yes, VERY offended by adding ice and lemon to Flensburger, one of my all time fave beers! (when i lived in south Thailand 8 1/2 yrs, everybody put ice in their beers, but of course Thai beer is sh*t compared to German beer!!!) my all time fave beers, in no exact order: Noche Buena (Mexico) Harp Lager (Ireland) Leffe (Belgium), Lao Beer (Laos) Turner (Australia) Flensburger, München Hell, Spaten (Germany, along w/so many other great German beers whose names i can't recall); there was one Danish beer i liked when i lived in CPH, but forget the name... oh, thumbs up, of course, #sixtyeight (my six key is kaput)

In Germany my favorite one is Kloster Andechs Doppel Bock Dunkel. I live in Belgium. The beers in Belgium are just on another level. There is more beer types than just Pilsner and Weissbier. Try a Berlgian Kriek. Made with Cherries. Great in the summer. Or a Trappist or .... Belgium has every type (not brand) of beer and then many others.

So as a homebrewer, I have some explanations for you. For the Weissbier (or Hefeweizen), the reason you taste banana is because the yeast used to make it does actually produce the same ester that is found in bananas. It also produces a phenol found in cloves. You can actually change the balance between those two flavors by regulating the temperature at which it ferments.

Bitburger is my all-time favorite. When I was in the USAF stationed in Germany6 (Spangdahlem) I lived in Bitburg base housing. From my 4th floor apartment, the Bitburger brewery was straight ahead about ~1Km away. It was the go-to for all of my co-workers and I still find it the US today. The Becks in the US is NOT from Germany but is brewed in St. Louis. The Paulaner Weissbier is the "Naturtub" style which I believe is "natural" and unfiltered. This is one of my favorites. On my most recent visit to Germany (2021 to Miltenberg) I tried the Flensburger Pils which I also enjoyed. The Jever is a good pils. I also first tried it at Spangdahlem as the German Luftwaffe at Jever was a Sister squadron to our unit. Overalll, my favorites are generally Pils. Two smaller breweries I tried were Schappesepel in Aschaffenburg & Faust in Miltenberg. Give them a try. Prost!

I've had most of those beers, but some of the Pilsners I haven't been able to get locally (South Africa) before. Jever is good, bitter hop profile. Reminds me of Holsten. Franziskaner, Erdinger, Paulaner are great variations of weiss beers and extremely popular here. There are several local variations that are excellent. Fruity, malty and the banana is there. I would be happy with any of the above beers in a stein with Eisbein and bratkartofflen (extremely crispy).

My host family that evening served the local beer with a dinner of Leberkäse, followed by after dinner conversation with the local Rhein Wein. I had to cut them off at one point, stating that I had to play a concert that evening. LOL. I was 18 at the time. After that, I searched for Weihenstephaner in the US for many years, and finally found it….almost 20 years later. It’s still one of my favorite German beers.

We went to an amusement park as a big group and split like two Beck's beers there as students, hiding it from our teachers, and then since I was based in the Dortmund area, Warsteiner was just a very popular beer at parties.
And I can't really recall any bad beers at all during any of my visits to Germany. It's just that nothing really stands out to me, except for the Weißbiers like Paulaner, Erdinger, Franziskaner, and Weihenstephaner.

I was in the Army stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base 1985 to 1989 . The best beer I ever had was in the town below the Neuschwanstein Castle and it was a dark beer . Unfortunately , I only had it the one time , but it was the best . At Ramstein , we drank Parkbrau from Pirmasens , West Germany , which is now just called Park . When I was there they made an Export , Pils , Pirminator and Weizen . They now make 13 different kinds ! A friend of mine who married a German lady , goes back every year and his mother in law retired from the Parkbrau brewery . He brings back a rack or 2 every time and a couple years ago he had a friend that came to Las Vegas for a bowling tournament , bring me a Park Pils . It was wonderful ! I haven't had one since 1991 and they don't export to the United States . The next time you are in the Kaiserslautern , Ramstein , Pirmasens area you should try some of the others and maybe do a video . 13 different beers from the same maker could be fun and the Pirminator is 6.9% . The others are 4.8% .

Next video should be a comparison of Düsseldorf's different house breweries (Füchschen, Uerige, Schlüssel, Schumacher, Kürzer and Gulasch Alt).
Hard to say what's my favorite beer, I like a lot of different brands. But if I could choose I'd always drink a dark one, maybe a porter or a stout.
And a recommendation if you're beer lovers in Düsseldorf: there's a great place in Oberbilk called 'Britische Biere', they're a craft beer store and they always have some draft beers there as well, plus hundreds of different craft beers from all over the world in their fridges (and also different ciders and gins). It's a beer drinker's paradise.

