    You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.

    It’s crazy to think that my great grandmother was in a similar position. Her fiance was killed at Gallipoli, and my eventual great grandfather was wounded there and evacuated home. They got married 10 years after the war and here I am. He suffered from his wounds for the rest of his life and died in his forties. Lest We Forget.

No World War or other wars ever delivered complete peace. Look at what we now have, 🇺🇦 Ukrainians fighting another war from Russia. Pray for world peace.

    What a waste of lives .. I wouldn't be here today if Turks didn't manage to defend themselves as I'm of Turk origin. Here is one of Ataturk's quotes. “Heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives! You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.”

    Very touching, and sure had me crying. Well done. When that old fella was tearing up at the end… gosh darn, I almost couldn’t take it. Also, that private white could sure write a love note. although, the first thing I thought of when she had scratched out that paragraph… private white was WW1 sexting. Guaranteed. I say that with some experience writing (well in this case emails) letters back home.

    No mention of the Welsh regiments who fought at Gallipoli? Oh that's right, it was only the ANZACs. Nobody else was there.

    • @SlyBlu7
      @SlyBlu7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I mean, they state outright that they're following the landing of one Australian soldier - and the two did not land at the same beaches or see much intermixing of their formations. Also, the presenter lays out early on that his ancestor was Scottish, and was wounded during the battle.
      Why focus your ire solely on the exclusion of the Welsh? Irish, Scottish, and English soldiers all made landings, alongside commonwealth troopers from India and Canada, as well as allied French and their own colonial troops from Africa. Arrayed against them were conscripts and volunteers from across the whole of the Ottoman Empire, with German advisors and a handful of German infantry as well; all shared in the hardships, tragedies, and deprivations of combat in that inhospitable place.

    • @DidMyGrandfatherMakeThis
      @DidMyGrandfatherMakeThis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SlyBlu7 because nobody ever talks about the Welsh regiments there. And it's not 'focusing my ire' as you so eloquently and incorrectly phrase it. Constantly we are told that it was only the ANZACs at Gallipoli and it was the ANZACs that were killed in their droves and categorically that is false.

    • @SlyBlu7
      @SlyBlu7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@DidMyGrandfatherMakeThis I asked why you focus on the absence of Welsh specifically. It seems you're personally invested.
      It's unfortunate, but it's run-of-the-mill. We never hear much about the ANZACs who fought on the Somme, at Messines, Passchendael, Ypres, or Amiens. Over 50% of Australian casualties were suffered on the Western Front, and they suffered the highest casualty rates of any Commonwealth forces with 65% of their active troops killed or wounded.
      We likewise hear very little about the French involvement in the evacuation of Dunkirk in WW2. Americans rarely talk about the British and Canadian landings on D-Day. Rarely are the Soviets ever mentioned in any discussion of the larger war effort.
      I understand the frustration, and I do wish that there was a separate Timeline documentary focusing on the landings at Cape Helles, where the British and French went ashore. But I understand why so much of the discourse revolves around the Australians and New Zealanders at Gallipoli.

    Indeed very impressive individual and well presented stories. No doubt about this. Gallipoli was needless as all of the meat grinders of the great war.
    After all Gallipoli was important to Mustafa Kemal Pascha's fame and future career. He and his successful campains in Gallipoli and east Anatolia are a key to the shape of modern Turkey. So when memorating about the "shape of a nation" then Turkey - and Ataturk's Young Turkish - must be mentioned first an foremost. Surprisingly I didn't catch a word about them in the whole film. In fact this documentary transports a narrow (nationalistic) and lopsided view.
