I recall comnents from leading scientists as standing on the shoulders of giants, aka Isaac Newton. Fan productions are the greatest homage to TOS. I find them all a delight to watch.
There is an STTNG novel called Vendetta (non canonical please note and very minor spoilers) that indicates this device may be from not only outside the galaxy, but is possibly a Preserver weapon. A "Borg Killer" similar to the Federation's USS Defiant, but FAR larger and immensely more powerful. And also there is a second version of this weapon depicted in the novel. It is much larger, has the same "maw" as the Doomsday weapon, but falls off at a 90 degree angle into a gigantic spiral spinning downward. Perhaps either a newer, more powerful version, or simply a different design whose aim was for a more formidable threat than the previous version could handle. Also in the novel, the second version seems to require an organic "pilot" to make it work correctly. The first version was completely automated by all readings. This implies that the berserker nature of the first weapon was perhaps in error and a more advanced, more precise version was created. But it was not launched in time. Perhaps for the best, as if the Borg were somehow able to take control of this monster, then the devastation would have been far worse for the galaxy at large. Also, it has been potentially speculated that perhaps the weapon may have been an advanced scouting weapon sent by the Kelvan Empire in the Andromeda Galaxy, but there is little to no evidence to support the claim. However due to their aggressive nature and highly advanced technology, it still remains a remote possibility. If Rojan was still around, perhaps he would know if Kelva sent this.

Thank you for putting a very intersting story to one of my Detroyat class starships. I had the USS Niantic presumed destroyed by the doomsday weapon the USS Constellation encountered, as this ship was patrolling in neighbouring vicinties/sectors that the USS Constellation was patrolling in and around in when SHE encountered the doomsday machine in that episode. Neither ship knew what happened to each other and the Niantic went months without any contact with neighbouring Federation planets OR with any Star Bases, space stations or even Star Fleet Command, which led to an investigation by Star Fleet Command that the USS Niantic and her crew were assumed destroyed by the very same doomsday machine the USS Constellation encountered and was destoyed by. No survivors ever found or ever reported in. Very nice story.
Good video and theory. It would explain how Ceti Alpha 6 exploded and how Ceti Alpha 5 orbit shifted. It also explains why Reliant didn't detect signs of Ceti Alpha 6 exploding. The planet killer could have blown up Ceti Alpha 6 into rubble and consumed most of the pieces for fuel leaving the remnants to either float in space or collide with ceti Alpha 5.

Cool! I like how you've tied together two prominent storylines with this film. Your solution to the Ceti-Alpha question is creative and realistic according to previous Star Trek world building. Decker still needs a shower and shave.
Awesome fan theory! It explains how Ceti Alpha 6 could explode, and how Ceti Alpha 5 could have shifted orbit. It does leave in place one major nitpick about Star Trek II, however, that the Reliant and her crew did not detect evidence of this cataclysm, either in the form of debris or odd orbital shifts throughout the system. That said, your story is an elegant explanation as to how a planet could just explode suddenly. Also, cool ship design, and a wonderful addition to my head canon.
Another thing to consider was that USS Relient had been assigned to support Project Genesis, and the crew were obviously growing tired of searching for a lifeless world for a planetary scale test. The Relient could have been so focused on finding a viable candidate world, that they may have disregarded evidence of a cataclysm, that they would have determined to have happened years earlier, as not of immediate concern. The focus was to vet Ceti Alpha VI for the Genesis team. And since even a successful test wouldn't mean immediate colonization of Ceti Alpha VI, the Relient would have had plenty of time for a more extensive investigation of the system's history which could have led to referencing the logs of the USS Enterprise, USS Constellation, and the USS Niantic.
In case you were wondering, the ship is "detroyat class" although it is possibly a variant of this, because the saucer does not have the main weapon that you are having.
It's an interesting idea to have the Planet Killer be the reason Ceti Alpha 6 was destroyed thus laying waste to Ceti Alpha 5 Where Khan, Lt. McGivers and the Superhumans had colonized. However, the Planet Killer cut planets up to use them as fuel and not to just destroy them and leave. So it would have remained to fuel up with the rubble from Ceti Alpha 6. Also, it would have likely continued cut up and consume the remaining planets in the Ceti Alpha system true to form as depicted in "The Doomsday Machine".
