I read this trilogy years ago (when I was in high school) and have re-read this series SO MANY TIMES! My number ONE favorite series EVER! I recommend it to any one and everyone.
"The author captures the youth of the character very well" YES tht is one of the reason i love this book. Todd acts just like a kid would, he throw tantrums and get insecure like a kid would which just add up to his character development even more ahh i cant wait for u to continue the next book, get your heart ready tho...
I'm so happy to see a big booktuber reading this... I hardly even read YA any more, but The Chaos Walking Trilogy is still probably my favourite series of all time. Patrick Ness is SUCH an amazing author and I just can't express how much I love these books. They have huge sentimental value to me. I can also tell you that all three books made me cry. It takes a lot for a book to make me cry and Patrick Ness pulled it off three times in a row...
Mayor Prentiss is simply one of my FAVORITE villains omg. As the books progress be just becomes so interesting. I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE YOU READ THE ASK AND THE ANSWER.
I just finished the last book and i am so emotionally attached to them that I genuinely do not know what to do anymore. I FELT the last few pages of the last book in my gut, like they might as well be engraved into my skin. I can't stop crying, like at all. The characters, the plot, EVERYTHING. I refuse to put the book back on the shelf because now its part of me, and it'll stay on my bedside table so that I can sniff the pages whenever i need. period.
You kind of briefly mentioned it, but I really love when, in intense moments, there is just long run on sentences that go “this happened and this happened and this happened and I was feeling this way” and it just gets more and more intense as it goes
Read this trilogy years ago. One of if not my favorite trilogies of all time and that heartbreaking scene you mentioned is the only time I’ve ever cried while reading a book.
I read this book in 2018 to prepare for the movie (lol) and overall really enjoyed it. One of my favourite things about it was how Patrick Ness chose to tackle toxic masculinity throughout the story and the series. I do still have to finish the last book but I was just so impressed, especially because they were published 10+ years ago during the mega dystopian phase.
That part of the book that almost made you cry, destroyed me. This was a reread and I still had to shut the audiobook off for a while. Will you do a spoiler review?
Whatho. I must say that you have a charmingly easy way of delivering. The book sounds rather brisk and it is a jolly nice thing to know that the villain is really a villain and not a charming rogue. As for the element of manhood and personal responsibility, this used to be a well explored topic ( Great Expectations for example) but I have noticed a trend away from this of late. One almost gets the opinion that many a protagonist has had the gumption to take on the world from shortly after 6 years of age. Lovely review. Toodle pip.
I'm so happy you liked this book!! Thinking about this book just makes me emotional. This is one of the only times that I really loved first person pov, I think Ness did an amazing job with so many aspects but especially the pov. There's so much to discuss with this book and series, but I think the thing I love most about it is the character work, I think Todd in particular is so realistic, he's a teenager who's had his life flipped upside down and he really struggles and has to adjust his entire understanding of the world. Omg I know the part you're talking about, it's one of the only times I truly sobbed while reading a book 😭 aaaah there's just so much I want to discuss about this book, I just want to gush with you about it. I love it so much I even have a quote from it tattooed on my body in Patrick Ness' handwriting 😂
I'm so glad you liked it. This is the book that got me into reading and it was so relatable, especialy since my first language isn't english and it was the first book that I read in a different language.
Ohh I have been in the mood for a super fast paced book recently. This one sounds SO original and fun!! Every time I try to pare down my TBR another book pops up that I obviously have to add 🤦🏻♀️
i had this book for a while now but i only read the first page before putting it down because i just didn't like the misspellings and 1st person narrative at all, but now you gave me a new perspective and i'm actually excited to give this book another go so thank you!
I picked up this book in a second hand bookstore back in 2012. I guess the title got me interested, and when I read the first few sentences, I got intrigued and bought the book. My love for that book was, and is, so so so big! I devoured all 3 books in just days and my love for Patrick Ness was there. I loved everything about this book. It was funny at times as well, just because every being was sending out thoughts, even the animals, which made it hilarious too from time to time. [spoiler] When Manchee died...it wrecked me. I cried and cried and cried and for a while I couldn’t believe it and hoped that somehow it wasn’t real. I couldn’t even read for a while, because it was heartbreaking. I still remember every detail of that scene, how it was written and I still feel all the emotions thinking about it. Happy to read that someone else loves this book so much as well! Thanks for this wonderful, spoiler free review!
