I really appreciate how clear and concise your instructions are. I have gotten way more out of your short videos than hours of other “how-to” videos.

Basically what you're describing is what Motocross and road race riders call squaring off a corner. Definitely more similar to a Motocross move. 👍 Hairpins and switchbacks are ideal for squaring off a corner. The only downside is you have to put more lean angle and steering input to the bike, but as far as the best way around a tight corner it is definitely better than trying to take what might be considered a traditional line. Corners will always be a compromise finding the shortest distance or the quickest way through will require the give-and-take of speed versus traction. I'm really enjoying your videos Simon. As a former road racer and long-time road bike rider I'm new to the MTB and it is so different and such a steep learning curve. Your videos are helping navigate the trails and the techniques. 👍👍👍
Very much appreciated for your time your efforts experience and knowledge!

Around here in Colorado going up on the bank and eroding the trail is totally a NO NO. This should never be done on public trails trashing all the work the volunteers do in maintaining the trails.. Stick to the nose manual since you are that talented to do it.

HUH? Anyone care to explain the stuff at 1:01 to 1:28 pls. Specifically I was lost w...
with a lefthand turn w a left foot forward rider: front foot pre-turn and a back foot turn.
with a lefthand turn w a right foot forward rider: back foot pre-turn and a front foot turn.
with a righthand turn w a left foot forward rider: back foot pre-turn and a front foot turn.
with a righthand turn w a right foot forward rider: front foot pre-turn back foot turn.
I assume that’s what he called “double footwork,” but well I’m LOST! With that, what’s meant by a “preturn?” I’ve no clue what the feet are actually doing! I get what a lefthand turn and a right hand turn are, duh. I also get what right foot forward rider means versus left foot forward rider means, anthr duh. I totally don’t understand the front foot preturn and back but turn mean- What’s going on there?!? I’d like this to be a duh, but it’s a bigass HUH! Explain it like I’m a 5 year old please! Any help would be greatly appreciated, by the youtuber or bike community. Thank you.

Obviously I’m a new rider. My aim is to do more than hold onto my bike and hope my bike or luck makes it! I want to be the reason my bike makes it!

A little bit confusing - Simon is just referring to a left turn as a front-foot turn for a left foot forward rider. For a left foot forward rider, a right turn would be a back-foot turn.
As for the pre-turn, you can see these throughout the video, as the riders do a small turn in the opposite direction before the actual turn - this sets you up better for the turn.

@@videosbyevo Thanks for trying to explain it for me, but I’m still confused. I even re-watch the video… Even tried at .0.25 speed!
With your first paragraph...Can you try using different words 🤷🏽‍♀️ Maybe pretend I’m 3yrs old 😆
At first I thought he was describing turning the pedals in the backward direction in order to get the foot positioned on the outside of the turn at the or closer to the bottom of the pedal stroke, but that doesn’t fit his full sentence.
As for the preturn, I think I get it-before that sharp right turn in the trail, create your own small left turn in order to improve one’s positioning for the “real” turn. Yes? BUT how is this associated to what the feet are doing?
There’s the turn of the pedals and the turn in the trail...add hips and eyes turning and there’s too many uses of the word turn...is this where I’m getting lost??
      Thanks!

Why not just simply say this...when you approach the turn put your outside foot forward and your inside foot to the rear. So on a right hand turn that means your left foot (outside) goes forward and your right foot (inside) goes back and on a left hand turn your right foot (outside) goes forward and your left foot (inside) goes back? Then as you make the actual turn you drive the pedal down. The pre-turn is the part where you line up on the inside track and turn in the opposite direction of the turn so your front tire goes up the bank making a wide circle and then finally into the actual turn...

@@FreeRangeChicken_MTB Thanks FRC...that makes sense and is what I already do when nothing wacky is going on in my body; when wackiness ensues I’ve a foot forward preference. And that’s what a preturn is-thanks! I’ll rewatch the vid anthr time and see if I can make heads/tails.

I keep Left foot forward and right (dominant) foot rearward. For left turn I can press down (pump) briefly with the Left foot for pre-turn. For a right turn, how do I make a quick pump on the right foot with it being in the rear for pre-turn? Should I move the right foot forward to do the pre-turn ?

    • @videosbyevo
      @videosbyevo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think switching your lead foot is the answer, you can still make a similar move no matter which foot is forward. It's normal to have this feel more natural on one side compared to the other.

I'm new to mountain biking, but why not start out all the way on the outside? Your back wheel will be further away from the corner.
