bit near the end where she surrenders, only to force an initiative roll again via Deception to escape. I'll have to remember that for my next campaign's more notable villains.

    There's a feat that allows tp change the damage type. While for fire, it can only be changed to cold damage, I guess for ATLA, it could be resonable to allow electric damage.

    Great video sir, I loved the use of music, graphics and sound effects. Really showcases how well designed the class is (both in terms of exciting action dynamics AND the wide range of possible character options).
    Also, it's very clear that you are a big Avatar fan, your Azula impression/dialogue was spot on :D You should definitely play the Avatar:Legends game if you ever get a chance, I think you'd really dig it.

    Weapon infusion really is good. Makes fire way less risky to go heavy into.

      Alternatively, you can take versatile blasts for cold damage. I assume it's pretty rare for enemies to resist cold and fire (and not also physical). But agile, crazy range and thrown are pretty good.

Metal already deals piercing and slashing, so its users don't get much from Weapon, but Versatile gives electricity. Meanwhile Wood's Versatile type is poison, which is pretty awful, and it already gets bludgeoning and vitality, so there's a decent argument to not taking either

      @@amiablereaper electricity is rarely useful, but agile, an extra 70 ft of range, and thrown are all really good. You probably shouldn't be blasting twice unless you're quickened though, so I suppose agile isn't great.

    Honestly at this point in the series making Sokka a level lower feels warranted. By the end of the show he can definitely go toe to toe with some skilled benders but here he wouldn't even have been trained with a longsword...

    I hope we get void kineticists at some point. I think adding it as an extra element would probably mess with the class fantasy of being the master of all elements because you couldnt open every gate even if you were level 20, so maybe a chaokineticist class archetype would be cool?

      While I liked the effects of Void and Aether, I don't think that they fit well in the 6-element system. I think that all of the elements being things that you can experience in the world is good and it provides plenty of choice.

      Since it's the void element in feng shui.

      I was thinking something similar to this, void and vitality class archetype for kineticist, overwriting all 6 elements with only light and dark. Still maintaining the option of single or dual gate. Maybe when you "fork the path" you can chose to then open a normal element gate? It would probably need a bunch of exclusive impulses to even work, I think. Light/Dark eco from Jak 2 and 3 vibes. I'll admit it's a bit silly to think about before the class is even out.

    Good lord its crazy how action economy isnt as big as an advantage.
    A lvl 11 character almost wiped 4 lvl 8 (and a 7) players!
    seems these guys are really OP but i just realized there was no tripping status effects.

    I think (at this point in the story) it was fair to set sokkas level lower than that of the rest.

    As a fan of both avatar and PF2-I enjoyed this! Great demo of the awesome system mechanics that went into the kineticist class. Rage/hunted prey should offer free actions upon use as well!

    I find only one problem with this combat. The only person who uses a boomerang is Aang rather than Sokka. Sokka is boomerang guy! ;)

    What's the mod you're using for the initiative banners at the top? I use Combat Carosel and it's a little finicky.
    EDIT: Also, what mod for those elemental token effects, I want to knooooooooow

      TokenMagic for the token effects. They weren't applied automatically; I manually applied them.
      Combat Carousel is retired and is not slated to work with v11. Carousel Combat Tracker is its spiritual successor!

    Avatar is Dual Class Kinetisist + Monk.
    I m talking both "how you might play them" and "how you might portray the Avatar".
    If anyone want to hb they may even make it Avatar State stance => you start using the dual class version of his character list. (May be that stance even can overlap any over stances, if you want to use some monk stances)

    This was such a great combat demo! I hope you'll share a video on the builds for the different avatar characters, so we can see how they were made. Are there rules for being a blood bender for the Kineticist, or would Katara need to take an archetype or something?

    I know the obvious link to kineticist is Avatar, but I could see using this class to make a Naruto or HxH inspired character as well.

