I came across Fela by chance at Glastonbury mid 1980s. I hadn't heard any African music up till then. I was stood at the top of the hill overlooking the main stage (the original market, for those old enough to remember) when I became aware of this magnetic, hypnotic thing drawing me like a moth to the flame towards the main stage. It was almost a physical thing, like an incessant heartbeat, urging me forward. There on the stage under the pyramid, stood a horn section from the gods, the best drummer in the world, dancers that moved like big cats and a force of nature out in front. A hurricane of a man. I was blown away. Quite simply the best gig I've ever been to. And this song is my favourite of his. It's an absolute stonker. Thank you Fela for enriching my life.
My skin is fair, my eyes are green, my hair is as straight as a pin, my momma never taught me how to dance But when I hear good music it hits me right in my soul and travels from my heart all through my body I don't quite know what to do with myself but I do know it's a blessing to be able to give and receive love in it's universal language of music
You won't appreciate this man if you did not watch this man live while he played music. He ate, drank, slept music all his life. I still remember vividly being in his night club one Sunday jump while he did this tune. Boy there is wisdom in growing old. At least we sabi ad things dey waka.
I like the Newen Afrobeat version as well. Their drummer plays much louder than Tony Allen, so it gives it more of a rock feel. Both versions great in their different ways.
Listening to the way the musical instruments is being used all together and giving it beautiful sounds, it's just so overwhelming and his lyrics are bomb. This baba is a Genius
Every cover you see of this on You Tube and there are a few, in each one, the drummer is off just a hair, or not as groovy and right in that pocket, and that's cause no one, but no one, is or can ever be as masterful as the genius that is Tony Allen.
@@squeakeththewheel No disrespect to Sheun, but his band is nowhere near his Fela's band at any incarnation, even after Allen left and Mr. Lemi was gone with the abrasive album art. Black Voices is a good effort by him, but the two were made for each other.

this is the one and only WORLD MUSIC on earth : Afro-beat term is somehow narrowing its significance and power. This is something "above and beyond" anything: time, races, melody, religion, political borders, slavery, ideologies....Fela is upthere in Heaven and is blessing us every single day, yesterday, today and ..tomorrow. I can't believe how could I have missed him all my life until a week ago, such a beauty for ears, heart and soul !
Fela is so godamm hip.....although frankly when the same song was being channelled mystically through his son Seun during the re-make..., Newan did their version...it came out just as good if not better with Cheick Tidiane and some of Fela's old-timers sitting in with the Newan musicians.
I've seen Fela's sons Seun and Femi perform, and dig Newen Afrobeat's version of this song (on which Seun sings), but nothing compares to Fela himself; I was lucky to see him perform 3 times. What an amazing magnetic performer and visionary. ...Hard to pick a favorite Fela song, but if it's not "Water Get No Enemy", "Opposite People" may be it.
This is what Fela sounded like before the Nigerian Government beat the sh*t out of him, Explosive Fela, dynamite Fela, Unsuppressable Fela, Basket Mouth at his best. Long live Baba.
Fela's music is devided into two.The Tony Allen era and the post Tony. The Tony era which was more explosive and the post Tony which was a bit slower classic afro beat music.
Sad..Fela sounds like the Nigerian police beat him up again not long before he covered this song with Africa 70. Well he spat in their eyes back then telling them they could never stop him and he is a big today as when he was alive. This is still entirely correct
Listening to these song now and others by Fela, i can but admit he was way ahead of his contemporaries then and even now....super talented!!! And this i say after having watched many of his live shows and countless practice sessions!!