The idea was that Niantic was able to draw the planet killer far enough to leave the system. It might be a stretch, but that was why they stayed to fight it.

I've read those awesome novels. Part of the impetus to make the doomed planet Ceti Alpha VI was because the explanation for its destruction wasn't revealed in the novels or anywhere else, that and Spock's line, "Nothing but debris where we charted several star systems last year." Last year being season 1 of TOS and the Enterprise having been in the region. Kind of works. :)
I would like to see this remastered by intercutting live action with the model work. It could be scripted in a manner to have fan actors playing the subordinates of Kahn and Commodore Decker. It would be nice to see the escape pods also. 😁 As it appears now, it is a well told story. It is amazing what some fans have done with no or little budgets.👍
I have a new theory as to why nobody noticed that Ceti Alpha VI exploded. The system presumably has an asteroid belt between Ceti Alpha V and VI... Maybe the Shockwave of Ceti Alpha VI's explosion somehow shifted a fair portion of the asteroids to where Ceti Alpha V used to be and combined into a rough planet sized rock..... It read as a planetary mass on sensors. Unless a ship got close enough to actually see the planet... It wouldn't appear to be out of the ordinary. Meanwhile Ceti Alpha V somehow shifted to where Ceti Alpha VI used to be. The Ceti Alpha System is far enough from Federation space that it would be extremely unlikely that anyone would report the change. There may have even been a law similar to the one that made travel to Talos IV or Genesis illegal. Only authorized Federation Starships could actually enter the system as Starfleet didn't want to risk another Space Seed incident. Kirk couldn't check on the Colony as he was never given the chance to. He probably thought about it but couldn't get the clearance. After a while he just forgot about it lol.
I'm an SFB Player. If i encountered a Planet Killer like that Heavy Destroyer did, I wouldn't have kept trying to fight it. I would have stayed out of range of its weapon and called for help.
That's what Kirk wanted to do in the first place. Kirk wanted to get out of its subspace jamming range to warn Starfleet, but Commadore Decker forced his hand.
Nice way to tie in two of my favorite TOS episodes. True the Khan and Decker scenes were rough but you did the best you could.with what you had and I applaud the effort. My only real gripe is more of a nitpick. The planet killer tends to smash entire solar systems rather than cherry pick individual planets. I would have expected it to move on to Ceti Alpha 5, then 4, 3, 2 and so on. Here it just moves on after consuming one planet. Maybe it only needed enough fuel to top off the tank? I don't know. There are number of reasons it could have for deviating from its usual course of action. No need to let that get in the way of.a good story.
Starfleet must have a wonderful selection process at Starfleet Academy so as to find SOOO many people willing to die in the line of duty and not to seek out new ideas and new solutions to deadly problems. I am reminded of Tuvok's friend Dmitri who willingly ignored a fateful warning and died from an exploding console. Insane and stupid.
You done did a Masterpiece of story telling!! I Loved every second of it! Please, I beg of You. Keep up the great works! The way you tied it into Star Trek 2 was so Amazing!!!
Outstanding video! Love the way you tie in the Khan angle with a logical theory about Ceti Alpha 6. Another interesting point about the Doomsday Machine was brought up in the STTNG fan novel, Vendetta: TOS theorized that it came from another galaxy and used planets as fuel...except there aren't planets in the voids between galaxies, that we know of...so no fuel. Which would make its origins even more mysterious.
also in the STnG novel Vendetta we learn that the Doomsday Machine was built by a now extinct advanced alien race specifically to combat the Borg. Good novel.
If the Doomsday Machine was meant to fight the Borg, then how old is the Borg given the composition, size and power of the titular weapon? Producing such a destroyer would necessiate enormous amounts of despair, technology, power and personnel not to forget unrelenting determination and will.
I was 16 when TOS came on TV, and I fell in love: I've been in love with Star Trek ever since. (until recently...) Its not only Wonderful that a new generation of youngsters have taken ST to heart, but I am also Proud of you for this episode. Long life and prosperity.
An interesting ship design, like a blend of the Anton class cruiser and the Antares class freighter. Also an interesting way to tie the two episodes together.
In case you were wondering, the ship is "detroyat class" although it is possibly a variant of this, because the saucer does not have the main weapon that you are having.