So you two basically tested two wheat beers, an Alt and a lot of Pilseners - which by the way originated in Pilzen, a Czech city. Funny how Diana mentioned Bud in the beginning, since Budweiser is a beer originally from Budweis - also a Czech city. (Yeah, one of the big American beers isn't actually American at all. And yeah, the Czech top Germany when it comes to beer consumption and also have a rather rich beer history.)
Anyway, I'd suggest more diversity next time. Kölsch, Helles or Export, Lager, Bock, Landbier, Kellerbier, Schwarzbier. I could recommend a few though not all might be available everywhere.
And also interesting to know: most beers at least throughout Europe of which many advertise with some kind of regional connection or so (Jever standing out in this matter, for example) - they're almost exclusively owned by one huge company (similar to Nestlé or Mondelēz): Anheuser-Busch InBev

Well, no. The American Budweiser just stole the name. But they aren't the same things at all. Yes, the Czech version is the best and obviously the original. But you would be very disappointed if you ordered a Budweiser in the US expecting the Czech version. And that American brewery was actually based in St. Louis, Missouri. But it was purchased by a big corporation based in Belgium, so it's also not "originally Belgian" either, as the commentor below seems to be implying.

I am sorry , but Pils beer being „Czech“ in origin is not entirely correct for 2 reasons .
1: a lot of the cities in Bohemia had a large German-Austrian population , sometimes actually a majority . This included Pilsen and Budweis ( my grandpa being born in the latter ) .
2: the history of The „Pilsener“ brewstyle directly involves a Bavarian brewmaster called Joseph Groll, who was called to Pilsen by the owner of their local brewery ( another German ) to help improve the quality of their beer .
So the Pils is actually a Bavarian-Bohemian cooperation .

The problem with the bottled beers is, that there are a lot of light sensitive molecules, which gives the flavour/ aroma. So if between the brevery and you, anyone stored it badly, than the flavour and odor will get worse and worse. That is why they use green or brown bottles and no normal transparent glass, they try to protect the beer inside against light. You can try it at home with 2 bottles easily, and feel the difference. It is not possible to tell after one try, whether the beer itself is not good or just was stored badly.

Well I am from Belgium so
OF COURSE I love our beers.
    If you visit our country,
I think you need to try:
    1. Duvel, which is our dialect for the word "duivel" = Teufel (so kind of like saying "Tüfl" and saying/shouting it really angry 🤣).
    2. Hoegaarden (a weissbier with coriander, I love it and all the grannies 👵 drink it for some reason, they claim it doesn't give such a big headache 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️).
    3. Rodenbach. (Roten Bach, Red Bach) I love it, but it's brewed in the West part of Flanders so you would most likely need to go to the belgian coast to try it, 🌊⛵it's tradition, they serve it with shrimp (which you peel yourself)
There are plenty of beers here, but I would leave pils up to the Czech people. 🍺

I tried a lot of different types, and learned early that I didn’t really like Pilsner style beer, but loved Weissbier. Out of the Weissbier, I preferred Kristal Weissen. It’s not as heavy as a Hefe or Dunkel. Locally I can find Paulaner, Erdinger, and my current go to Weissbier……Franziskaner.

I am so NOT offended! It’s strange that in the US, almost all beers are “lager” beers. Translation - not too strong tasting, not too hoppy. I get the feeling you probably don’t like overly hopped beers. The craft beer scene in the US has gone hop crazy - resulting in some nearly undrinkable versions. I see some Becks and Paulaners around. Used to be Lowenbrau but I think it was coopted and americanized in the 80s. And the beer scene in the US is being crowded by alcopops like hard seltzer and lemonades- a bit like Radlers in Germany only with every conceivable flavor of fruit.

I tried to be offended, but I couldn't. You're too adorable. A toast from me with my just opened Scheyern Kloster-Weisse. By the way, the Perlenbacher beer sold in Lidl is made by Oettinger, so it's probably the same thing.

    • @sefribu4159
      @sefribu4159 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Weirdly enough about ALL types of Oettinger Bier are quite tasty... Schwarzbier, Weizen (even the one without alcohol...) Oettinger Alkoholfrei, that crazy half-alcohol Schankbier they have... And then there´s Oettinger Pils, which tastes like "Omma unterm Arm" (licking grandma´s armpit), as people tend to say. It´s the real Pennerglück and devastatingly horrible. All the others... quite yummy.
And what Phil called a handgrenade is a "Bügelflasche" or "Ploppflasche". Handgrenade probably means the stubby, 0.5 and 0.3l Maurerbomben, mostly sold by Veltins and a few other breweries.
But generally you shouldn´t compare different kinds of beer against each other. Different Pilsener against each other and different Weißbiere against each other would make much more sense.
And if you really, absolutely feel like drinking something that will help you puke: Try Nürnberger Rauchbier. But don´t tell me I didn´t warn you again doing so! 🤣
