But you know even still, just be skeptical of everything anyway, obviously we don't have to blindly trust or agree with people that we happen to "like" or trust in certain circumstances. We do after all live in late-stage capitalist hellscape and so all that is solid is indeed melting into bullshit, and there's no vaccine to become immune from the pure ideology *_*sniff_** and inherent social fracturing it effectively demands of us all to merely survive.

All fixed, fast-frozen relations, with their train of ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions, are swept away, all new-formed ones become antiquated before they can ossify. Aspirating before injecting the vaccines would be a good precaution. Shaun gets it s wee bit wrong... CDC and WHO (and NIH) don't actually recommend against it. They merely say it isn't necessary. There's some history and such involved with that you probably don't care about, but the important part is that they don't say accidentally hitting a blood vessel never happens. They say it is very unlikely. For most common IM vaccines and medicines, accidentally putting it directly into a blood vessel isn't likely to cause a problem. That's not the case for all medicines though. There are drugs that will mess you up if they end up going directly into the bloodstream, and those injections require aspiration.
      Most folks assumes the mRNA vaccines were in the "not a problem" category. The mouse study shows that it is quite possibly in the "really needs to be IM, so check by aspiration" category.
      Most of the criticisms he mentions are valid, but don't really call into question the overall results of the study. Mice aren't humans... The conclusion was just that there is a particular way the mRNA vaccines *could* be particularly bad (which doesn't apply to many other vaccines) if they accidentally get injected into the bloodstream. The idea that the rare occasion a supposedly IM injection accidentally ends up going into a blood vessel *might* be associated with the rare serious side effects which look a lot like what happens if you give mice the vaccine IV (but doesn't happen when you give mice the same dose IM)... It seems pretty *plausible*. Precautionary principle seems to say we should aspiratie when giving these vaccines to humnas. The reason to not aspirate is very weak after all (it takes a second more and might hurt a tiny bit more).
      BTW: There's another study which did pretty much the same experiment with the adenovirus based vaccine... And showed that IV administration causes clotting problems, just like we see as a very rare but bad side effect in people getting the vaccine. That paper has a lot more detailed biochemistry explaining the possible mechanism, so even more plausibly applicable to humans.

      @@travcollier incredibly thoughtful and detailed information. As I navigate this space, not this channel specifically but the topic in general, I only see this kind of practice going one way. Absolutely, as you mention there are atrocious comments albeit I’ve seen more than a fair share in both directions. What I find so disappointing is how quickly every single person is grouped as if they are atrocious on top of being anti science and anti vaccine, regardless of an individuals calls of having taken the vaccine or of recommending others take it or encouraging people speak with their doctor, especially if at high risk. I can’t help but see a pattern where any topic which might even remotely be considered as useful for a bad fair (or atrocious) individual to use in an argument or which has the slightest chance to discourage someone from being vaccinated, there is an all out attack on that topic and anyone who might participate in it. And I will reiterate that those individuals who even participate in said discussion are loudly grouped with people holding some of the most extreme anti views. It’s such a shame not only because it feels terribly wrong and in my opinion is doing long term damage to credibility and crushing the last bits of civility we might have had but the real crime is how there has never been a better time to unite the peoples of a number of countries and it could be passing us by. It’s so ripe for unity and thoughtful progress but we’re just not quite there yet. I have hope though and with thoughtful discord like yours maybe we can get people to take a step back for long enough to see the faces of those we’re all so angry with and with luck we can see ourselves enough to tolerate a little more and add a pinch of patience with a dash of empathy, (maybe a handful) to make something incredible.

      This is a trickier one... I only actually recently discovered jimmy dore because I follow kyle kulinski and heard him talking about some beef he had with TYT.
      Later the video being talked about appeared in my feed because I follow dr. John Campbell (among a few other's I've looked into and don't appear to have any ties to any conspiracy movement, but give long winded, detailed, nuanced explanations of the latest developments).
      Campbell is using the mice study, and the survey to speculate a possible link between rare accidental intravenous injection, and rates of rare side effects. He admits the data isn't very reliable, but it would potentially make sense and is worth studying further.
      He was surprised to learn that the CDC is actually recommending against aspiration, as this contradicts not only what he learned in medical school, but pfizer and Moderna's own instructions.
      He's suggesting, why wouldn't doctors just aspirate anyway since that's always been standard practice, and if its bad if the vaccines get in your bloodstream... then why not be better safe than sorry no matter how rare or how few blood vessels there are there?
      The official advice from the CDC is recommending against the practice because it might be slightly more painful. Furthermore, if people are already scared of needles and this one is painful, it might scare them off in future...
      I asked my doctor about this, she said yes it is standard practice to aspirate. She said a lot of people don't bother when the injection site has very few blood vessels as its rare for it to be an issue and people get comfortable, but they're supposed to do it...
      So while I'm not qualified to say who is correct. The CDC guidance is not universal, many public health bodies around the world reccomend the opposite. It really depends on the country... so I lean towards dr. Campbell's advice