Love this and send a huge thanks to the creators! As all TOS fans over analyze everything I of course am no different, a warp core breach created a smaller blast than an impulse engine on overload? Or maybe the damage inflicted then allowed the constellations explosion to destroy it? I did love the explanation for SETI Alphas planet explosion, great way to tie stories together!! Seems like Star Fleet would of been investigating the loss of this ship in that area long before Chekov got there and blundered in to Kahn though 😅
The warp core breach was probably not as explosive due to safety mechanisms in place to mitigate damage in the event of an accident, while the intentional detonation of impulse engines was set up for maximum destructive output. I did intend for this to cause enough damage to make the Constellation's later destruction to be effective. Had the Niantic not been destroyed as it was, would the Constellation's destruction have succeeded? It's just a way to make the PK seem even more deadly. I'm glad you enjoyed the film. :)
Very nice prequel plot ! I like it ! One problem, some of the music clips were played at inappropriate moments - I realise this is difficult when you only have a limited selection though.
Interesting way to tie-in two unrelated stories. I always wondered how a neighboring stable planet could blowup by itself and cause the catastrophe on CetiAlpha 5 we are told about in Star Trek II. This gives us a plausible explanation. WELL DONE!!!
the only nit-pick I have with this story is Antimatter...the Doomsday Machine somehow made Antimatter inert at close range and so Warp Drive for most Starship's would be disabled (The Enterprise and Constellation suffered this....Fusion Powered ships would be unaffected so Romulan BoP etc) and Photon Torpedoes would be useless too (Hence why only phasers and the impulse reactors on overload were used in the Original Episode as weapons) I do like the tie-in with Ceti Alpha VI....it fits nicely
That's a good point. Perhaps in this case, because it was unable to feed on the planet due to the Niantic showing up, and having just arrived in the galaxy, it was unable to do the antimatter drain yet. Since it had just awakened from being dormant for a long, long, period of time, it was low on reserves, and also why Niantic was able to take so many shots. Your point is excellent, and it takes some finagling to figure that out, LOL. :) As for photon torpedoes, IMHO, in TOS, they were never explained to be antimatter warheads. They were once referred to as "Proximity Blast" phasers in "Balance of Terror." So I never thought of them as antimatter warheads until their redesign in ST:TMP and beyond. There're a few other differences too. When the Niantic explodes, it didn't destroy the PK. My thoughts on that were that it was less damaged at that point from battle. Perhaps if they hadn't detonated inside the PK first, the Constellation's destruction would not have been enough to finally destroy it...? Makes it that much scarier later. :) Thank you for the thoughtful comments. I hope that my rationale makes it a workable explanation.
Also, your point about the antimatter being "deactivated somehow" can answer the question about why the warp core explosion didn't do more damage. It was weakened by the recharging planet killer!
First, not bad. Second, I always wondered why no one on the Constellation OR the Enterprise fired any photon torpedoes into the machine. Thirdly, Khan is amazingly calm watching the neighboring planet blow up.
@@jyralnadreth4442 I may have answered this elsewhere, but the photon torpedo in TOS was never said to be antimatter. It was referred to in "Balance of Terror" as a 'proximity blast phaser' in fact, which I always took to be just a setting, and too much of a mouthful so they started calling that setting "Photon Torpedo" later. They were not encased in shells like the film version. Doesn't mean you're wrong, just that it was vague enough that it was worth doing a shot down the throat of the PK, especially since they didn't try it in the canon episode. Why not see what it would do? That's what I was thinking. Didn't do much, dimmed the lights a little, that was it.
Excellent story and explanation of the destruction of Ceti Alpha 6. One thing though. Phasers of this era in the Star Trek universe are blue and not red.
In the Star Trek Remastered version, that's correct. BUT in the original, the phasers were red. tos.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/2x06/doomsdaymachine_288.jpg My attempt to replicate the Planet Killer was based more on the TOS original version than the remastered version, and IMHO, the remastered changes are good and bad. I liked the phasers being red in the early seasons, and presumed there was an upgrade to them that happened soon after this episode, as the rest of season 2 used blue phasers. Some ships would have red, with older weapons systems still installed, and others would have the new higher energy phasers (blue) as refits occurred. Then... the movies turn them red again. Go figure. LOL
Mostly because the PK had just arrived in the Galaxy and the Niantic interrupted its breakfast. It was very hungry and just woke up after millennia crossing intergalactic space. :) Still too weak to handle a starship easily after blowing up Ceti Alpha VI and not feeding yet.
