    Hi Renee, never apologize for being wierd, I'm the same way. Yes, she does look like Will Wonka, lol, poor thing! I think in this case, you should leave the integrity of this wonderful old piece in tact, & worth much more that way! Loved all your items, old children's books are so precious. Thanks for the shopping spree!

    Re: the hardened pencil erasers, try rubbing one on rough brick or concrete. Sometimes that will take off a small layer and expose softer eraser underneath. Worth a try.

    I find it amazing just to think that the woman in the photo has no idea of who Willy Wonka is and can't even imagine the concept of that story because of the time period she was from. I think she'd be proud to be part of someone's joy from art. Go for it, Wonka up the photo!

    I am a photographer and my specialty is hand-painting black and white photos. It is an old process. My Grandmother taught me. Seeing that photo, I don't know if the coloring will work for it. Hand-tinted photos tend to be really lightly colored because the paint is transparent. So, the tie would not be bright purple. For vintage photos, I usually suggest that my clients get a copy done of the original, and I color that one, just in case they would end up regretting messing with it. Also, it is really hard to find oval frames,and especially that rounded glass. I wouldn't do anything with that. I share Your love for old paper ephemera and vintage photos. Thanks for sharing your fun picking adventures with us!

    That pancake story was hilarious! I think updating the portrait is fine but people will complain. I use old book covers to make blank journals and people complain. The reality is that there are more old photographs, books, clothes, etc. than people want and folks get sentimental about items they find appealing. I worked in a recycling facility and witnessed the huge amount of unwanted paper items and after 35 years of thrift shopping I can list off items that flood the secondhand stores and end up in the landfill. You do what you want and just allow your skin to get a little thicker.

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen so many books where though worn, the covers are quite lovely... the inside of the book, not so much (if it is even still together). It must have been interesting working for a recycling facility! You probably have some great stories!

    • @rpfree
      @rpfree 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's just reality that no one would want that displayed in their house, even a relative. So, the alternative is that it will be thrown out ... not a good thing. Change it as you want!

    • @sand3882
      @sand3882 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It lasted this long because people kept passing it along. Perhaps the family had no one left to pass it on to.

    • @catgreen5620
      @catgreen5620 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sand3882 That'll be the case when I die. No family after me so items will just be at a thrift store, estate sale or dump. Once I'm dead I wouldn't care if someone felt I had a resemblance to the wizard of chocolate and found humor in it.

    Whether to use or save a photo really depends on whatever culture norms you were taught as a child. Some cultures consider photos sacred that capture the person essense or soul when photographed. Others view them as entertainment and more of a here and now, not a collectible. If you are worried what other's think in here (and you do as you have a sensitive soul).... then let them buy the framed photo from you if they want to save it. Have a save the photo auction sale in Ebay or something like that and those who are complaining about not altering the photo can buy it from you.
    Now for my personal thoughts concerning the photo, if you had not bought the photo, it would have gone in the trash. I have worked at many auctions and most often items that are not bought end up in the trash. By altering it into something more interesting, you are saving an item from the landfill. I am an upcycle artist and I create art out of discarded items 99% of the time. I see value in what Renee wants to do with the photo and I am supporting her project.

    I just loooove how we all have an opinion. LOL. It’s probably 50/50 or maybe 60/40 about leaving the integrity of the photos as is. That to me is HILARIOUS!!!! I love the frame. The picture however is well something only her mother could love. I’m only teasing. I really liked the persons idea about putting tiny lights behind the eyes and hanging it for Halloween. I bet the eyes would follow you whichever way you walked by it. LOL. Now that’s spooky!! Thank you for sharing!!! Oh PS I LOOOVVVEEEE that you still mention “buttons”. If concerned about spoiling the picture, in order to transform it, perhaps could put paint on the glass or a second layer of glass or plastic. Heavyweight plastic (not shrink wrap) that is clear and chemical resistant so as not to leak. Or, photo copy the picture, and decorate it. Truthfully, it's yours, you bought it fair and square, do what you wish & haters be dammed, as the saying goes. Good auction!

    If you want to turn that picture into Willie Wonka without "Ruining" it, get some glass paint and paint the outside of the glass.
    Sometimes when the pencil eraser gets hard, you can fix it by using an emery board on it by sanding off the top layer of the eraser.

    On the photo - you should be able to find someone who can scan it and make a photo-quality print. Then you can mark up the print. If you want to get really sophisticated you can photoshop the actual clothes from a photo of Gene Wilder - or you can draw, do multimedia (fabric, etc.) or anything you want. Shouldn't be too expensive to get a print - and the original will be preserved.

      Just as a sampling of other versions ... “The Runaway Pancake”, The Runaway Wok”, “The Cajun Gingerbread Boy”, “The Matzo Ball Boy”, Clay Boy”, “The Gingerbread Girl”, “The Gingerbread Baby”, “The Runaway Tortilla”, “The Gingerbread Cowboy” and soooo many others! All delightful!
      I really enjoy your channel, Renee! Your calm, yet enthusiastic presence is refreshing and wonderful to watch! I collect old: valentines, children’s books, children’s greeting cards, postcards and all kind of other irresistible ephemera. I feel you are a kindred spirit! Thanks for sharing!

    The character invented by Roald Dahl, or Willard Wonka, that you see in the photo of the Lady is really nice as an image. If you want to make her look like the character, without spoiling the photo, you can make a copy with a scanner and edit it with photo editing software. Just an idea that I'm sure you've already had or others have already thought or written about it, but it's just for a chat, nothing more.

    Love going to the auction with you :-) it’s almost as good as being there myself. Also quick note - I didn’t think there was anything strange about the way you say “ buttons”. I guess because I am also from Jersey and so I say it the same way 😉

    This word is over used but awesome purchases.
    My opinion, since you asked, leave the portrait as is.

    It’s your picture , do whatever makes you happy you paid for it , if it gives you joy and you can have a laugh ,go for it bu it’s funny that you save bags of old stained clothes , little figurines , ugly hallowing devils masks ,and you find this lady or man that at one time he/ or she took that foto thinking it was pretty.lm disappointed l know most of the comments say to go for it so go for it I just hope that in fifty years or one hundred years your picture comes out and a future paper and moose decides to have a laugh at it. Before I wrote this comment l asked my teenager kids what did they think about this video they said “that’s massed up” the young one said “ that lady is mean “ so I’m not the only one to feel this way oh and I don’t answer to heaters but if someone’s feels the same way let me know maby I’m wright I just know that I don’t like to make fun of people dead or alive