This is one of my favorite books of all time, I'm so glad you liked it! The sequels are amazing as well and you get to know the villains' motivation more there.
Hi, I just found your channel as I was browsing Stormlight commentary. Very upset it took me so long to find this! I feel like I have so many videos of yours to watch now to see what you thought of a lot of my past reads. I just downloaded this book on Audible based on your review here as this sounds like a very unique read. I’ll let you all know what I think when finished!
Your recs have been on fire for me lately! I just read Fireborne a little while ago and absolutely loved it. I also just finished the Ninth Rain and HOLY COW! It's definitely my favorite book I've read this year. So of course I now need to check this one out asap!
i red this whole trilogy at school using their library, and i’m going crazy not being able to get them anywhere and all the bookstores being closed. I JUST WANT TO RE READ TYEM I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THEM
soon to be a movie or a show! im really into, the hunger games and the maze runner books, i like thoughs type of books, im not sure to get this book but im gonna have a go at the walking dead book
OH MY GOLLY GOSH! I AM HALF WAY THROUGH MORE THAN THIS by Patrick Ness and its fantastic so i can’t wait to eead this trilogy. I am getting the boxed set.
So glad you liked it! This triloy is my 3rd/4th face trilogies of all time and it's sooo underrated! Waiting to see what you would think about the second book because it's my favorite in the trilogy
I think you’re the first person I’ve seen who has actually said what the setup for this book is, and now I’m actually interested because it sounds like exactly the sort of weird I’d be into. 😁
I've been obsessed with these books since i was 11 - i've lost count of the amount of times i've read them. Also the Mayor is the best villian of all time - its a shame you dont meet him in the first book but after that he's amazing. Its annoying about the film, with all the reshoots and delays that people are already judging it before its come out - plus its barely being marketed, tom holland hasnt mentioned it once. And its so annoying because we had one chance to get these books adapted and its looking bad before its being released. Ask and the answer, and monsters and men are my favourite ones and the fact that if this film doesnt do well i will NEVER see them adapted is heartbraking. Hope the same thing happens like with the golden compass and percy jackson that it might get a series adaptation.
For a second there, I thought you were being sarcastic with the title of the video because although I thoroughly enjoyed it, I felt like the pacing was more on the slower side especially with the 2nd one. I love it here though, you've convinced me to read most of the books I've read this year!
Yay! I'm so excited you liked this! Manchee is my favourite character. Ever. Of all time. Period. Terrified to see what they do with the adaptation. Eek! I read Burn from Ness this year. It's totally different to Chaos Walking but holy heck that was good too.
I really want to pick this up. I honestly had never heard of it until the Trailer released and then Jessie and Jade were all excited so I feel the need to read it now before the movie comes out.
I was deployed when I tried reading this book, so I was in a more vulnerable headspace, and I had to bow out when The One Part happened because it was VERY triggering to me and I don't think I'll ever go back despite all the great reviews. 😩
I needed a shorter, fast paced book after reading RoW so I picked up this one based off your review and HOLY COW, I have allllll the feels. Burned through this puppy in two days and I've already ordered the other two in the trilogy. That cliffhanger made me want to jump into book two right away.
@@ebnovels I'm starting The Ruin of Kings tonight so I can keep up with the buddy reads, but I'll be returning to this trilogy as soon as I have time for them.
I had heard a little bit about this and was kind of interested, but after this review I apparently had no idea what this book actually was and now I'm very interested to read it.
I think I know what scene you're talking about that you didn't want to happen. I bawled so hard!😭😭 But oh man I love this book so much!! I reread recently after watching the movie trailer and loved it just as much as the first time!❤️❤️ I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!
