On Great Northern, they are, as of the December 2024 timetable change, bringing in class 379s which used to run for Greater Anglia on the West Anglia Main Line as well as the Stanstead Express (before the introduction of class 720s and 745s). These trains have an actual different interior with First class having different more comfy seats and being in a 2+1 layout, which is a good thing. Sadly they won't be replacing the 387s but complementing them so I feel like it'll sort of be a lottery if you buy your ticket in advance.
Hello Jessica , My local service from Tweedbank - Edinburgh sometimes has 1st class compartment and you can use it free of charge to use it there seats on board free either side of the train on a class 170 train.
So few people bother with first class on those trains that if you are a first class paying passenger, and others see you sitting in there, they will assume they can sit in there as well. "Well, if they're sitting in there. Why can't I!?"
Heathrow Express first class was so much better before GWR ruined it by replacing the 332s with the 387s. Also worth noting that the 387s for Great Northern and Gatwick Express are identical. The GN ones were cancelled Southern units, and then the Gatwick ones were part of the order with the seats made red, accents made blue, and i believe a couple extra luggage racks. Its also worth pointing out that the 377/6s and /7s for Southern ALSO have the same interior. But I don't know if they fitted those with "First Class". Finally, all operators covered in this video have no guards, so you'll never get ticket checked. The only chance of it is revenue inspector checks in peak times. I'm not advocating for it, but there's not much stopping one sitting in First Class on these trains with a standard class ticket. (Also, G says hi 😂)
This is crazy: Southern have started running Gatwick Express liveried units out of Southampton but have discontinued the Southampton to London Victoria service, which would run via Gatwick. Consequently, you now have Gatwick Express liveried units going nowhere near Gatwick.
Well an asterisk is that it is not all services, but still. In my opinion, when they next get repainted, they should go with a brand-neutral livery to reflect the fact they often run on southern as well as GX.
On most of these communter style trains I guess the only reason to buy a First Class ticket is to actually be able to sit down on a packed out rush hour train when all the standard seats are full and there's hundreds standing. The FC section will be empty because most people won't pay for a FC ticket. So maybe they should stop calling it FC and call it "Guaranteed Seat Class"? Well done for stumping up the cash to try these out! 😀
London Northwestern have stopped selling first class now. It ended in May 2023. I think their trains still have the seats, but it's not officially "first class" anymore, so I didn't include it.
@TravelSoGood Thankyou for the response. I have been 1st class before on them a few years ago, way before May 2023. I had no idea they'd stopped their 1st class offering, so thamkyou for pointing that out. I suspect you would've given it 0 anyway as it was awful.
"Complimentary drinks" is one way of putting it, their way I'd say. Another, more accurate way, I'd say, is drinks you've paid for in the first class surcharge. Nice vid, and Pip pip.
Good video, thank you for pulling together. I believe First Great Western (FGW) also has First Class on its 165 & 166’s - they are offering First Class between Reading and Gatwick Airport.
Interesting. However, for this video my aim was to look at companies that ONLY do seat-only first class. Maybe one day I'll look at that GWR service, although I have done it in standard class! Coming to think of it... when I was in Portsmouth, there was one of those GWR trains that had just come in from Cardiff. I had a sneaky look at it but didn't film it. It looked awful!
Yeah. I was going to mention the operators who had got rid of their first class completely but the video was too long as it was! Chiltern have ditched theirs too
Southern first class is actually useful if a 377/1 turns up with the 3+2 seating throughout but it's still useless as they still have 2+2 in the carriage ends
Interestingly with SWR, First Class is probably best value on a 450 as the 444 is already 2+2 seating with tables or tray tables. Some routes seem to use both units interchangeably. Likewise the 159s are 2+2 seating with tables, tray tables and padding. Not sure what first class is like and whether any of the refreshments on 444s and 159s with trolley services would be complimentary in first? Southern is also variable with most trains being 2+2 seating identical to first class in the driving cars but 3+2 seating on far less comfortable narrow high backed seats without tables in the centre cars. Likewise, some Southern trains use ironing board seats identical to Great Northern’s, presumably both in first and standard. An interesting spin off series might be how to travel in former first class, e.g. centre of London Midland 350s, one end of unrefurbished GWR 165s, one end of some 170s, former Business Zone on Chiltern, etc. It is often worth a nicer seat, recliners, lights, etc with 2+1 or 2+2 compared to 2+2 or 2+3 respectively for free! Similarly, it would be interesting to learn about when first class is always declassified and standard class only routes which sometimes use trains with first class seats. Overall a really interesting, insightful and entertaining series. Keep up the good work 😊
Class 444s are a bit more spacious, but they were far better in there original format in SWT days.1st class was 2 + 1 in those days. Class 158/159's still have 2+1 seating in 1st class. For me its well worth the money. All SWR catering trolleys were withdrawn for Covid and never returned. The only 1st class comps were a free drink in 1st class on trains arriving or departing London before 10:00. Now a memory.