    As a scientist, at first I was really mad and borderline offended you would suggest that the authors "mixed the samples up". I've had reviewers make comments like that in the past and it's usually a super assinine critique, basically along the lines of "I can't see anything wrong with your results, but I can't believe your conclusion, so you must be wrong.". I always say that as a scientist you should spend about 1/5th of your time at the bench labeling things and recording them into your notebook. We put a huge ammount of effort into making sure that mix ups don't happen, and we go to such great efforts to validate and repeat our results that mix ups typically get caught. When we get a weird result the typical response is "Oh really? Let's regenotype or see if we can see the same thing with different animals, reagents, etc.", this is the stage where many unusual findings die.
    But then when you showed the image flip and rotate, I was like "Oh boy, saying they mixed things up is GENEROUS!" That looks like data falsification if I've ever seen it, and anybody who suggests it's an "accident" is being polite. Not only is it the same sample, it's probably the same image, which is harder to mix up. Unless you're a complete lazy slob, whenever you go to publish you usually have several images that demonstrate the result you want to show, and you choose which one is the most clear or most representative. Doing the experiment without taking useable images is a massive waste of time. When things are contentious, it can help to publish all of the raw images in the supplement. Using the same image across multiple figures raises eyebrows even when everything's labeled correctly (because the implication is that you didn't do the experiment enough times to have the all the control images). Labeling the same image differently usually gets a paper rejected. This paper WILL be retracted!

    The mouse study was only 6 mice? Mice are cheap why would you only use 6, is it even possible to get a statistical spread? I mean if just one mouse in the group died of unrelated natural causes by pure coincidence it would produce the results that almost 17% died?

      6 is generally viewed as the smallest sample size you can perform statistics on. So very lazy people or people who aren't overtly interested in achieving accurate results often settle for this number. However depending on your statistical analysis 6 is often times not enough and even if it mathematically is, the doubt left is still high enough to probably not use your results for medical advice.

    • @catcatcatcatcatcatcatcatcatca
      @catcatcatcatcatcatcatcatcatca 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The mice as a resource aren’t that hard to come around, but work needed for carrying out the study gets multiplied by the amount of mice one needs to take care, vaccinate, treat, scan, dissect, photograph and so on. To lesser extent the work of data analysis also gets more complex.
      Basically small studies can hint at the existence of a very notable effect, or rule one out. They at best call for more throughout studies if the results are positive.
      I think large reason why small studies are performed and published so often is that the scientists need to get published to keep their job. Thus it is better to try ten small studies and only invest more resources when one catches attention, rather than risking producing good but uninteresting results each and every time, risking losing grants and resources allocated to one because the produce seems “uninteresting” and not worth the resources.
      What essentially are market dynamics dictate the constant production of weak studies because while they offer no proper knowledge, they produce headlines and interest. Only after that are the proper studies (maybe) done. This tool for more broad results for identifying correlations thus serves a less scientific role of testing the waters of publications and media.

    • @blehblehbleh24
      @blehblehbleh24 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To add on to what the others are saying, usually the most statistically sound method is to pick a sample size relative to the effect size you want to look at. So, if you have a huge difference you're expecting to see between your control and test mice, you can get away with fewer samples. But, if your effect size is small (say, for example, because your mice sometimes have a background effect that looks like the thing you're analyzing), you need way more samples to have confidence in your conclusion. And confidence is the key word: the heart of statistics is determining the confidence you have that two samples are different.
      Unfortunately a lot of wet-lab scientists don't understand statistics particularly well, so sometimes they go with the "cost efficient" option. That is, they use an extremely small amount of replicates, and assume the effect size is very large. From a planning/statistics standpoint, this is putting the cart before the horse. And, as you pointed out, this approach is extremely susceptible to missing things and coming to false conclusions.
      But the studies aren't worthless, even when they're small. They just shouldn't be used to make conclusions, but rather to aid in generating a hypothesis for new experiments.