Also, oh god why did I not turn this into one comment rather than three lol, but books 2 and 3 are definitely worth reading. Just be warned...not that Knife is a comedy, but the sequels get much, *much* darker
I agree about the one action that the character did out of rage. I didn't understand it or most of the other characters' reactions to it. It becomes more clear in the 2nd and the 3rd book, but it definitely could have done differently and better in the first one.
I can't believe I got this book spoiled by fan fiction 😫 multiple times!! But its still love it more than any book I've ever read. It's truly amazing, and if you get it spoiled too don't worry I bet you're still going to enjoy it 😉
I'm currently on the third book of this series with the audiobooks and they are so good. The way they use the noise is so fun and really sucks you into the story.
Excellent review, many thanks. Which audiobook were you listening to? There appears to be an original (Nick Podehl) and an anniversary edition (Humphrey Bower). I'm too poor to grab them both, lol!
Have read it now (just stuck to the print version). Your excellent review made for an excellent recommendation in the end-so Thanks Again! somewhat spoiler-ish maybe … --- I actually enjoyed the "out of character" scene that you mentioned. Well … enjoyed is probably the wrong word. Let's go with "appreciated its inclusion." In any case, I thought that it added something worthwhile to the story. Maybe (hopefully) I'm in the minority here, but as a person with a temper who isn't always proud of how I handle it; I could really relate to the way Ness described that horrible moment when you give free rain to your anger and the flood of nuance-free, uni-directional thoughts that follows. That he captured the rare, but absolutely real way in which that small act of letting go, of just letting yourself feel freely for a moment can take you to terrible places. The sickening speed with which an unmitigated torrent of vexation and grievance can sweep you away to words (& sometimes actions) that you immediately regret. Obviously we don't all get carried off to the point of perpetrating irredeemable violence. I, for one, tend more towards the regrettable destruction of household goods … but then that's maybe something of a lesson about the dangers of "othering" and how it breaks down those essential barriers that people otherwise wouldn't cross. A thoughtful (even if hungry) Todd wouldn't kill a turtle (though that was after, of course). An angry Todd still wouldn't kill a person … but raging and fueled by the xenophobic rhetoric of his society? Maybe not so out of character after all … at least in my opinion. Other folk's mileage may vary, of course!
To me The Ask and the Answer is the first book that made me flat out cry and I couldn't explain why with words. It just touched my heart in a way that wasn't even sad, I just cried, and my sister was making fun of me. Am I seriously the only one ?
I have this book since 2016 and never picked it up. I tried once but didnt get far. I will try the audiobook since you say it's good. Maybe I could finally finish it now =)
I bet I'm going to have to edit this when Elliot mentions this later in the video XD I picked this up originally because I was doing a Children's Writing unit at university, it was what got me hooked on Patrick Ness (I've since gone back and read all but one of his books...which I'll get to later lol). But for His Dark Materials this would probably be my favourite modern trilogy, they're both beaten by LOTR if I go favourite ever though (no offence to Mr Ness or Mr Pullman lol). I'm curious if Elliot has seen the movie trailer though. Considering its messy development it, to me anyway, looks SO much better than it has any right to be. Edit: I knew I'd wind up having to edit this comment, I typed this too soon lol Also Burn (PN's latest) got delivered to my house yesterday, really looking forward to it. I've somehow ended up reading three fantasy books at once, not that I'm complaining :-P
I finished this book in one day and then spent 5 minutes staring at a wall trying to process it. And now the next two books are checked out of the library and I don't know what to do with myself
I think January (don't quote me on that, especially in the mess that is 2020/21 in the movie industry). It looks much better than I expected, even when the cast at least gave me hope
@@thomasray I hope not. I hate when that happens. Especially when they change too much from the book. As much as possible, Leave it the way it is; that’s why people like it.
I think the movie was filmed back in 2017 and was originally deemed "unreleasable." They did some reshoots and now here we are. My hopes ain't high to say the least. But this book is absolutely fantastic!
