I cant believe that Ray Harryhausen did not receive an academy award for best special visual effects in 1963 for this movie. The animation is absolutely unbelievable!!!!!!! The man is a genius! He worked on all the special effects on his own. I'm so glad that he was finally awarded a lifetime acheivement award for his work, presented to him by Tom Hanks, sometime in the early 90s. Ray Harryhausen is a legend!
A defining moment in cinema history and a testament to creativity and innovation. An indelible reminder of the genius that Ray Harryhausen brought to the screen.
Ray Harryhausen was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of his time. He could give a few pointers to todays special affects artists. I was 10 years old when I saw this movie in 1963. And this scene still has me uneasy and amazed some 47 years later!!!
This still looks better than most CGI from the past ten years. There's an artistry to it, someone took the time to lovingly handcraft each one of those models, and spend days animated them frame by frame. A human touch that's lost with CGI.
This has got to be one of my all time favorites! I still think it looks and feels better than what we have today. I made sure my sons had videos so they could have the cool childhood experience. We were on a sort of ill fated vacation when one of my sons looked up to the heavens and exclaimed "Zeus, why must you mock me every day!" Priceless.
Very good father. I think many parents misstep in providing their children with sub-standard media and entertainment, because they figure they either don't care or don't deserve it. Not true. If anything, they need it more than adults. They need interesting, advanced, and invigorating stories, such as can only be found in vintage films. They don't need some drummed-up nonsense with lots of bright colors and loud noises, to distract the poor souls from reality. That just lowers the kid's standard for what is considered quality, and in turn lowers it for his generation.
Hats off to Ray Harryhausen - the godfather and pioneer of special effects - I went to the movies to see this when I was a kid - loved it then and still do - wonderful stuff!
Despite all the CGI trickery and special effects technology that has come and gone since this film was made in the early 1960's, this scene STILL kicks ass!
Aaaaw maan, this movie rocks!!! When I was younger and we first got a vcr, this was the only movie we had for a couple of months. Me and my bros would watch it over and over again until we got something else to watch. My mum probably gets nightmares of having to watch this for the 100000000000th time XD
This was my favorite movie as a kid, I'd grab my little plastic sword and watch it every Sunday with my friends. I find the music from this movie, more than anything else, brings back so many memories. Very nostalgic!
"Rise up you-dead, slain of the hydra".... .A complete master-piece of a film ray harryhausen as an absolute genius and the creator of real movie magic.
unforgettable scene . people who werent born in the 50.s or 60.s couldnt possibly realize how great ray harryhausen was. or how hard it was to create a scene like this before the age of computerized effects
One of the greatest pieces of work from the god of stop-motion, Ray Harryhausen. With stop-motion, you really have to put all your heart into every inch of movement, and it shows here. The animation is awesome, and it's easy to forget that actors and skeletons are not really on the same screen - something CGI rarely accomplishes for me because it's so artifical. Looking back, this scene alone might be the reason why the undead will always be my favorite faction in any kind of video game ^^ !
I have so many fond memories of stop-motion skeletons from my childhood. As a kid, adventure movies weren't totally awesome unless they had skeletal warriors. I
This is one of the best movies ever made. The skeleton fight is still one of the most exciting action sequences, especially when they come out of the ground. Ever since I saw this as a kid, it's always been fun to wipe out skeletons in any fantasy based game, like Diablo, Oblivion, etc.
I've always found it creepy when there is that moment of silence before the skeletons rise from the earth as all you hear is the wind and then this low rumbling growing louder.
Wow, pre-digital special effects always blow me away. How did Ray Harryhausen combine the stop motion with the live footage and time it out so perfectly? It just blows me away. Man's a genius.
I remember seeing this on TV in the mid 1960s (66 or 67); this scene captured my attention, but good. The next day, this skeleton fight was all the rage on the playground at school. It still holds my attention...
truly an amazing film and yes this was an epic battle, out of of the many epic battles lol Thank you Ray harryhausen for using your talent to create this and many childhood classics :)
this is on channel five as i type but i couldnt wait to see this part! amazing effects for 1963. nothing could better this for over 20years i reckon ( dont quote me on that)
That's a pretty cool fight scene, I'm not gonna lie. Especially one of the guys punching a skeleton in the fac...well, skull. That's friggin badass. And one of the Argonauts looks like Rio Ferdinand haha.
WOAH!!!!this took 4 and a half mounths to create!!! its SO amazing. it just goes to show how good a fantasy film can be with out green screens a tons of speciel effects!
Actually, they did do a remake of this in 2000 and the skeleton fight scene was pretty remarkable too. The skeletons had Greek helmets instead of skulls and they dashed themselves to pieces against each other as Jason ducked and whirled in between them. I saw this in the drive in theatre in 1979 before Close Encounters, but this scene in particular, and the clashing rocks, always were standouts. The music is fantastic too, especially the percussion and horn section.
one of the best movies of all time just my opinion im gonna be 22 this year but this film was my favorite as greek myths and all and yes the fight with the skeletons was priceless HR was a trua genius!!
The medusa scene in clash of the titans was certainly well paced and looks great - and indeed scary - but its the sheer complexity of the choreography and the personality that he gives the skeletons in jason and the argonauts that makes that the overall best for me.
I feel sorry for the kids today with their souless CGI effects driven movies like "Transformers." This - THIS is how it's done! God bless you Ray Harryhausen!
Man, that is some sweet FX. They must have choreographed and filmed that scene with real stunt men standing in for the skeletons, then filmed it again for the heroes to mime the whole thing again against nothing. Those skeletons move more like stunt men actors than animation characters.
@bluewindowx The skeletons were played by stunt actors. They kept on rehearsing the sequence until the actors knew their moves. They then filmed the scene without the stuntmen and Ray animated the skeletons in later.
It is incredibly hard to believe that the only Oscar Harryhausen ever received was an honourary one, given to him by Ray Bradbury and Tom Hanks in 1992. He was soooo overlooked in his career.
I must have seen this movie a million times and it still looks and sounds just as vibrant, scary and wonderful as it did back then. Listen to how Bernard Herrmann uses the low brass and bass clarinets and ww's. This movie ROCKS!! better than most of the shit they put out today. Old school at its BEST! "Over there....still another". CLASSIC!
I'm pretty sure it is the dream effect , that Harryhausen's genius created . That touches my subconscious. When I dream it is like this stop-motion. Haunting, yet i think I can take on this night mare and defeat it.
Harryhausen IS God. He is Zeus himself. His movies are so entertaining that movies nowadays with loads of CGI can't compare to his mastery with stop motion. My hero.

