This makes total sense. My '00 996 with 50k miles had the 1 sec rattle on startup, this after it hadn't been started for a day. If it sat for a week it would rattle for 2 or 3 seconds due to the longer drain down. I replaced just the bank-1 tensioner with the updated one and the rattle disappeared. The insertion depth of the new tensioner was ~1mm longer than the old one and the new one would take 16 lbs before giving way on a scale whereas the old one would take 14 lbs. Note also that the bank-1 tensioner is furthest from the oil pump. Oil travels first to the bank-2, then to the IMS tensioner, and finally to the bank-1.
@@etilhcir4645 could be if you have the rattle and it goes away in seconds. Mine is a '00 and the tensioner was first updated around '02 to the stiffer, 1mm longer version and maybe updated again later. Yours is newer so I don't know if the most recent part will be a benefit. Maybe check with Pelican. The tensioner is around $125. Mine is still running great.
@@tuul75 I was doing my IMSB so the bank 1 cam was locked. I don't think you'd need to lock it just for the tensioner, but better to check with a mechanic. Note that after not driving for a few days the lifters will drain down too and cause a rattle until they fill up.
Do the chain guides have to be replaced when you start seeing plastic pieces in the sump? Can those guides be replaced without fully removing the heads on a 3-chain engine? Thanks in advance
I've found a tiny piece (smaller than a grain of rice) of chain guide in each of my last two oil changes (06 Boxster S) and have been chasing random misfire codes since I got the car 12 months ago. I'm trying to find out if I can somehow test or measure something to determine whether my chains or guides or both need changing. Did you end up doing yours?
Interesting video, I have a 2000 Boxster S with only 63000 km (garage princess) that gets oil changed every 3000 km Mobil 1 0W40. Car is all original never needed and repairs, just new tires, pads, engine oil and transmission oil changes (shiftronic). So I get the brief startup chain rattle as you describe , how does replacing the one chain tensioner solve this problem as it seems to be working as designed since it is in it's "inverted", as you describe position. Is the updated unit better, is this the right side of engine that needs replacement ?
You wouldn’t see any of the chain guides because they are plastic (non-metallic). These small pieces would be found, visually, within the pleats of your oil filter.

Thinking of changing my bank 1 tensioner as I have a startup rattle after a few days. Did you lock the cams or just unbolt it and install new one?

Great video! What mileage on the Boxster? What mileage do you need to start worrying about this?
What is the estimated time to replace the chain guides and IMS bearing, on a Tip car?

@@juliank911 Hey Julian! Did you ever figure it out?
@@thornclawofwarriors no, not yet. Need to order the parts
You can, there's a video on TH-cam by helpmediy, he has a lot of boxster content
Good stuff..I've seen your shop in Winter Park for years. Didn't realize the quality of personal. I will be contacting you.
Can you make a video on how to put the chain back on my bicycle.

The video answered all your questions, every one.
thank you
So you would see that in a magnetic oil plug and filter, right?