Noooo why did you make me interested in this book now I have to add one more to my tbr.. Btw I can't remember if you said it somewhere or if I'm remembering wrong, but are you going to start the Winternight trilogy next year? I want to start that this month or in January, if you're reading at the same time I'd love to see your reviews. I've never buddy read ever so I'm gonna stick to watching reviews haha..
Please review these two fantastic books, "Just Eat the Worm" and "Higher is calling" by Maxwell Adekoje. Thanks! Incredible read 📖 with massive nuggets for 2021. ❣
SPOILERS I first read this in early 2015 and I remember the literal anguish of when the book ends and yiu think Todd and Viola have made it to Haven and he’s carrying her bleeding body and then the town is empty and it’s just Mayor Premtiss waiting for him 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Also I have been waiting for the movie since 2015 bc it was announced sooooo long ago and so hype to finally see it.
Just finished this book a week again. And.... Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler SPOILER!!! The animal death scene KILLED me! And the killing that Todd does was 100% unnecessary and completely out of nowhere since he had been and continued to hesitate about killing anything in the book.
I literally only read this as The Knife of Never letting go, I did not realize the movie was the Tom Holland Daisy Ridley film >_< I just accidentally watched the trailer lol. Looks kinda good actually, but apparently there was alot of issues with it
OMG I'm so happy you liked this book. I also loved it!! (Spoiler) When Manchee died, I died with him and I actually had to put the book down for a while because I didn't want to keep reading it, it was too heartbreaking for me. But I couldn't not finish it LOL I can't wait to hear your opinion on the sequels and to chat about them!
Unpopular opinion: I hated this series. I had to read it in class and chose the boom myself. The book club and I loved it at first like whats not to love about a guy just talking about how he can hear his dogs? But there are many issues in the book like how can the animals reproduce if all females were wiped away? Also just ruining the character of viola who was shy and not talkative to just at one random moment just wouldnt shut up. I didnt read monter of men because the second book was so terrible and I had a friend read it and he said it was such a pain because the ending was lackluster and it was just… bad. Sorry if you liked these books but it wasnt for me. Just my personal review on it 4/10 because it had a good concept and the beginning was dope tbh. Spoiler ahead I FORGOT the totally unessecary death of the dog wich was, at that point, to me the only reason I eead the boom because his little one liners were so funny and cute.
I joked to someone that I have a moment in something I'm writing...not exactly like *that* moment I think Elliot is referring to, but one which might make people hate me for about as much lol
@@bookaholicgameaholicvlogah4191 I'm probably explaining it badly, I just don't want to give a big plot point away (because it turns out to have pretty lasting effects which if I get it right people won't expect)
Ben and cillan are gay dads Patrick said it in a interview they are dads but it’s something that Todd just doesn’t care about it that’s it’s not brought up only really hinted at.
They can all hear each others thoughts, yet they can ALL withhold info regarding the death of the women. All very clever, except how they can all control that.
“How do I even read other books now?” Is probably the highest compliment possible for a book

That One Part in Particular is the only scene in all the books I've ever read to make me flat out sob.
Bro same
SAME. I cry in novels but my god that scene i thought Patrick wouldn’t do it and man
You can criticize the books for quite a few things but one thing this book cannot be called is "safe". Patrick Ness WILL go there

To me The Ask and the Answer is the first book that made me flat out cry and I couldn't explain why with words. It just touched my heart in a way that wasn't even sad, I just cried, and my sister was making fun of me.
Am I seriously the only one ?
Nice, this one is on my tbr, perhaps reading it in Janary
I have this book since 2016 and never picked it up. I tried once but didnt get far. I will try the audiobook since you say it's good. Maybe I could finally finish it now =)
Anyone who read the book knows that at 9:20 she was talking about Manchee...
This book was genius! Everything you said! 😎
I bet I'm going to have to edit this when Elliot mentions this later in the video XD
I picked this up originally because I was doing a Children's Writing unit at university, it was what got me hooked on Patrick Ness (I've since gone back and read all but one of his books...which I'll get to later lol).
