I know I'm not the only guitarist that's going "hell yeah!". Two absolute masters. I only recently discovered Josh Smith and this is the first time I've heard Matt Schofield. My lucky day, stumbling onto this!
JOSH has the most expressive dynamic feel i think i have ever heard. He knows when to be subtle & stings it at the perfect time. Beautiful melodic lines to. Love what Matt's been doing for the last couple decades now. He was one of the first young guns I found when i first figured out the youtube thing.
Greatest strat-/tele sound comparison I've heard. 👍 Here's a whole library of great phrases and licks to be inspired of. I hear as much R. Ford as I here BB King. Awesom rythm section !!
Been on a Matt Schofield binge. Now I'm going on a Josh Smith binge. Thanks for this great vid Two Rock! It's an dream of mine to own a Two Rock someday!
Matts playing has a relaxed sauntering sound that just flows so naturally. He kinda hangs back and is never rushed. He allows time for a note or phrase to get where it wants to go
its fabulous.....both players.... ive met Matt (great uk player...world class)at a Robben gig...never heard Josh play before..(superb..world class again...i need to check him out more)...but wow you guys have that jazz/blues thing really nailed...most of all expressive...meaningful notes ...its not just blowing. The amps sound great of course......and hats off to the rhythm section...pocket groove.
I just saw Matt and his band in Phoenix. Excellent show. This new crop of blues guitarists are keeping the tradition alive. And...... doing so with respect for the players that came before. Now I have to get to see Josh Smith.
Keep coming back to this. The lead work speaks for itself obviously but I absolutely love the comping work from both of them and it's so easy to hear in the mix! Going to be studying for a while!
This could be a concert series, tour and a double album. Riding the tone-surf, gotta love these two guys. Shaking my head, grinning ending off 2023 and wondering how I can get a Two-Rock TS1 to Cape Town without selling my car.
Josh has had so many guitars over the years. Hundreds. But he's played this black Chapin Tele exclusivity for about 5-6 yrs now. Must be a KILLER instrument.
Bravi entrambi, classe e fraseggio di altissimo livello. Il modo di accompagnare di Josh è assai interessante, ho ascoltato solo una volta il brano, ma è la cosa che mi ha incuriosito di più per la sua originalità!
I am not certain who the bassist is but I assure you the drummer is the long time Robert Cray band southpaw drummer named KEVIN HAYES who played on a couple of Matt Schofield's studio albums. J.C.E.
@@steveburchfield5576 well i don't think you can say whos gonna be the next who ever. There all adding to the mix. If someone tried too hard to be Charlie or Wes the blues police would slate them.
Yeah man there are some great guitarists around now I personally love Eric gales, Joe bonamassa, Josh Smith, Kurt Fletcher, Sam Coulson and Mr zack Wylde.
That is so weird! I was just thinking how much they remind of Ford, but Smith more so. And not in a "copying" way, but more in a "wow" way. Both of them killed it. I am so mad at myself for not learning theory when I was younger. So nice to listen to something other than god damn pentatonic noodling.
Both are fantastic players loved the call and return they really know how to bring each others playing to the top. Also can we have a moment to appreciate josh smiths clamp hands. How the heck can he bend 13s like they're spaghetti.
That run Josh plays from 5:08-5:24 is what separates good guitar players from astounding players. Unbelievable phrasing and outside playing over a standard blues vamp.
DeWayne Pate amazing bass player, he has a VHS tape for developing great tapping technique, so glad that he is still playing bass, hope to more of DeWayne Pate
This is the one that has caught my attention the most. Still though, how different, aside from reverb, is this going to be from my Studio 50/15? That thing has tone for days ...
I found the progression A#9 voicing- D#9 (two voicings he use) and F9 (correct me if I am wrong ;) ), Josh just do some cool rythm stuff that is hard to figure out for me)
Starting about 4:25 Josh plays several very jazzy turnarounds. I so love these lines and need to understand exactly how he is generating them. Is it triad based using some overarching chord substitution s? Or what? I’m dying to get there from here. Can anyone out there help me?
Try thinking of it as "leading" the changes instead of following them. It's not that he's playing licks that relate to the chord they are over, they relate to the chord he's going to. For example, when going to the IV7 on the 4th measure, lead into it over the 3rd measure with a iimin7-bII7-I7/IV7 (approach with the tri-tone sub of IV7). Translation: If the key of the song is G and the IV7 chord is C7, on the 3rd measure play two beats of a d minor7 arpeggio, then two beats of a Db7 arpeggio, then a C7 arpeggio ... it's not about playing something fancy over the C7 (you could also play a G min. pent. lick over the IV); it's about approaching it with chromatic voice leading. Or at the end turnaround over the last V7, you can play your standard iimin7 diatonic substitution over V7 (Amin7 over D7), but to actually make it sound cool, you need to approach the last beat before the Amin7 over the D7, play an Ab diminished 7, then the A min7 over the V (in its regular place), then just before you go back to the G7 at the top, play an Ab7 arp. Basically, try approaching everything with a diminished 7th sound built on the leading tone a half step below, or approach with a Dominant 7th sound built off the b2nd a half step above the root of the next chord that you are going to (on the beat ahead). To pull this off you have to hear where the chord progression is going (or count it), so that you are leading into the change ahead of time instead of reacting to the change of tonality after the fact. I hope this helps, have fun!
If you really want to do a deep dive on this kind of stuff, and believe me, it's WORTH it! Start learning and working on "Rhythm Changes" AKA the "I-VI-II-V-I" and all the different variations you can find. There's alot of that kind of stuff in this tune. Especially in the turnarounds. The tune is in Bb, try playing the I-VI-II-V-I through the last 2 bars and you'll see what I mean. @@davidmoore7088
I hated Jazz when I was younger because it sounded like chaos and now I feel differently from my original feelings. I am so happy to see why I was wrong. I also felt the same about bluegrass and also learned the same as I learned about jazz. It all is good if you understand it :)
Can we all just take a moment to talk about how tasteful Josh's rhythm playing is?
The only problem is when he stops playing rhythm and starts to solo the song just loses all the groove immediately
Hahaha that one of the first things that hit me about this lol. So cool
He stays in the pocket without getting in the way of whoever's soloing, and keeps it colorful without (mis)leading the melody.
Aces.
Josh is good, but Eric Gales annihilates him in this video....
