      @@TheeDrumWorkshop is this module considerably better than the TD50x?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alexyoung5798 It totally depends on what you mean by "better"! It sounds more "acoustic" than the TD-50X, it can now load new multilayer instruments whereas the 50X can't and it does some other features in ways that the 50X doesn't/can't. But the 50X can do other things better than the Mimic, like quick sound shaping on-module with its modelling, transient shaping, multiFX and some other stuff. The digital pads paired with the 50X are still pretty top-tier when it comes to playability too, but the Mimic rivals its trigger performance with analogue pads. So it really depends on what your wants and needs are.

    Tried the position sense with different pads this morning, here are my findings: EFnote 14 snare from the efnote 7 kit: works just perfect, smooth transition between center and side samples. Roland PDA-120LS: works good on the sides but not on the top part where you usually start rolls, it triggers center sounds starting from the top, ghost notes on both sides are triggered correctly as side sounds. Roland PD-108: works great, good transition from side to center sounds from all sides. GEWA 14" from the gewa g5 pro BS kit, works ok, good transition from center to side samples, struggles a bit with low velocity side hits being registered as center hits but overall works ok, rim signal is also a bit weak. So to resume if I have to pick one right now it would be:
    1. EFNOTE 14" Snare
    2. Roland PD-108
    3: GEWA 14"
    4: Roland PD120LS

I'm working on setting up PS with my Roland PD-128 (& PD-125). It works OK but I was hoping for more. I may have forgot something or maybe you have some other magic for me to perform.

    Hey Luke,
    First off thank you for your input, evaluation, suggestions, and concern. Much appreciated.
    You briefly addressed this. Not to be too demanding here but regarding positional sensing on pads other than ATV, you noted it works somewhat on a single cone Roland PD-128. Do you believe this would also be successful on a Roland PD-125? If so, what manufacturer pad assignment would you suggest?
    Thanks again,
    Steve K.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! I would imagine so, but of course I haven't been able to test it. You would have to use the ATV preset for it and probably invert the position like I mentioned for the PD-128. The rest of the setup would then need to be tailored to the exact pad (top velocity, head/rim balance, the exact values for the centre/edge samples etc.)

    Legitimately - I used the mimic editor and I don’t understand how you can separate out room sounds for the direct sources to be able to work within the mimics mixer.
    For example - snare direct hit on the default sounds are a mix of direct, overhead and room.
    How can I do this for my own samples? Is it possible?

    Luke, could You make detailed video of making music that follows drums, rather than playing to backing tracks? I think Shawn Crowder from Sungazer shown sometning like that a while ago. Like programing kick trigger with random sounds based on some scales. Same on snare and everything else. Cymbals making synth backgrounds ect. You know what I mean. I wish to set up my pmp module with DAW so whatever I play on drums the music follows based on different formulas I choose. In future I dream about virtual band members based on AI modules. Imagine virtual bass, guitar or piano players play along with You. Each one learning from You and every other AI band member! That will change everything. Thanks for awesome video.

    Would it be possible to add positional sensing to v-drums connected to Addictive drums, by adding another piezo to the edge of a drum and connecting it to the AUX input of the Roland module and then Midi Mapping it inside Addictive?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've never tried a method like that but I don't think it would work, no. Both piezos would still trigger whether you hit the edge or center (a side trigger still picks up hits from other locations), so I think it would just trigger both inputs at different velocities depending on where you're hitting the pad.

    Hello, I updated my mimic and finally they fixed the player. it stops at the end of the sequence now BUT Loop still doesn't work for professional playback. the timeline works in seconds (c'mon!!!) , i made then a separate track for the loop section but although the tracks loops ok there is around a eighth pause at 114 bpm when the player goes to next song. Can you communicate with the team developping mimic software? the loop can't be used in shows this way and it would be a really nice feature to add to the module. otherwise the loop function will be locked to rehearsing pourposes only and it would definetly be a pity.

      Hey! I'm not exactly sure what you're asking for. There are pad presets in the Mimic Pro for ATV cymbals and the aD-S13 snare drum in the most recent update. You will still need to dial them in to your liking - this can't be done without the pad and module in front of you as every pad will respond a little different and every person expects a different feel. The rest of the ATV drum pads can be used easily with other presets already found on the module - most kick drum presets will work with most pads and the toms would dial in easily with the dual zone side-trigger option.

      Hey! I haven't tested it myself to know for sure, but I believe that those xD pads are very similar to the aD pads (same 3 cones on the head). I think the rim piezo setup might be different (from what I've read, at least).
      Since it's just using the head for the PS, my guess is that you would get very similar results with the xD pads. As I say, I can't be sure, but I'd be surprised if there was a big difference swapping between these pads on the Mimic.