Edit: I knew I'd wind up having to edit this comment, I typed this too soon lol
Also Burn (PN's latest) got delivered to my house yesterday, really looking forward to it. I've somehow ended up reading three fantasy books at once, not that I'm complaining :-P
I finished this series last month and the last book is INTENSE. I can't wait to see what you think of book 2 and 3.
I love u ma'am...love from india...i have read your nonfiction suggested books...i found them awesome....thanks for u
I wasn't planning to read this but now I want to binge read the series lol
I like the way u review books!! 😊🎄❄️☃️
I finished this book in one day and then spent 5 minutes staring at a wall trying to process it.
And now the next two books are checked out of the library and I don't know what to do with myself
the movie will be release next year if am not mistaken
I think January (don't quote me on that, especially in the mess that is 2020/21 in the movie industry). It looks much better than I expected, even when the cast at least gave me hope
Now I have to read this... like, right now.
Patrick gets years later "hate" for the bad scene you talked about...
the Major is a absolutely glorious vilain!!!!
This will be hard for me to visualize if I read it. I’ll be watching the movie because, the noise can appearing not just heard, but seen.
What a coincidence! I started this yesterday
I’ve never read Patrick Ness, but this series is on my 2021 TBR. The movie looks good too, so I want to read the book first 😊
@@thomasray I hope not. I hate when that happens. Especially when they change too much from the book. As much as possible, Leave it the way it is; that’s why people like it.
@@thomasray I don't think it will be so bad, but the characters do look too mature in the trailer
@@thomasray We need to stay positive
@@thomasray I agree
Omgg Im so excited for this book
best book series I have ever read
SPOILERS
I first read this in early 2015 and I remember the literal anguish of when the book ends and yiu think Todd and Viola have made it to Haven and he’s carrying her bleeding body and then the town is empty and it’s just Mayor Premtiss waiting for him 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Also I have been waiting for the movie since 2015 bc it was announced sooooo long ago and so hype to finally see it.
Me too! And the cast looks great but I'm still scared the movie is gonna mess up the story! But I'll probably still go and see it haha
i think im going to give it a try!
my favourite book ever
Just finished this book a week again. And....
Spoiler
Spoiler
Spoiler
SPOILER!!!
Looks kinda good actually, but apparently there was alot of issues with it
Ordering it now
Love this book.
OMG I'm so happy you liked this book. I also loved it!!
(Spoiler)
When Manchee died, I died with him and I actually had to put the book down for a while because I didn't want to keep reading it, it was too heartbreaking for me. But I couldn't not finish it LOL
I can't wait to hear your opinion on the sequels and to chat about them!
I think a piece of my daughter and I also died during that part. We still refer to it as the most painful character death we’ve ever experienced lol
Yes! I had to put the book down for both scenes I think she was talking about! I’m not a dog lover, but man - that was sad! 😰
Cool review ^^
Welp, another one for the TBR lol
Spoiler ahead
I FORGOT the totally unessecary death of the dog wich was, at that point, to me the only reason I eead the boom because his little one liners were so funny and cute.
i'm being forced to read this during summer😍
That's super high praise. I can't decide if this book would be for me. Thoughts?
What do you mean, thoughts? No one knows you, make the decision for yourself.
@@carterborchardburnsbeauty I never considered that! Thanks!
This conversation is hilarious 😂
Allen I think you would enjoy it!!!
@@JessieMaeBooks thank you, random stranger, for taking a chance on giving me a recommendation!
I joked to someone that I have a moment in something I'm writing...not exactly like *that* moment I think Elliot is referring to, but one which might make people hate me for about as much lol
You can’t write for shock that’s what doesn’t work it has to be smooth not just for the shocker and from what your saying is for the shock factor
Please finish the series I was shocked by the ending of monsters of men 🤭
Oo, I’m reading that right now. I’m nervous about how it will end, lol!
Earlyy... Love from 🇮🇳...
This is suvh an awesome book.
They can all hear each others thoughts, yet they can ALL withhold info regarding the death of the women. All very clever, except how they can all control that.
I hope the dog doesn’t die.
don’t worry, you can get attached to him, he stays alive :)
