Nuff respect to you sir, I met Dudley in 1987, very nice gentleman, I know he is trying he is making a few guesses and I have a copy of Felix Blake's history I see you do too, From the Cat's mouth Mr Winston "spree" Simon allow my to give you a account from him so you can edit the video and make corrections, according to Spree and that info is in the book too he bought a pan from Andrew Beddoe (which was convexed) loaned it to a friend who got so drunk he beat it till it changed shape, to concave like afraid to take it back he decided to try and fix it himself, so he took a stone and started pounding it, frustrated he started to hit the bumps he made with the stone, and discovered it had some nice tones, after a while he was able to play a song on it "mary had a little lamb" he took off and not only showed off with it but shared his discovery with his peers and tuners, soon the more experienced peers started to experiment with the idea, so the pan became concave as we know it now, also when Ellie Mannette came on the scene he developed it further, then Anthony Williams developed the 4ths and 5th's, Ellie's development and style of configuring the notes in an organized fashion gave rise to what we have today, several styles including the double seconds we use today is Ellie's brainchild , thus he was dubbed in the 1960's as the Father of the modern pan, we are losing accuracy and people are using whatever the find as history on the net and distorting the facts kindly note these and please make the adjustments

    Steel pan documentary (2010)
What a distortion of the origins of the Trinidad steel pan. How do non Trinidadian assume the responsibility of talking about the pan and relating and interpreting what they think they know or heard.

Maybe u shoud've travelled to T'dad to get the history and sound direct from Trini, instead of having a story with "This man, pass it to this man, I don't know the name" ??? what kind've source is that.

baby bop Duddley did an ok presentation for what it is, he is a master tuner no historian he just like Birch and Guppy came into a world with pan already at an advanced stage of development, many of the Ebony players are Trinidadians, its leadership are trinis, arrangers are trinis, just sharing info, I was taught history and I am still uncovering facts, rest assured them people you mention are in the same boat as Duddley, master tuners and that's all they are friends of mine and I know , what he needs to do is to interviev the over 75 (closer to 80) people who are still around and get info from them, that is where I got additional info, outside of the history classes I attended

I respect this vid but if you want to make a documentary on the steelpan get some Trini players or use a Trini band. some trini tuners like birch or guppy. no one can play pan like a trini!

I'd also like to know what the song is called at the end. It is familiar but I just can't place it.

The British banned the Tambu Bambu under the pretense that it destroyed the roadways. The African drums had already been banned with the intention of wiping out the African influence. Ellie Mannette was the man who first sunk the concave pan. Spree first tuned the pans. Ellie went on to create other pans, his is quite a story. By the way, these pans sound awful. At least the producers could have found some proper bands to demonstrate the beauty of the instrument. In fact, this video should have been done in a pan factory in Trinidad.

"The steelpan is the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century" ????
    *>> I DO NOT THINK SO !!!!!*
Better check your sources before you claim stuff that is not the truth of the matter. WikiPedia has 5 acoustic instruments that are invented in the 21th century.

@@neilgibbons2532 Some accounts have the steelpan's early development starting the late 1800s. IF that's the case, we could say that it's akin to the drum kit in when it started to develop, with it's modern recognized form having solidified in the 1900s. But if steelpan was created in the 20th century, then it shares that distinction with (at least) the melodica--also an acoustic instrument widely used, and recognized as being invented in the 1950s.