@SpaceAce100 no, they're made of tritanium and duranium which are fictional supermaterials. But it doesn't fully apply to this situation anyway because the shields were able to block most of the energy
Wow beautiful but sad story. Sometimes helping others has a high personal price for us to pay but it doesn't make it less worthy even if it feels like a lost cause.

In this scenario I would have maneuvered around and above the doomsday machine and locked on with tractor beams riding it like a remora stays with a shark. This would buy time to get all systems back on line.
As Doomsday Machine is programmed to go after objects of a certain size within a certain distance of it, this would keep it going around in circles till fuel is depleted.
So how would the Reliant not know Ceti Alpha VI blew up? With all the sophisticated technology at Starfleet’s disposal it seems odd Checkov and Terrell wouldn’t know what happened in the Ceti Alpha system. The Wrath of Khan is a great movie, but I always wondered about this.
Most excellent! Great nods and tie-ins to established Trek lore, while at the same time, adding to the larger story! Fantastic spfx, and production designs. Congrats to all involved! Well done, indeed.
Fantastic use of existing lore to explain what happened to Khan and crew. Although I think you got acetic Alpha V and VI backwards. Khan was left on acetic Alpha VI. Crit Alpha V was destroyed. The Reliant went to VI thinking it was V.
One point... if the Doomsday Machine was destroyed by an overloaded and exploding impulse engine (what was it, 97 megatons give or take), why wouldn't a warp core collapse and the resulting matter/antimatter explosion also destroy it? The latter has to be far more powerful than the former.
The giant cornucopia of death.... My mom had one on her buffet table ,during the show, I thought fruit was going to roll out

Kirk couldn't check on the Colony as he was never given the chance to. He probably thought about it but couldn't get the clearance. After a while he just forgot about it lol.
It was never Kirk's job to "babysit" the new colony, it was Starfleet's duty and they fumbled it.
I'm an SFB Player. If i encountered a Planet Killer like that Heavy Destroyer did, I wouldn't have kept trying to fight it. I would have stayed out of range of its weapon and called for help.
As would I. A single ship cannot combat it. The Niantic's captain made an unfortunately bad decision.
That's what Kirk wanted to do in the first place. Kirk wanted to get out of its subspace jamming range to warn Starfleet, but Commadore Decker forced his hand.
@@superboats2 that’s why Decker got his ship shot out from under him
@@matthewcaughey8898 At least Decker gave Kirk an idea when Decker rammed a shuttle "Right down its throat".
The Niantic did their best to lure it away, and apparently succeeded, at the cost of their lives.
Nice little story. I like how it ties in several Star Trek elements from the series and movies.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I love Doomsday Machine it's one of my favorite Star Trek episodes. Awesome and thanks for posting this it was cool.
Ditto.
You done did a Masterpiece of story telling!! I Loved every second of it! Please, I beg of You. Keep up the great works! The way you tied it into Star Trek 2 was so Amazing!!!
Thank you! I'm working on more films! :) This always makes my day!
Might have been better if they'd just left Khan and his followers to their fate. To quote Kirk from Star Trek 6: Let them die!
The music, sound effects, pacing. OG style Trek just makes happy
I was always amused by that giant "ham in space"!
Actually, it was a cement coated windsock. LOL
ah planets don't just BLOW up unless they have a wee bit of help
I was 16 when TOS came on TV, and I fell in love: I've been in love with Star Trek ever since. (until recently...) Its not only Wonderful that a new generation of youngsters have taken ST to heart, but I am also Proud of you for this episode. Long life and prosperity.
Thank you!
Same here, I was a TOS baby in the ’60s and never stopped loving pretty much all of Trek.
Got you beat, I was seven.
those bits of planet would really ruin Khan's afternoon.... that would make chixulub look like a teaparty
"Everything was laid waste."
Let's make sure history never forgets, the name NIANTIC! 7:20 Brave Crew and Ship!
Great tie-in, explained ST TWOK.
