We volunteered at Thailand's Ethical Elephant Sanctuary (full day experience in Chiang Mai)

Today we are telling the story of elephants that once faced abuse for the entertainment of humans. What were they subjected to? Where did this happen? How are they today? This is what we aim to find out.
This video is by no means a promotion of any specific elephant sanctuary but rather our way of trying to reach out to fellow travelers and spread some awareness in to be choosing the correct ethical elephant experiences when in Asia and Thailand, especially as it is one of the top things to do in Chiang Mai. Spending time with elephants is one of the most popular things to do in Southeast Asia. Elephant rides have been romanticized since time immemorial, quietly ignoring how cruel humans can be to these gentle giants. We hope this video helps you to think twice before choosing which experience you go with.
We chose to spend the day at Ran Tong Elephant Rescue Center in Chiang Mai, a sanctuary for Thailand’s once-abused elephants. We got to spend the day learning about the lives that these elephants once lived and how it is our responsibility as humans to look after these elephants now and give them a better life.
At the Ran Tong elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai we got to make friends with the adult and baby elephants that now call this place home. We learnt about their dietary needs and even made some vitamin balls for them. Elephants need a lot of different natural foods to help ensure they stay healthy and when they are not out in nature they don’t always have access to all these foods. Here at the sanctuary, the volunteers and employees work hard to ensure that all the needs of the elephants are met and we loved getting to contribute by making some vitamin balls and then feeding them to the elephants.
We also got to take the Thailand elephants for a walk to an open field where they got to play and enjoy the many fruit and vegetable snacks we had prepared for them. After that we have them a mud bath as mud is a great natural product to ensure their skin is protected from the sun and insects. Our favorite part of the day had to be giving the elephants a bath after they had spent some time rolling around in the mud.
We can see why spending time with Elephants is one of the top things to do in Chiang Mai, there is no debate regarding this. It is a must do activity in Thailand . However, we just request you to choose an ethical elephant sanctuary that chooses the right practices to look after and care for these beautiful and majestic creatures on Earth.
