Historic Lake Effect THUNDERSNOW!

- Relentless #lightning and #thunder occured during an intense lake effect snowstorm from Nov 17-20th, 2022 in and around the #buffalo metro area. The hardest hit areas were in the southtowns where snow totals were over 80" over the course of 3 days.
This might be the best case study of thundersnow in a lake effect event on record as hundreds of bolts came off the lake during this event.

Ughhhh my back hurts just watching this..one of the craziest storms in a long time. Then Again right before Christmas we got it.
Those 2 storms were insane. Both rank in the top 5 of all time storms in buffalo. The December was worse than the blizzard of 1977.

Is it more common near Lake Effect areas i wonder?
It's definitely more common in lake effect areas. It is more common in early season events (November/December) where the temperature differential is the greatest. When 30 degree temperatures are crossing 50 degree lake water it creates extreme instability leading to increase likelihood of thunder snow.
WOW, just so crazy how it *sounds* like a thunder storm...but snow is falling??? My brain woiuld be so confused to experience this in person, having never seen this combination.
We get more thundersnow here than anywhere in the world.

I see this video is from 2022, Northeast Ohio had this happen again on Halloween night 2023! The roads were horrible!😱
Yeah, Nov. 17-20th, 2022 during that big lake effect snow event. Northeast Ohio can get some pretty big Lake effect events as well. In addition to thundersnow.