Don’t you think I know that! Fun episode William Windom make it work!
Very ambitious, but an excellent story.
Loved how it addressed that weird oddity from ST2 about Ceti Alpha 6
That was actually very good. Thank you so much for doing this. Far better than what they make nowadays.
Well that was sad. That brave crew lost and I really liked their ship.
That is one scary Khan...
Great show! I do believe I have a kit of the U.S.S.Niantic. If I remember, I got it from Starships Modeler Store.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I had no idea anyone made a physical model kit. Pretty cool!
I've wondered if the reason it's bent out of shape is because of the numerous encounters of civilization it fought as it consumed planets.
I'd bet that is a fair assumption. :)
Such 60's style campiness...... 🙃
Very nice prequel plot ! I like it !
One problem, some of the music clips were played at inappropriate moments - I realise this is difficult when you only have a limited selection though.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Brings back memories, of good old Star Trek !!!!
When Matt Decker speaks it reminds me of the old Cluch Cargo cartoon. Clever how you tied the two stories together.
Not Khan ?
Clutch Cargo looked much more realistic.
The Niantic looks cool...
Looks like an ancestor of the Centaur
Interesting way to tie-in two unrelated stories. I always wondered how a neighboring stable planet could blowup by itself and cause the catastrophe on CetiAlpha 5 we are told about in Star Trek II. This gives us a plausible explanation. WELL DONE!!!
Everyone knows Ceti Alpha 6 exploded due to global warming. Nice try though.
LOL! I'd say it warmed up a lot under an anti-proton beam. :)
the only nit-pick I have with this story is Antimatter...the Doomsday Machine somehow made Antimatter inert at close range and so Warp Drive for most Starship's would be disabled (The Enterprise and Constellation suffered this....Fusion Powered ships would be unaffected so Romulan BoP etc) and Photon Torpedoes would be useless too (Hence why only phasers and the impulse reactors on overload were used in the Original Episode as weapons) I do like the tie-in with Ceti Alpha VI....it fits nicely
Thank you for the thoughtful comments. I hope that my rationale makes it a workable explanation.
Also, your point about the antimatter being "deactivated somehow" can answer the question about why the warp core explosion didn't do more damage. It was weakened by the recharging planet killer!
Really well done! Thank you for letting me be a part of it all! A great tie-in to one of the top episodes of TOS.
Thank you for being part of it, Curt! :)
Hear-Hear! And BTW, thank you for "Logical Thinking With Mr. Spock" I'm a big fan of this series. :)
First, not bad. Second, I always wondered why no one on the Constellation OR the Enterprise fired any photon torpedoes into the machine. Thirdly, Khan is amazingly calm watching the neighboring planet blow up.
The Doomsday Machine neutralised Antimatter aboard ships within close range...warp drive and torpedoes would be useless
Very interesting take on two of my favorite TOS episodes! Well Done!
Great work!
Thanks for your interesting episode... more please 👏👏👏🤝✨☮️👍
More to come. :)
Excellent story and explanation of the destruction of Ceti Alpha 6. One thing though. Phasers of this era in the Star Trek universe are blue and not red.
In the Star Trek Remastered version, that's correct. BUT in the original, the phasers were red. tos.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/2x06/doomsdaymachine_288.jpg
My attempt to replicate the Planet Killer was based more on the TOS original version than the remastered version, and IMHO, the remastered changes are good and bad. Go figure. LOL
@@Raymar3d Agreed.
A very outlook of what happened before capt kirk got there.
The fact that the starship survived that many planet busting shots is really impressive...
Edge of the beam
They were not at the focal point of the beam but in the widest part so energy less concentrated...a bit like a magnifying glass...
Mostly because the PK had just arrived in the Galaxy and the Niantic interrupted its breakfast. It was very hungry and just woke up after millennia crossing intergalactic space. :) Still too weak to handle a starship easily after blowing up Ceti Alpha VI and not feeding yet.
@SpaceAce100 Saladin will be part of many upcoming films. :)
@SpaceAce100 no, they're made of tritanium and duranium which are fictional supermaterials. But it doesn't fully apply to this situation anyway because the shields were able to block most of the energy
It's a giant cornucopia from Hell, damnit!!!
Wow beautiful but sad story. Sometimes helping others has a high personal price for us to pay but it doesn't make it less worthy even if it feels like a lost cause.