    • @bettievw
      @bettievw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      For anyone who dislike needles, this was my experience as someone with a diagnosed needle phobia. The less fat you have, the shallower the injection will be. So the needle you see will likely not be going fully into you. Also, if it is going to be fully injected, remember that it's really only the part that goes through the skin and the muscle that hurts, so you shouldn't try to imagine it going in. In my experience, it was a very easy jab. There was no burning, no pain. Basically as if it was just a needle without an injection. Swing your arm around after, I like to imagine that it's like shaking a bowl of flour to fill in the holes, so I'm getting my cells to get back into the hole that the needle made. It makes me feel much better! Also, say that you have fainted in the past so that they take you to a private area. I always cry a lot, before during and after, and I don't want people seeing that. Don't look at the needle, look at the hand on the opposite arm as the one that's being injected. How does it move? What does it look like? Can you see your veins? Can you flex your thumb? Really concentrate hard. It's a good idea to try to relax your arm, but that isn't going to be easy. So instead I just don't think about it. It doesn't matter much if your muscles arent relaxed, it doesn't matter if you're flexing them to hell. It might make it hurt just the tiniest bit more, but it helps to know that there's no pressure on you to pretend you're not scared.
      If you're frightened, I love you, I get it, you can do this. I am so proud that you're willing to do this despite the fear, I believe in you.

      I actually have a severe blood and needle phobia that can cause nausea and fainting, which is strange because I used to get my blood drawn all the time as was required for certain antidepressants. I had to look away when they administered the jabs, but I was surprised that I barely felt a thing. Now, the flulike symptoms I got (this is normal by the way) did shut me down for half a day, but I was completely fine afterwards as if nothing had happened. The flu shot I got last month hurt more, but nothing is anywhere near as bad as getting an IV put in the wrong way, which is probably where my phobia stems from.
      It's recommended you do get the flu vaccine as well, because you don't want your body fighting off that on top of anything else that might happen.

      I wish these conservative & conspiracy nut "comedians" could at least be _funny._ Even a guilty smirk would somehow make it slightly less awful, but I'm a miserable cxxt, so idk. I know honesty is asking far too much of them, cos that would blow their whole scheme, but then again, a proper _joke_ apparently will make them implode. All they do is intentionally ignore & misrepresent the things they punch down about, and say it in an incredulous tone. (Dry wit is far more than that, mind, and funny when done right.)
      No wonder Crowder's "stand-up comic" phase was so short-lived - yet he still calls himself a comedian and does those lame, cringey "skits". He has paid pals to laugh at that crap on his show,, but alone on stage with his "stand up routine", nobody laughed, cos they were waiting for a punchline. He'd have to gesture wildly or make a goofy face, like you do to get a giggle out of children. A scant few drunk people snickering at his incredulously face after the 1000th time they hear & recognise "100 genders" and "attack helicopters" is hardly a feather in your cap...gun. At this point, I'm extremely skeptical of *medical* studies (as opposed to psychological studies or sociological studies) that rely on self-reporting as a major mechanic. The discredited Andrew Wakefield study, that incorrectly linked vaccines and autism, involved self-reporting by parents.
    Self-reporting in a psychological or sociological context can be helpful, and interviewing or surveying someone about their experiences when records or testing can provide proof of things like infection timelines can be valuable, too.
    But (for example) asking people whether they had "more tinnitus" after a vaccine, with no access to any medical records of previous tinnitus or medications people might be taking that can cause tinnitus etc. to corroborate people's responses, seems really unreliable. People are very susceptible to cognitive biases like confirmation bias and selective memory recall.

    • @michaelgoldstein8516
      @michaelgoldstein8516 ปีที่แล้ว

      While self reporting does have significant limitations which are nearly always commented on and taken into consideration when we are appraising a study, the Wakefield study is not a good example of these limitations. The parents of the kids in those studies later found out which patient number their kids were and stated that a lot of their reporting was misrepresented. So the reporting wasn’t unreliable, the data Wakefield used was completely fabricated.

      When asking someone if they have a symptom after a vaccine, can cause some people to have that symptom. They may have had that symptom before the vaccine, but didn't pay much attention to it, but after it was mentioned, it is now apparent to the person. For example: I've had headaches for years, but I never really noticed them because they weren't intense, just always there. One day I heard mention of the type of headaches I get, and dang if I didn't start noticing them. But, if I was asked about headaches after taking the vaccine, I might have attributed the headaches to the vaccine, rather than my whole sinus problems.

      *Nov 3rd daily case*
      3,633 new cases, 12 new deaths, 191 discharged from hospital, 3,149 completed isolation. 31,205 active cases in total

      *Nov 5th daily case*
      1,758 new cases, 9 new deaths, 119 discharged from hospital, 3,538 completed isolation, 27,025 active cases in total.
      Almost all the times, 98% of active cases are asymptomatic or having mild symptom while those who are critically ill and dead are mostly 60 y.o. and above and are mostly unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Additional context for those who don't know, active cases is the real cases of currently infected people (total cumulative cases - total deaths - total recovered = active cases)

