It's the biggest firefighter conference in the world, and it takes place in a very important city in automotive history. You should convince your department to buy you a ticket next year. Good work on the rust repairs Jeff. Just a note, try to cover or protect your painted surfaces and glass from grinding sparks and weld spatter. The stuff eats in and imbeds itself into paint and glass. I ended up getting a cheap fire blanket and use that as my protector.

Just one thing, for what I know dust from body filer is prety harmful, and everytime I see you sanding whithout dust mask I suffer a lot. Please wear a dust mask when doing that kind of jobs ( you just have one set of lungs for life) . Cheers from Spain and keep doing the things you love, congratulations again.
Nice work Jeff mate just a tip for you with your primer on the door need to put some kind of paint on it as if not the mostager will get in to the primer and start to slowly rust again

I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos and it has inspired me to do what I enjoy doing. I have never done panelbeating work and I would like to start doing it on my Beetle. For starters, what welding machine do you use and what is the thickness of the sheet metal? Thanks.
Here's kind of a random question - what is the spec on the wheels you use in your angle grinder when you are working on sheet metal like this? For grinding? For cutting? When I go to the hardware store, there are dozens of choices and I'm never quite sure what to get. Keep up the good work - lots of inspiration here for me as I plan my own Beetle resto!
I usually use 40 grit flap discs. I have found they work much better for grinding down welds than the hard discs, and they don't heat the panel up as much.
You shoud check out ryan little for some background music with a bit more "pop" to it. I really like his music and I think it could fit your timelapse parts pretty well :) Edit: they are copyright free so you can use them for your videos without any problems as long as you link his channel in your description
Mate, you make me look like Mr Safety the way you cut your patch pieces with that angle grinder. My hands are scarred all over with angle grinder cuts lol. I can't see scars on your hands???
Noice. Do you use gasless or gas MIG? Gas kills it, worth the cost. Maybe TIG if you're gonna be doing more of this stuff (I think so) You can get some cheaper units on ebay to try out. But yeh, nice birthday for the ol' girl
I use gas. I struggled along with gasless for years and as soon as I tried gas, I have never looked back. Sooo much better and cleaner. I actually have a brand new TIG waiting for me to try, but I still have to get a chance to try it. I have never used a TIG so I am looking forward to learning a new skill.

I should have known that because quite a few episodes ago you did that & I should of just glanced back through. Could you please tell me the particular model you have. I still have the old CIG mig I bought back in the '90's & it's hard to get new tips etc etc. Yours is gasless too yes? I still pay my bottle rent & when you don't use it as much anymore it becomes expensive. I'm just doing the floors on my 1962 Vanguard Six & I'm thinking it time for a change. Cheers for your great content Jeff, not only is it great to watch but it also inspires people to do the work themselves. Any idea when you maybe putting Polo-neck shirts on the merch site? I hate T-shirts but I'd definitely buy a few polo's.
The company I use don't offer Polo's as an option sorry. As for the MIG I would suggest the M150 which is gas/gasless. As for the gas, you don't need to pay bottle rental anymore. Finally the companies have realised and (if you are in Aus') you can pay a 1 off purchase fee and then just bring the bottle back to Bunnings and swap it for a full one quite cheaply. Gasless works, but once you go Gas you can never go back ;)

That is why part way through I chucked up the welding blanket, but the whole car is being resprayed so at least the paint I was not too worried about.

Door bottoms rust out because nobody keeps the door drains clear. But that is rusted in an odd place no doubt.....great vids.

Good stuff Jeff. You will have rust soon if you don’t top coat it mate. Primer is hygroscopic which means it will rust underneath the primer :(

what gauge is the sheet metal you go to for patches?
I use 0.8mm steel sheet for all of my repairs which seems to be pretty close. Not sure what that is as a gauge, but I am sure you can convert it.

I just got a new Bossweld Inverter MIG. I am finding the new inverter style MIG so much easier to use than the old transformer MIG I had.