Yeah, it’s too bad… “Cleopatra” won all the design and effects awards that year
64 yrs old now and finally thought of searching for this. what a riot!!

For such a classic this movie was REALLY great!! No matter how many times you watch it, it never gets old. :)
I saw this film when it was first released.
The skeleton fight scene is still the
greatest stop motion sequence I've ever
seen.
Agreed Its one of the Best Scenes in cinematic History
This still looks better than most CGI from the past ten years. There's an artistry to it, someone took the time to lovingly handcraft each one of those models, and spend days animated them frame by frame. A human touch that's lost with CGI.
The best stop-motion animation to date. It took Ray over 4 months to complete.
It was so worth it!!!
One of the greatest piece of stop motion in film history. Still holds up now. And with Bernard Hermann's score. Fantastic.
The skeletons' warcry gives me chills every time.
It's funny how they can tell with no fucking vocal cords
@@kevinfurey2470 I guess they do it the same way they see without eyeballs, or move without muscles, or do things without a brain...
They sound cute

gotta love the double bassoons and cellos at :50. adds so much to the suspense
I remembered this scene when watching this movie with my dad when I was a kid in a theatre years ago. It scared the HELL out of me at the time!
Masterpiece of visual effects!
Despite all the CGI trickery and special effects technology that has come and gone since this film was made in the early 1960's, this scene STILL kicks ass!

Scared the hell out of me as a child. Later on I began to appreciate the gruelling work behind it.
This looks better than any special effects we see today. This is just incredible stuff.
Just awesome. Still sends a chill down my back 40 yrs later.
I love when the skeletons just start screaming and charge.

Omg i had nightmares after watching this when i was 5. Everything seemed so real back then
Never will you live to see a better marriage of effects and music than what is seen here!
I have so many fond memories of stop-motion skeletons from my childhood. As a kid, adventure movies weren't totally awesome unless they had skeletal warriors.
I
The acting may be not the best of all time, but this scene's stop-motion has a magic that we never see in today's films which have CGI.
Considering how old this film is, this scene is very impressive.
I feel very nostalgic after watching this. Well done!
I LOVE THIS SCENE SO MUCH, this and every other Ray Harryhausen there is! Plus O'Brians King Kong vs T-Rex fight!
I absolutely love this movie...been watching it since I was a kid...still loving it at 65 yrs old 😂😂😂
Simply the work of a master, the skeletons don't look out of place and their movement is fluid.
This was undoubtedly harryhausens finest piece of animation ever.
absolutely fantastic. Loved the movie as a kid, still watch it when it is on tv.
Always enjoyed these movies and much better than today's modern crap!
OMG I used to always watch this when I was a kid, over and over again just this part!

Ray Harryhausen, what a genius. This specialeffects still beats many movies today!
awesome stuff...saw it at the theater when it came out...us kids of course were of course just so amazed, I was 13 years old at time.

Great Film, great scene. This scene always fascinated me, the choreography, the claymation skeletons

When it comes to fantasy, I honestly don't think Hollywood ever topped this scene or Talos from this same movie.
LOVED THIS MOVIE AS A KID, STILL LOVE IT TODAY, THANK YOU FOR POSTING
what a great movie, i like the Talos ankle/achilles blood drain, and the music
watched this today on bbc hd best movie ever made imo for 1963 this must of been mind blowing
Se passase estes filmes antigos nos cinemas de hoje. Daria um público enorme para assistir, eu tenho certeza. Isto q era filme bom.!!!!!
The exact thing happened to me when I was on a lads holiday in Majorca in 1982

Fun fact: Harryhausen had some of his other monster creations imaged on the skeleton shields. For instance, the giant octopus and the Ymir.