    Hi Luke, thanks for the Mimic Pro update overview. I have a question about your hi-hat setup in the video. I'm also using a Yamaha PCY135 for my hi-hat. I'm using an eDRUMin 10 with Superior Drummer. I notice you're not using the Yamaha pin and that you seem to have the PCY135 held in a way that there is only the amount of movement you might get with an acoustic hi-hat that's closed but not with full foot down pressure. Have you ever shared the details on how you have that set - it looks like it plays better than what I'm doing now. Thanks

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! I'm just using a hi-hat clutch to hold the PCY-135 in place, but it has rubber washers instead of felts. This is a big part of what stops it from moving too much because the rubber fills the hole entirely rather than just sitting on top of it like felts would, so it grips down on it pretty hard. The rubber then also helps to prevent spinning since I'm not using the anti-spin rod.

      Yes, I believe if phantom power gets turned on for those XLR channels, it could damage the module. Best practice is to use a DI box (either one for each channel you use or a DI rack with multiple DIs), that way you can use jack outputs from the module which will be converted XLR for the front of house and also eliminate that phantom power issue.

The approach to the sounds are objectively different, so anyone who prefers "real drums" recorded in a "real room" will likely prefer the Slate samples, whereas Roland's sound character has a charm that some people really warm to and it's very customisable.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the SSD3 snares don't have full head side samples, unfortunately. One thing I've noticed is that there is a slight variation when you go to the edge because the head of these samples actually contains the rimshot on the highest velocities, whereas the version of the head samples that make up the "side" articulation doesn't! I'll make sure to include all of this info if I get around to the PS setup video I'm hoping to do at some point.

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop Hi Luke, my eDRUMin and PD-125 arrived today. I am just focused on testing the used PD-125 atm. May I ask for your input?
      With my TM-6 Pro, I am simply swapping out the PD-125 for the PDX-8 I am using for the snare which I have triggering exactly as desired and I would like to achieve the same or better results with the PD-125. I am able to get the results I want on the rim of the PD-125 with the factory TM-6 Pro PD-125 trigger settings, however, the head seems less loud and I am having to put in too much effort with heavier sticks to both hit the head hard and quickly enough to achieve a proper amount of attack with varied settings across PD-128, PD-125X, PD-125 or even PDX-8 trigger profiles. The rim is at the sensitivity where I want it to be and increasing the sensitivity by 1 is a bit too strong for the head and also doesn't really solve my attack problem.
      Specifically the used PD-125 (which is in good shape) came with a drum-tec real feel mesh head and this is my first experience with either. The PDX-8 has its stock v-drum remo head.
      When playing hi-hat to snare and back the snare really has trouble distinguishing itself due to the lack of attack. There doesn't seem to be a significant hotspot on the pad. It does trigger stronger in the center but I pretty much have to hit it dead on the cone with force and speed to achieve the proper amount of attack.
      Have you tried the drum-tec real feel mesh heads vs the stock v-drum remo heads on a PD-125 before and observed reduced transient sensitivity in head triggering?

      Nvm the trigger cone is shot

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@3rdGen-Media I'm glad you worked out what the issue was. Just for future reference, if you do find that the head signal needs the sensitivity increasing but the rim is now giving too "hot" a signal, you can use the Rim Gain setting to bring the rim down in relation to the head. If you go down to 0.9 or further, this will effectively be 90% of the head signal and so on.

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop I do wonder if the positional sensing is on par with the Roland digital snare? I stayed away from the digital snare for a couple years due to I normally play a 13 inch acoustic snare. But once I finally got the digital snare hooked up to my td27 it was a game changer. The realism it added was amazing. Much of a bigger jump than the digital hats. I never knew what I was missing.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not as accurate as the digital snare in terms of exact tracking - it jumps around a bit more and it seems a little more sensitive to badly tensioned heads. (Though if I watch the monitor on my 50X, it jumps around a bit more than you would think!)
      However, in practice it's not noticeably worse when playing and it adds a LOT to the sound and feel of the instruments. It just adds so much more liveliness to the SSD 4 & 5 sounds in particular.

    • @482jpsquared
      @482jpsquared ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop I don't disagree overall, but I will add from my experience that equal head tension does make a difference. I have a 13" DIY three-cone snare with which I have achieved equal or better PS response than my ATV. That could be due to the fact that I have a Drum-Tec Real Feel head on the DIY which is a bit firmer, whereas the ATV head flexes more where a strike is hit. You may want to try the Drum-Tec head. I haven't tried the Drum-Tec head on my ATV snare but I may when I get a minute of spare time.