I thank you for that. To quote Captain Picard, "It is possible to do everything right, and still lose."
@@Raymar3d It emphasizes how captains can make poor decisions. Decker and this captain choosing to engage while being so thoroughly outmatched show that misjudging a situation will always be a factor.
Along with ignoring recommendations to evacuate/retreat while there is still time: this captain and Grand Moff Tarkin. ;-)
"What do you say? It’s useless?...I know, ah yes! But one cannot fight hoping only for success! No! No: it’s still more sweet if it’s all in vain!" (Act V, "Cyrano de Bergerac," Edmond Rostand)
So THATS how Ceti Alpha 6 got destroyed! I’ll buy that!
🖖😎👍Very nicely well done and very well executed in every way shape and form and detail provided with a very nicely told story line to it as well, A job very wonderfully nicely done indeed!,👌.
Thank you! :)
This is freakin' awesome.
Thanks! You just made my day!
Ace , much appreciated.
Well done with the music, the tie in with established Trek Lore, fantastic job all around!
Thanks, William. :)
Great work
Thank you!
Destroyat Class. That's not a misspelling for those who don't know. Heavy destroyer. You get an upvote just for making such a unique choice of ship!
Actually, it's spelled "Detroyat", but excellent eye and recognition of this heavy destroyer class! LLAP! 🖖
@@rickhunter6516 Yeah...typo. Human error. Can't blame autocorrect on this one. LLAP Brother.
Die Vorgeschichte zu "Planetenkiller" oder "the doomsday machine" 👍
Very good. Great take on why Ceta Alpha 6 was destroyed.
In this scenario I would have maneuvered around and above the doomsday machine and locked on with tractor beams riding it like a remora stays with a shark. This would buy time to get all systems back on line.
Interesting tactic. I like it. :)
@@Raymar3d Ride'm Cowboy!
As Doomsday Machine is programmed to go after objects of a certain size within a certain distance of it, this would keep it going around in circles till fuel is depleted.
Decker is being very Decker today.
🤣
I totally love the tie in to known Trek lore.
Love the design of the Niantic, and a great explaination on why Ceti Alpha 5 was not where it was supposed to be. 👍
The Niantic is a Detroyat Class Starship.....
@@jyralnadreth4442 I can't say I am familiar with that class of ship but it looks great.
It's a good question. Human error? Khan did say the orbit of Ceti Alpha 5 shifted, so perhaps that is the reason.
Raymar3d They should still have noticed the explosion of a planet. TWOK is a great movie; it’s just always been a question.
Interesting take here!
Fun! Great blend of two episodes.
Gotta say... I loved it... Cheesy yes but right on for the 60s!!! You guys rock
One thing is for sure, in the future there will still be terrible mics out there lol
Most excellent! Great nods and tie-ins to established Trek lore, while at the same time, adding to the larger story! Fantastic spfx, and production designs. Congrats to all involved! Well done, indeed.
Thank you my friend. :)
Agreed! It also shows that the full story of what happened to the Constellation is a story worth telling even if we already know the sad ending.
Thanks for filling in some blanks!
Explains how Ceti Alpha V shifted orbit.
I actually like all the tie ins....very clever....
good job with this. good to see real star trek again
Fantastic use of existing lore to explain what happened to Khan and crew. Although I think you got acetic Alpha V and VI backwards. Khan was left on acetic Alpha VI. Crit Alpha V was destroyed. The Reliant went to VI thinking it was V.
Actually, Khan says, "THIS IS CETI ALPHA FIVE! Ceti Alpha Six exploded, six months after we were left here."
i wonder why they never did a followup to this in the TNG era
There is a novel by Peter David titled "Vendetta" that does carry it into the TNG era. Good book. :)
One point... if the Doomsday Machine was destroyed by an overloaded and exploding impulse engine (what was it, 97 megatons give or take), why wouldn't a warp core collapse and the resulting matter/antimatter explosion also destroy it? The latter has to be far more powerful than the former.
Kirk was fortunate the Niantic had already done some damage. :)
USS Niantic? I see what you did there! ;oP
Solid idea.
I liked this. Interesting idea.
Thank you!
i like that starship design!
Terrific fun! Well done!
