I remember back in 87, when they did the first reunion tour, I forget which band member it was who said he never saw Ronnie write ANYTHING down. So long as the guitarists remembered a given song's riff, Ronnie always remembered the words.
I was at the Tribute Tour at Starwood in October 87 man people got 4-5 big ass fires burn on the hillside no security could put um out man he hung th straw hat on the mic and we sang🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘
The tribute to Ronnie with the hat on the mic just makes me all sad. Great tribute and one of the best rock anthems of all time. Priceless. Thanks for sharing.
just imagine the chills to this song when BOTH brothers in Skynyrd family were there to play it at a concert!!!...& those days are gone!!...still 38 years on...you still rock guys!! let rock never die!
Peeter1000, the video is of Lynyrd Skynyrd after the plane crash when they agreed to join together along with Johnny Van Zant to do a tribute for the 10 yr anniv. It was so well recieved that is caused them to agree to keep doing it. Recently pianist Billy Powell just died putting the future of the band in question again
I really love this Song, particularly the Version from the "Southern by the Grace of God" Album from the 1987 Tribute-Tour, which this Version unfortunatly isn´t. This here is from the California Concert, on the Album it was from the Dallas-Gig, 14:50 long. Don´t mess with Texas! ;)
Boyd, I know you're now floating down Heaven's ultimate river - and I can just picture your sweet, unforgettable smile as you paddle along! This song will always remind me of you and your love of music, of good friends and fun, of nature, and of just life itself! Rest in peace....you left us way too soon :( You'll be sorely missed here on Earth, but you're "free as a bird" now....
Im garyianneales missus, just become a fan at the age of 46years old, this vid made me cry!! in a good way..... This number lifts me up whatever my mood XXX
Ohh man i'm 13 years old since i was a little kid i've been listening to rock !! today all people listening to Justin bieber lady gaga..... in my world that's not music !. I would wish that i was born in the 70's that was the time when music actually was (MUSIC) THUMBS UP IF YOU WANT THE ROCK BACK!!!
Ed does such an amazing job here it makes me think Allen might have picked up a little of Ed King. Don't forget in the first album "Pronounced" Ed was by far the most experienced in the studio. Of course Allen played the solo note for note every time so he probably wrote the solo.
@@inquiry7 As the story goes, Allen wrote that solo when he was 17 and stuck it in his back pocket. Finally found a use for it some years later, and the rest is history!
This is a beautiful tribute. Brother to brother. Your brother is truly a free bird now. I will put a feather in my visor in my car as a tribute to all the free birds alive and or dead. I am a free bird and I salute all the freebirds. I salute all those who think they are grim reapers because they survived death and it is my mission to let them know they are angels in disguise. To all the angels in disguise. I hold up a bottle of Jack Daniels. I don't drink but I still hold a bottle in case.
====If you love this song, look for Green Grass and High Tides by the Outlaws. An amazing ten-minute southern rock anthem you will also love, with a screamin' hot guitar section! =====I think it was great that during the Rossington-Collins years and during the early reunion years, they only did FreeBird as an instrumental, leaving out the late Ronnie's vocals. They didn't have to do it that way but they did and I give them credit for it.
@tbmcustomerservice Yea it is always sad to lose some of the warriors before their time. But what a way to go. He lived and he lived well. He is now on a new Job.
i agree that this is an excellent version of free bird. it got me teary eyed as well. another version of this song that is great is from the album: one more from the road
Damn right. Love the hat on the microphone. This song sends a chill up my spine. Can someone tell me if Allen Collins played in this one. All the band has changed so I can't tell.
Allen Collins did not play during the tribute tour in 1987. He was paralyzed from a car accident. He was given the title of Music director for this tour.
@howtodohelp - It's good to see someone who appreciates good music and not just pop bullshit. There are some bands who still carry the torch but seeing that they are not commercial POP, nobody hears about them. If you want to hear some great music from bands that are current check out, Iron & Wine, The Great Lakes Swimmers, Sigur Ros, Mark Kozalek and Tristeza.. Maybe you already know some of these bands? - Take care brotherfromanothermother... - enjoy.
This sort of thing must be extremely hard for Gary and Leon, rest his soul. To not have Allen right there next to them for the solo. But it must have been torturous for Allen, to have to watch from the side rather than be up there with them.
@xljeraldlx - 1955!! That's a little too early but I hear what you're sayin. Hey, wait a minute, you're the same kid who wrote that other comment... Happy B'day (betrL8ThnNevr)! - Do you listen to Pink Floyd at all? They are one of my favorites. Also check out Neil Young, I know he feuded with Skynyrd back in the day but he's freakin awesome. Start with some "Neil Young W/Crazy Horse". I think you would like the faster, electric Neil Young tunes but his slower, acoustic tunes are gr8 too!!
even though the band went through changes & disagreement billy stuck with them. you got to give credit to lynyrd skynard. they never changed their formula every album/cd was great. i own gold & platinum and one more (for) from the road the remaster it's a great cd.
@waxonwaxoff14 the Pa Pan Americano tune is older then Freebird. Way older, like the 40's.Your thinking "pop" is a "bad" form of music. Perhaps. But then the Beatles are "pop". So find clarity in your anger, and you will find value in everything.
I just read up on this band and can't believe how such a stupid mistake could be made on a chartered plane flight. And with unbelievably tragic consequences. When you run a chartered plane service, it should be your business to know how far you can go on a tank of gas.
@mcdebi why? There still is one original band member playing. Once he leaves, then it should die. That's what annoys me about The Outlaws. The Outlaws died in 2007 with Huighe Tommasson.
Ed King was the only dude that could lay it down like allen played it in my opinion. His playing on the solo screamed straight practice and pure heart

