I live in New York and study in the city which is sadly known to be a very rude group of people and WE don’t even say shit like that to people handing out flyers. Most people just walk past or say “no thank you”, I’m not sure why the guy had to ask if she’s handing out trash.

You should just receive the thing someone is giving you and say thank you. Then after you walk away you can easily throw it in the trash can if you really don't want it...That way you won't hurt him/her...