      Literally, any elemental-kinesis using Aristotle, Chinese, or Japanese elements can be represented, yeah. You could probably manage a decent Esdeath if you go hard enough Water element.

    When aang was attacked as he was +15 over the ground. That shouldnt be in the 10' aura right? So np weakness to that attack.
    3d grid combat gives me headaches 😂

      For clarification: +15 means his lowest point is 15' above ground (lets just say his feet for spimplicity) while the aura emanates from the 5' cube closest to the ground i would guess. This means the aura should end 15' over the ground.
      So if he was right over azula, he wouldnt be in the aura, and he was also at a diagonal

    One question: can anybody explain what happens with Azula's last turn? I don't understand why is that the other characters are flat-footed all of a sudden... if she rolled Deception for initiative, isn't the flat-footed condition granted only on the first round of combat? I'm assuming she's using the Surprise Attack rogue class feature granted by Rogue Dedication...

      If I had to justify it, she surrendered, 'ending' the fight, and immediately started another to get a Surprise Attack. It sort of works, but it's playing fast and loose to get the dramatic cheap shot and escape featured in the series. Easy enough to handwave with one combatant, would be far more of a cheap GM call if Azula had allies, I think.

      Against each other's AoEs! They have great Fortitude and (later on) Reflex saves, which is what Kineticists usually target. So this wasn't exactly representative. BUT they aren't weak on defense, either! They fill plenty of roles.

    How does Azula's fire vulnerability aura interact with fire resistance? Do you calculate both and take the sum?

      Technically, you first add the Weakness to the damage and then subtract the Resistance from the damage. So in 99% of cases, yes, you can effectively just use their sum. Though there are some weird exceptions (like the Tempest Oracle's electricity weakness)

    Kineticists seem like a pretty complex class. I feel like this is going to be a class that new players bounce off of. Gonna have to temper expectations with this class on new players.

    16:46 why would the fighter take the extra fire damage? The Aura went out with the overdrive didn’t it?

      My reading is that overflow takes effect after the Impulse resolves. One could argue that you can only do the Impulse BECAUSE your aura is active. One could alternatively say the aura disappears BECAUSE you've expended the energy, then the Impulse's effects resolve. I find it hard to think of Azula's aura instantly popping out before the explosion hits them.
      I think the text isn't 100% clear, but I think most people will intuitively run it so that the aura still affects the Impulse's effect before disappearing.

      @@TheRulesLawyerRPG This is my reading as well, but the actual wording is ambiguous IMO. "When you use an impulse that has the overflow trait, your kinetic aura deactivates until you revitalize it."
      It doesn't say *when* that effect actually resolves...is "use" at the beginning or end of the effect? I always read "use" as the whole thing, so all effects of the ability are part of the "use," but I could see someone interpreting it as the beginning.

    It looks like the elemental blasts in your Foundry setup are using STR or DEX for their attack rolls rather than CON, but Impulse attack rolls should use CON, right? According to "Impulse Attacks and DCs" on page 16.

      I have the data from the Kineticist playtest in Foundry, which was still based on STR and DEX
      I'm not a programmer, so I brute-forced Foundry to give me the appropriate bonuses by manipulating potency runes and ability scores

      @@TheRulesLawyerRPG I had the same basic issue with my (very incomplete) version of kineticist for Foundry. I ended up making the impulses as cantrips, then giving my character innate spellcasting with Con as key attribute. This seems to have worked, although the even level scaling stuff can't be automated yet (or at least I couldn't figure it out).

    Question, wouldn’t Solar Detonation be considered a level 10 impulse since it scales every two levels? And if so would Azula benefit from the incapacitation trait being only level 11? Even if it was still a level 8 impulse she would have to be level 16 for her to gain on step higher on her check right? Or am I missing something?

      It is considered a Level 11 effect when done by Azula (it isn't measured by Rank). The rule leveled effects liketraps/items in the current rules is that Incapacitation kicks in IF the target is higher level than it. So I don't think it kicks in.