      @@GuyWhoLikesTheSnarkies1435 well a couple factors right, vax numbers, natural immunity, etc all contribute to lowering numbers but its far from gone... the concern is further wild mutation, cooling temps in the northern hemisphere drive people indoors and that's where alot of transmission is going to occur, nobody wants some new strain gaining foothold. i suppose if you live in some no population area, you can be more flippant, but higher popuplation centers have to be wary so as not to be completely overwhelmed, likely affecting the availability for normal emergency health concerns. so for those in positions of authority and healthcare, the angle of concern is different than some rando citizen, they're not better, but just have a greater number of people to consider, rather than just say you and your family or me and my family individuallly. its all part of living in a society and at least pretending to care about the future. from my perspective alot of the vax push is just about getting the workers back to the grind and making money for the wealthy, so the concern from 'up top' is hardly genuine human empathy.

    I remember Jimmy Dore from his TYT days, and I had an interaction with him at that time that I'd say was a good red flag for how he approaches information and conflicts. He said something factually incorrect in a TYT video, so I tweeted to him that what he said was incorrect, told him the correct information, and cited a couple of sources. As far as I can remember, I was polite. Jimmy responded by calling me fat and not addressing any of the points I made.
    Edit: to all the people asking for proof, I have unfortunately deleted the Twitter account in question, so my tweets aren't visible anymore, and I can't find an archive link. Jimmy's tweets are visible, but you can see my old handle in them, and I don't want to dox myself. Sorry, you're just going to have to take me at my word.
    To anyone who does manage to find these tweets, a very important thing to note: after I deleted my Twitter account, a different person seems to have registered using my handle. The person currently using that Twitter handle is NOT me.

      @@Junebug89 How is he completely wrong? Please provide some evidence, because from what I see when I look around the world is that places with exceptionally high vaccination rates are having Omnicron outbreaks at close to the same rates as places with much lower vaccination rates.
      There is a good argument for vaccines, and that's to prevent hospitalizations due to the original and the delta variant.
      The problem is that people are so polarized for vaccines or against vaccines there's no nuance or looking at the data.
      This video shows that, because Jimmy's exclusively talking about the vaccine flattening the curve and even wiping it out. Both of which were not valid arguments.
      It's silly to point out that Jimmy is talking about cases only and not deaths when his point is that the vaccine hasn't prevented the spread at all.

    This is just some constructive criticism. While the Israeli study did find that combining vaccine induced immunity with natural immunity decreased odds of reinfection, the authors claim that this finding was not statistically significant:
    “Individuals who were previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 seem to gain additional protection from a subsequent single-dose vaccine regimen. Though this finding corresponds to previous reports, we could not demonstrate significance in our cohort.”

    • @jarletto

      @@Imperial_Squid I accept that "not statistically significant" and "could not demonstrate significance" are different statements, and I should have been clearer in my own critique. However, I don't think this distinction does much to absolve Shaun.
      First, inability to demonstrate significance implies an inconclusive result, not a result that demonstrates the superior efficacy of natural + vaccinated immunity. From my interpretation, Shaun implied the latter rather than the former. Second, the comparison of previously infected individuals to previously infected + vaccinated individuals (Model 3 in the study) involved a sample size n = 14,029 persons which I would argue is sufficient to obtain conclusive levels of statistical significance were a meaningful causal relationship present.

    • @bblvrable
      @bblvrable 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The problem though again comes back to the filtering. Those previously-infected individuals survived, therefore a significant portion of them likely had minimal or no symptoms from the original infection, in which case demonstrating significance of having both natural immunity and a vaccine over just natural immunity would be nearly impossible to do without a colossally huge sample size.
      What the stronger focus should be on is whether there was a significant increase of negative outcomes for people with both natural and vaccine immunity vs. those with only natural immunity. There shouldn't be a focus on "is this worth bothering with?", but "is there a specific reason to avoid it?"

Someone could have mild tinnitus and not have even noticed it until it got temporarily worsened OR they read online about something like the vaccine causing it. If 100% vax and everyone resumes normal life, all new cases will be those of vaxed people. that has no meaning if cases remain low. @@WayneBraack they didn’t, they said “an increase in cases is predictable if you had zero cases during lockdown” meaning, of course there is an increase if there were none and now there are some.
      They’re making the point that you can’t compare it to anything other than previous numbers for itself, which is in itself biased. The first person killed each day is an increase in deaths that day, two people die the next day you can state “100% increase in deaths since yesterday”
      The best thing to do is look at infection to death ratio, I believe is their point. If the ratio goes down, whatever we’re doing is working. If 100% are vaxxed and then 100% become infected, but 0% die, that is a good vax or a nonfatal virus, both of which are good news, but that is a perfect world and we are not in that world so people don’t do what they say and the people telling other people to do things don’t always have the best intentions, which becomes a vicious circle