Great Eastern had 1st class on its commuter routes before they became Greater Anglia - it was so bad Greater Anglia got rid of it and went standard class only when the class 720s took over from the class 321s! I did cheekily sit in there once and the seats were only a smidgen more comfortable.
Personally I think the Intercity 125 trains are 💯% better & the first class from experience is superb & it is worth the extra money from experience Pal. 👍
First class on Thameslink is totally bizarre, and on some routes it is declassified at both ends (Sutton, Sevenoaks, Rainham and the all stations services to St. Albans and Luton). This results in the situation where some trains between St. Albans and Luton have declassified first class, but an identical train a few minutes earlier or later doesn't Back in the 1990s, station announcements and platform screens at Gatwick Airport would show trains as terminating at Clapham Junction (even though they were in going to Victoria) just so unsuspecting tourists would pay the rip off prices for Gatwick Express
Hi Jessica, 1). Southern used to offer trolley service catering on longer routes, which used to dispense complimentary hot drinks in First Class, but they withdrew all on train catering about a decade ago. 2). South West Railway offers a greater First Class seat differential onboard their class 444 Deairo trains (which operate longer distance services, including Portsmouth Harbour - Waterloo services), and class 158/159 diesel trains, which operate services on the Waterloo - Salisbury - Yeovil - Exeter unelectrified route. South West Railway similarly offered at seat trolley catering on longer distance services, but all catering was withdrawn at the onset of the pandemic and has never returned. 3). The class 387 is the second generation of trains to operate the Heathrow Express. These trains are operated by GWR on behalf of BAA (owner of Heathrow Airport). Therefore, they are taken from GWR's original fleet of 387's, and so are very similar. The previous Heathrow Express class 332 trains were purpose built for the service. In First Class, they had more basic seats, but they were arranged in just a 1 + 1 configuration. The First Class areas were therefore extremely spacious, with almost unlimited space for luggage. 4). Great Northern are taking the ex Anglia class 379 trains. The First Class seats on these are arranged in the usual 2 + 1 configuration, and so do offer a noticeable difference between First and Standard. Chloë
With the class 379, I wouldn't hold your breath, because I wouldn't be surprised if they do a slight refurb before they come into service, and that could result in the replacement of 2+1 seating with 2+2, as that would create extra "capacity", albeit, more cpaacity to rip people off.
You've gotten very unlucky in terms of the 377s - Some other subclasses of 377s have way more comfortable seats, although just like the 171s, basically just identical to standard. London Northwestern Railway also used to operate with First Class (albeit with basically an identical interior to the 450), but was fully declassified during 2023. Great video Jessica!
Great Northern also technically operate class 700s when they run out of 387s from Gatwick Express, c2c and GWR, and inevitably use the 8 car sets with fewer seats than the trains they are replacing. It baffles me to this day why they scrapped all the happy trains without securing a replacement for them. 🤦♀
13:36 Actually it seems that many other routes outside London have first class as well. I aimed a tweet at SWR a while ago about Portsmouth to Southampton, and first class is in operation on there it seems, and proven by the timetables. The inner suburban trains don't have first class, as its not even fitted in the trains.

387 and 377/6/7 FC and Standard the literally only difference is the moquette. That is it. The reast of 377s like the one you travelled on, some Standard Class seats are identical to first ones and some are worse
I remember seeing a first class compartment on a 377/3, and it looked in a dire state, and it appeared that someone had been sick in there. Albeit, class 377/3 first class do have a slight advantage, which is that you get a full-length table, rather than the half length one in standard class.
SWR offer two more different first class seats (on the 444s and 159/158 units), they all differ slightly with the 159/158 one being the best, the 450 first class I must admit is the worst of them, so I don't think only looking at one of these seats is a fair representation of the service. Great video overall though!