      ​@@TheRulesLawyerRPG I thought so. I was confused since I thought Azula crit succeeded on her solar detonation because of incapacitation but upon further review it was because she had Kinetic Quickness so that's where I was wrong.
      I also didn't know that the incapacitation trait works differently on other effects than it does spells (I'm new here) so it will mean those impulses are less effective than I thought. Which is fair I guess.

    My only big disappointment here is that the ability scores are never going to make sense for any of the avatar characters. No one on team Avatar is maxing Con, not sure any of them are even boosting strength, much less have it as a secondary. Still, if you can ignore those bits, you can make some really cool kineticists.

      I sort of disagree with this. None of the benders in Avatar are weak in endurance, and both breathing and exercise are vital to being able to bend. And they all take hits that would kill most people. It's mostly talked about with fire specifically, but all benders seem to be physically fit, from airbenders being able to do constant acrobatics to waterbenders and their swimming to earthbenders and their physical strength to firebenders and their powerful breath.
      They may have other focuses, sure, but I don't think I recall a single bender in Avatar that had something I'd consider a "weak constitution" by any means.

      and this is where the change from the Burn mechanic rears its head from old PF1e, when using your super cool kineticist magic applied nonlethal damage in the flavor of physically exhausting your character. Your pf1e kineticist was only as good as their physical conditioning because their entire kit was based around being exhausted and removing that exhaustion.

Anyone who could fight in Avatar could take hits that would instantly turn a human body into gelatin instantly. That's just how action shows work.

      That ability she used (Solar Detonation) costs 3 actions to use, meaning it took her whole turn. It also has the Overflow trait, meaning it exhausted her aura and she'll have to take another action later to reactivate her aura before she can do any more impulses.
      So really, she can do it every other turn, and can't do anything else on the turns she uses it. Take note that at higher levels, a Kineticist becomes able to reactivate their aura as a free action, meaning she would be able to use this every turn (And even move/Blast if she was also quickened), however consider that by that point in the game casters are also using spells that apply much more than just damage

      Initiative is rolled when combat starts. Because she deceived the party successfully into believing she surrendered, combat stops but she did not intend to surrender and so attacks again and a new combat starts and because she opened it by deceiving them gets to use deception in place of perception for initiative. The Rogue Archetype has nothing to do with it mechanically it was just him pointing out Azula's less-than-honest personality. Unless the rogue archetype is what did the off-guard bit, which is possible, it is also possible that was GM fiat, I'm not familiar with the remastered content.

      @@onecat1598 Yes. The players decide off screen to go with it, tell the gm they all agree to not pursue the surrendering NPC, and on that trigger, the GM begins the new combat.

      @@onecat1598 Well, that part is up to a GM but it's perfectly reasonable to do yes. I would say if you end it actually diplomatically, via diplomacy to negotiate a truce or surrender, probably not. If you lie about it and they believe your lie, yes absolutely. This is where the charisma skill you're rolling to do a thing also shows your character's intent.
      False surrenders are a huge part of both real life and fiction and that is how you would best play one out within PF2e.

      @@hikaratu Actually, it is important mechanically because characters by default are not off-guard when a combat starts. Because of the Rogue Archetype's Surprise Attack ability, she gets to treat anyone who hasn't acted yet as off-guard to her.

    Don't kinetic blasts use an impulse attack roll, which uses con rather than dex or str? I thought I remembered reading that somewhere

      They use Con for attack. IF it's a 2-action elemental blast it adds Con mod to damage. IF it's a melee blast (or thrown from weapon infusion) it adds Str mod to damage. If it's a 2-action melee blast it's adding both Con and Str mods to damage.

      Korra would be water/earth/fire. Start with Water and Fire, add Earth, advance Fire. Learn Air and Metal in the correct order during play.

      I think that's only for creatures with the fire trait or that are literally made of fire. PCs usually don't have the trait of their element afaik.