Ed playing Allen's solo? cool and how appropriate :) props to both

They made this a better place to live.....from Jacksnville, Florida.

So much for no one but Ronnie singing it. Now Gary's even gone and they're still calling themselves Lynryd Skynryd.
Beautiful I love the the Lynyrd Skynyrd band
Ed King does an AWESOME job on the solo......hard to play/mimic Allen's greatness on Freebird but Ed does a damn good job here.
Ed does such an amazing job here it makes me think Allen might have picked up a little of Ed King. Don't forget in the first album "Pronounced" Ed was by far the most experienced in the studio. Of course Allen played the solo note for note every time so he probably wrote the solo.
Ed King, Ed King, Ed King ! Love all of em. So emotional...so real.
@@inquiry7 As the story goes, Allen wrote that solo when he was 17 and stuck it in his back pocket. Finally found a use for it some years later, and the rest is history!
than again God would want a great band to play for Him......
R.I.P lynyrd skynyrd. Hell ya, this is my favourite southern rock band
Possibly the best rendition of Freebird.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD - "FREEBIRD"
Sadly, I recall the exact moment when the radio news carried the report of the "Bird" falling from the Sky...
i agree that this is an excellent version of free bird. it got me teary eyed as well. another version of this song that is great is from the album: one more from the road

Is this Ronnie or Johnny singing, with a recording or something?
wild slow solo lads
@howtodohelp i wis I was born 1940. so I could see where rock starts and as rock evolves
Can anybody tell me where I find Free Bird with Play it Pretty for Amanda?
pro
@mcdebi why? There still is one original band member playing. Once he leaves, then it should die. That's what annoys me about The Outlaws. The Outlaws died in 2007 with Huighe Tommasson.
i agree 100% with you. the only one that should be singing that song is ronnie van zant. that is totaly his song and nobody elese should even sing it.
Garry Rossington also is alive.
I missed the "i cant chchchchange"
Oops....well I guess Johnny changed his mind about never singing this song because he has for the last 20 years.
@frictiondrivebikes HAHA !!
might be some of that last video of allen collins (in wheelchair) with the band....
Yes, they voted him off the tour the following year as it was too expensive to cart him around in his condition.
Love this song, just a classic, and i have done a cover of it, see what u think, i would really appreciate it :)
He said said never have and never will... lol.... Thats not the case anymore...
what is the plastic thing on the guitarists hand?
