Love them or hate them, you have to respect what Genesis did. Mastering quite different music styles takes guts and talent. How many other bands went from Prog to New Wave to Synth Pop to Space Rock and did it successfully? Queen and Rush are two others I can think of who adapted to the music styles of the day and remained successful, but there aren't many who did it as well as Genesis. And don't forget FIVE of the members of Genesis also had successful solo careers. How many other bands can say that?

Peter Gabriel was the driving force in early Genesis. when he left, Solsbury Hill on his debut solo album was about him leaving Genesis. That says everything. Phil Colins did a great job with Tony Banks and Steve Hacket keeping it real artistically on A Trick of The Tale and Wind and Wuthering. Two fantastic, progressive, not Top 40 albums. When Hacket left, they decided to go Top 40 and it sucked, with an occasional great progressive track.

For me, I believe the sweet spot in musical history was from about ‘67-‘85, an intersectional period when so many styles came together, and when we were all forced to listen to a limited number of outlets, when the LP was king, and before the record companies and broadcasters broke up the industry into categories targeted for specific audiences. During that period the prolific genius of all those styles was exposed to a much wider swathe of the population. THAT, is what made those times so special.
