  • Once you've written the first draft of your book, it's time to bring in the editing professionals. The first professional you need to hire for your book is a content editor or a developmental editor. Make sure you're hiring the right editors in the right order as many authors spend big bucks on a copy editor before getting a content edit. They are left wondering why their book isn't better after that round of editing. In this video, Julie Broad of Book Launchers explains what a content editor will do, how you can hire a book editor, what you can expect to pay a content editor, and tips to work with them.

Yes. I wish I had thousands to spend on one book, but I just don’t. Hopefully someday 🙏

I am SO glad Julie set me up with a great content editor. He helped me see the book from the reader’s perspective, and helped me think of what the goals of my book are, and how to achieve them. My manuscript began as a collection of independent vignettes, and thanks to the enthusiastic encouragement, I was able to take my writing to the next level. I am so surprised I will have a fully coordinated, extended narrative which gives the reader a great payback. I didn’t have the confidence to do it before meeting with my content editor. Thank you Julie!

Great educational video Julie! My one editor experience ended up with hiring a "best seller" editor who did both developmental and copy editing. It was reasonably priced as she combined price and turnaround was better than expected. I've read many books that clearly lacked one or more of these editor types and it's easy to spot while reading. Authors should never underestimate their value! Thank you!

That's great that you were able to combine it. My first book was a combination as well but it's rare someone is able to do both well.

Hmm. I didn't know a content editor and developmental editor was the same thing.

The words get used interchangeably these days ... although there are slightly differing definitions for them that can be found. The essence of what they do is the same.

You had me up until the point when you got to the cost of edits. Wow! I guess my book won’t have that benefit!

Does it only makes sense to get your draft edited if you are planning to self-publish? If you are hoping to get a publisher should you still get the book edited before trying to get a publisher to accept it?

Great question - and there isn't a single path. MOST publishers will actually prefer to have you go through an agent and have a book proposal. That said, we have had some of our authors get as far as finished manuscript with a cover and full design and then get a publishing deal. We have also had a couple get a deal after they self-published.
All that said - you can try to get a publishing deal - but it often takes so long that you might be better to move your book forward at the same time so you can publish with or without a publisher.
